The Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, hitting American ships and bases. The battleship USS Arizona was heavily damaged by a bomb, which caused its ammunition to explode and break the ship apart. Over 2,300 Americans were killed and 1,100 were wounded in the attack. In response, President Roosevelt declared war on Japan the next day, calling the Pearl Harbor attack "a day that shall live in infamy."
