OVERVIEW
Dubai Municipality is at the core of Dubai as a city:
the authority is involved in many aspects of the lives
of Dubai’s residents and steers a large part of the
city’s development into a even more livable urban
space.
In line with becoming one of the best and most
livable city’s in the world, and under HH Sheikh
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President
and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates
and Ruler of Dubai’s directive, Dubai has made its
ambition clear to adapt sustainable development
to preserve and increase the quality of living for
future generations. Dubai Municipality is committed
to fulfilling its responsibility within the Dubai Plan
2021 of the Executive Council to create “A Smart &
Sustainable City” (Developmental aim 4: The Place).
The city’s membership in C40 from September 2015
onwards has opened the door to a network of peers,
knowledge and joined action.
The commitment to sustainable development
poses unique challenges to the emirate in the Gulf,
surrounded by desert, in a hot and arid climate, an
uncommon makeup of nationals and many more
expats and a rapidly diversifying economy – for
whose solution not many role model cities exist yet.

Dubai Municipality has found solutions to many of these challenges,
ranging from the design of public spaces to irrigation of green
strips. It will share these success stories in a report outlining Dubai’
Municipality’s involvement in the city’s present and future economic,
environmental and social development.
The report is aligned with the themes and logic of the Global Reporting
Initiative (GRI) G4 framework, without being a corporate sustainability
report in the common sense but rather an analysis of the progress
made thus far and compendium of replicable success stories.
It is also the first step to prepare Dubai Municipality to issue fully
compliant GRI G4 reports in the future. The publication expected to be
released in December 2015.
