Welcome

Senior High
School!
What is Senior
High School?
What is Senior High School?
 Senior High School (SHS) refers to the last two years of the
K to 12 Program, namely Grades 11 and 12.
 K to 12 is Your Key... To the World Just like learners your age
all over the world, you too will benefit from an education
system suited for the 21st century.
 To Your Dreams The things you will study in SHS are based
on your interests. SHS will be your stepping stone to be
what you want to be after high school.
 To a Better Life SHS equips you with the knowledge and
skills to pursue a better life and help your family and
community.
 K to 12 and SHS were designed with your best interest in mind.
 They are products of years of research, planning, and
consultation that take into account the child, community,
content, competencies, culture, career, and choice.
 You, the learners, are at the heart of the SHS curriculum.
 It recognizes your characteristics, addresses your needs, and
values your personal choices.
 An enhanced curriculum was created to give you the best
possible tools and career choices after high school.
 You may not have realized it but your existing lessons in recent
years have been modified to get you ready for SHS.
 Your teachers have been trained and prepared for K to 12.
 You will be part of the K to 12 generation and your teachers,
schools, and education system are ready for this.
To further explain: Under Republic Act
No. 10533 (Enhanced Basic Education
Act)
You will have to complete Kindergarten,
Grades 1 to 6 (elementary), Grades 7 to
10 (junior high school) and Grades 11 to
12 (senior high school)—in all 13 years—
before you can receive a high school
diploma.
Is Senior High School
Compulsory?
Students cannot be forced to spend two more years in
school, but if they stop at Grade 10, they will only receive
a JHS certificate, not a high school diploma.
Students who belong to the K-12 generation but do not
complete Grade 12 will be disadvantaged in that they will
not be accepted into a college degree or technical-
vocational certificate program without a SHS diploma.
They will also miss out on an opportunity to learn skills
that can qualify them for employment right after SHS, or
prepare them for starting up a business.
What is the SHS voucher?
 The SHS voucher represents funds that will cover the tuition, or a part of it,
when public school students enroll in non-DepEd SHS. Expenses such as
daily allowance and transportation cost are not part of the deal.
 The voucher is not a physical piece of paper that can be transacted like
cash, but its monetary value may be enough to cover the full cost of SHS
tuition and miscellaneous fees at a private institution, depending on its
location. It will be released directly to the non-DepEd schools where Grade
11 voucher recipients choose to enroll.
 Public school Grade 10 completers and all private school Grade 10
completers who are Education Service Contracting (ESC) grantees need
not apply as they are automatically qualified to receive the vouchers.
For how long can a student avail of the
SHS voucher?
The voucher is good for use only in the school year
immediately following Grade 10.
Students can avail of the voucher for two successive
school years only. So if a student fails Grade 11, the
voucher program will not cover the Grade 12 tuition
anymore.
But students can always enroll at a public SHS for
free or at a private or non-DepEd schools at their
own expense.
Each Senior High
School Track
Explained
Under the Enhanced Basic Education Act of
2013, senior high school (SHS) students must
pick among four tracks.
Upon enrollment in SHS, they must choose
from the following tracks:
1. Academic Track
2. Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL)
3. Sports Track
4. Arts and Design Track
Academic Track
General Academic Strand (GAS)
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMMS)
Accountancy, Business and Management
(ABM)
Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM)
General Academic Strand
General Academic Strand
While the other strands are career-specific, the
General Academic Strand is great for students who
are still undecided on which track to take.
A student who finished on this strand can proceed to
any college program. However he/she has to take
some subjects not taken in Senior High but required
by a particular college as a bridging program
to assess his/her preparedness in the field of study
chosen.
You can choose electives from the different academic
strands under this track.
What are the subjects in this strand?
 Humanities

  • 3. What is Senior High School?  Senior High School (SHS) refers to the last two years of the K to 12 Program, namely Grades 11 and 12.  K to 12 is Your Key... To the World Just like learners your age all over the world, you too will benefit from an education system suited for the 21st century.  To Your Dreams The things you will study in SHS are based on your interests. SHS will be your stepping stone to be what you want to be after high school.  To a Better Life SHS equips you with the knowledge and skills to pursue a better life and help your family and community.
  • 4.  K to 12 and SHS were designed with your best interest in mind.  They are products of years of research, planning, and consultation that take into account the child, community, content, competencies, culture, career, and choice.  You, the learners, are at the heart of the SHS curriculum.  It recognizes your characteristics, addresses your needs, and values your personal choices.  An enhanced curriculum was created to give you the best possible tools and career choices after high school.  You may not have realized it but your existing lessons in recent years have been modified to get you ready for SHS.  Your teachers have been trained and prepared for K to 12.  You will be part of the K to 12 generation and your teachers, schools, and education system are ready for this.
  • 5. To further explain: Under Republic Act No. 10533 (Enhanced Basic Education Act) You will have to complete Kindergarten, Grades 1 to 6 (elementary), Grades 7 to 10 (junior high school) and Grades 11 to 12 (senior high school)—in all 13 years— before you can receive a high school diploma.
  • 6. Is Senior High School Compulsory? Students cannot be forced to spend two more years in school, but if they stop at Grade 10, they will only receive a JHS certificate, not a high school diploma. Students who belong to the K-12 generation but do not complete Grade 12 will be disadvantaged in that they will not be accepted into a college degree or technical- vocational certificate program without a SHS diploma. They will also miss out on an opportunity to learn skills that can qualify them for employment right after SHS, or prepare them for starting up a business.
  • 7. What is the SHS voucher?  The SHS voucher represents funds that will cover the tuition, or a part of it, when public school students enroll in non-DepEd SHS. Expenses such as daily allowance and transportation cost are not part of the deal.  The voucher is not a physical piece of paper that can be transacted like cash, but its monetary value may be enough to cover the full cost of SHS tuition and miscellaneous fees at a private institution, depending on its location. It will be released directly to the non-DepEd schools where Grade 11 voucher recipients choose to enroll.  Public school Grade 10 completers and all private school Grade 10 completers who are Education Service Contracting (ESC) grantees need not apply as they are automatically qualified to receive the vouchers.
  • 8. For how long can a student avail of the SHS voucher? The voucher is good for use only in the school year immediately following Grade 10. Students can avail of the voucher for two successive school years only. So if a student fails Grade 11, the voucher program will not cover the Grade 12 tuition anymore. But students can always enroll at a public SHS for free or at a private or non-DepEd schools at their own expense.
