How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Sistema Operativo Windows
Un Sistema Operativo es un conjunto de programas que permiten manejar
tanto los recursos físicos (hardware) como los programas (software) en una
computadora. El sistema operativo es el programa principal que debe tener una
computadora y sirve de base para que se puedan ejecutar los programas
llamados de aplicación, que son los que nos ayudan a realizar diferentes
operaciones en la computadora: escribir, hacer dibujos, modificar fotografías,
navegar en Internet, diseñar presentaciones, etc. Sin sistema operativo, no
pueden funcionar las computadoras.
Al iniciar el sistema operativo, éste muestra una interfaz (el medio de
comunicación entre el usuario y la computadora, es decir, una pantalla o
imagen de fondo) que consta de diversos elementos, entre ellos el escritorio,
los iconos, la barra de tareas, etc., mismos que veremos a continuación.
Ventanas
3. Las ventanas son estructuras gráficas cuadrangulares previstas de eventos
y propiedades, en las cuales se llevan a cabo las operaciones y funciones de
las aplicaciones.
Las ventanas de Windows están formadas por:
Barra de Título, contiene el nombre del programa con el cual se está
trabajando (en este caso el ejemplo es de un programa llamado Microsoft
Word) y en algunos casos también aparece el nombre del documento abierto
(en este ejemplo el nombre es “no_descargar.doc”). En el extremo de la
derecha están los botones para minimizar, restaurar y cerrar.
Botón Minimizar convierte la ventana en un botón situado en la barra
de tareas de Windows.
Botón Maximizar amplia el tamaño de la ventana a toda la pantalla.
Botón Restaurar permite volver la pantalla a su estado anterior.
Botón de Cerrar se encarga de cerrar la ventana. En el caso de haber
realizado cambios en algún documento, al cerrar la ventana se desplegará
una nueva, mucho más pequeña, que te preguntará si deseas guardar los
cambios antes de cerrar.
4. Barra de Menús contiene las operaciones del programa, agrupadas en
menús desplegables.
Escritorio y sus elementos
Escritorio
Se le llama Escritorio al área en la que se ubican los Iconos de uso más
frecuente y donde se despliegan las aplicaciones en el momento en que se
ejecutan.
Aquí podrás encontrar la Barra de Tareas, así como el Botón Inicio; estos
dos elementos cumplen una función muy importante para Windows.
Botón Inicio da acceso al Menú Principal de Windows, donde se encuentra
entre otras, la opción Programas, ésta permite ejecutar cualquiera de las
5. aplicaciones instaladas en la computadora.
Barra de tareas, como lo vimos anteriormente, es una franja horizontal que
se encuentra en el escritorio y aparece en la parte inferior de la pantalla. En el
extremo izquierdo está el botón Inicio, a continuación tenemos la zona de
accesos directos, luego los programas abiertos y el área de notificación, junto
con el reloj (la hora que tiene registrada la computadora), además de que
también contiene los nombres de las aplicaciones que tengas abiertas, y en
algunas ocasiones pueden estar los iconos de acceso directo a diversas
aplicaciones como al Internet Explorer, al Outlook, y al propio Escritorio.

6. Accesorios de Windows
os programas que encontrarás agrupados en el rubro de Accesorios, tienen
la misión de ayudarte a iniciar un trabajo en Windows desde el primer
momento, incluso si no tienes ningún programa especial de edición de texto,
imagen, etcétera. Bloc de notas, Es un programa básico que te permite escribir
texto y guardarlo para su uso posterior.
* Lee el Bloc de Notas
Para guardar tu texto debes usar la opción Archivo y elegir Guardar.
En la opción Edición encontrarás las herramientas de Copiar y Pegar. Para
copiar, debes arrastrar el mouse seleccionando el texto que quieres copiar
(notarás que éste cambia de color), después debes elegir con clic la opción
Edición del menú y ahí seleccionar Copiar. Posteriormente, sólo tienes que dar
clic en el lugar donde quieres que aparezca el texto copiado, y ahí, después de
que se quede el cursor parpadeando, elegirás la opción Pegar del menú Editar.
7. ¿Cómo reemplazar una palabra por otra en todo el texto?
Usando la opción Reemplazar del menú Edición escribe la palabra a
reemplazar y en el otro espacio la palabra nueva. Al encontrar la palabra, el
programa te dejará confirmar si la reemplazas o no, puedes optar por buscar la
siguiente, sin reemplazar la palabra encontrada en ese momento. También
puedes indicarle que no te pregunte y reemplace todos los casos dentro del
texto. Paint es una aplicación para procesar archivos bitmap de Windows. Los
bitmaps son gráficos comúnmente usados en las computadoras (muchas de las
imágenes de fondo que se ven son:
8. bitmaps). Generalmente son muy grandes para usarlos en Internet. La
extensión para un archivo bitmap es ”.bmp”

arrastrando el ratón desde la
esquina del rectángulo hacia la
opuesta.
Borrador Arrastrar el ratón sobre lo
dibujado causará que se borre la
imagen tal como un borrador
físico.
Tintero Dar un clic en un área cerrada
causará que se llene de un color
preseleccionado.
Absorber Color En un momento dado, en el
diseño de un dibujo, los colores
que se aprecian no serán los que
conoces, este botón permite
seleccionar un color desde el
dibujo para no tener que
desperdiciar tiempo tratando de
encontrarlo. Absorbe el color de
uno y lo transfiere a otro.
9. Lupa Con este puedes agrandar un
área del dibujo.
Lápiz Con él puedes realizar dibujos a
mano alzada.
Brocha Al igual que el lápiz, permite
dibujar libremente, pero la brocha
permite elegir las formas de
círculos, cuadros, líneas y su
tamaño.
Aerógrafo Pinta superficies con puntitos,
como spray.
Texto Permite escribir en un área
determinada.
Línea Dibuja una línea recta entre dos
puntos
Curva Dibuja una línea recta, a la cual le
da una curvatura con el arrastre
del ratón.
Rectángulo Dibuja un rectángulo en la
pantalla, se arrastra desde un
vértice hacia su opuesto.
Polígono El polígono dibuja líneas y
ángulos en cada clic hasta que se
hace un doble clic y el polígono se
forma.
Elipse Dibuja una Elipse que se forma al
arrastrar el ratón.
Rectángulo redondeado
Dibuja un Rectángulo redondeado
