Not only medical or architecture and engineering industries use 3D printing technology or additive manufacturing in their work, the fashion industry does too.
Europe is embracing 3D printing technology and driving an industrial renaissance through investments in additive manufacturing. Key countries leading in 3D printing include Germany, the United Kingdom, and Sweden. The European Commission has backed over 20 projects from 2014-2016 providing €95 million in funding to support 3D printing research. Several European nations are also investing heavily in 3D printing through initiatives in industries like aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and more to bring manufacturing back to the continent and perfect additive technology.
3D printing is increasingly being used to produce cars and car parts. The Strati, produced in 2014, was the world's first electric car to make extensive use of 3D printing in its production. Other cars that have had 3D printed parts include the Lotus 340R and Daihatsu Copen. The Blade supercar has 3D printed nodes connecting its carbon fiber tubing. Additional 3D printed cars are the EDAG Light Cocoon, Local Motors LM3D, and others. Companies are relying on 3D printing not just for prototyping but also to reduce costs and make lighter cars. Well known car prototypes produced using 3D printing include the Urbee, Elvis' BMW 507,

The United States military has widely adopted 3D printing technology for defense purposes. They have established 3D printing facilities called Fablabs, especially in remote areas like Afghanistan, to print parts for vehicles. The military uses 3D printing to create prototypes for various vehicles, weapons, guns, missiles, and drones. Different branches of the US military have incorporated 3D printing for aircraft repairs, mission-specific drone development, and construction of expeditionary structures. Overall, 3D printing is enhancing military defenses for the US and other countries around the world.
3D bioprinting uses layer-by-layer deposition of bioinks, which are cells or tissues engineered to be part of an organ or other tissue, to fabricate structures that mimic natural tissue characteristics. Bioinks can be deposited to create tissue-like structures for use in medical and tissue engineering applications. These applications include joint replacements, bone plates, intraocular lenses, bone cement, artificial ligaments and tendons, dental implants, blood vessel prostheses, heart valves, skin repair devices, cochlear replacements, contact lenses, breast implants, drug delivery mechanisms, vascular grafts, stents, nerve conduits, surgical sutures and staples, pins and screws for fracture stabilization, and surgical mesh.
Stereolithography, also known as SLA or SL, is an early type of 3D printing technology that solidifies liquid resin into layers using an ultra-violet laser to photocure photopolymer resin according to a pre-programmed design, allowing for the creation of 3D objects in a layer-by-layer process similar to FDM. SLA can be used to produce medical models, prototypes, patterns, production parts, and jewelry.
Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is an additive manufacturing technique that uses thermoplastics to build 3D objects layer by layer through a nozzle. The thermoplastic filament is heated and deposited on the build platform to form the desired shapes. Common thermoplastics used in FDM include acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), nylon, and polyphenylsulfone (PPSF). FDM can be used for modeling, prototyping, and final production parts in industries like aerospace, automotive, medical, and consumer products.
Rapid prototyping was first patented in Japan in the 1980s. Charles Hull then patented Stereolithography in 1986 and founded 3D Systems Corporation, releasing the first Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA-1) machine. In the 1980s and 1990s, other technologies like selective laser sintering (SLS) and fused deposition modeling (FDM) were developed. Early commercial 3D printers allowed for new applications in manufacturing, engineering, and medicine. By the 2010s, 3D printing had grown significantly in popularity due to lower printer costs and an expiration of early patents, with new applications in prosthetics, food printing, and aerospace.

Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
