3. • Fig GI 39-1 Normal variant. Although the
retrorectal space measured 2 cm, the patient
had no abnormality by clinical history, digital
rectal examination, or proctoscopy.

4. • Fig GI 39-2 Lymphogranuloma venereum.
Characteristic smooth narrowing of the
rectum with widening of the retrorectal space.

5. • Fig GI 39-3 Lymphoma. Marked widening of
the retrorectal space with narrowing of a long
segment of the rectosigmoid.

6. • Fig GI 39-4 Sigmoid resection for carcinoma. Widening
of the retrorectal space is due to operative trauma
altering the normal anatomic relations in the pelvis.
