The sacrament of Holy Orders enables the Church to carry out Christ's mission through ordained ministers. There are three degrees of ordination - bishops, who are regarded as transmitters of the apostolic line; priests, who are co-workers of bishops; and deacons, who serve at a lower level of the hierarchy. The essential rite for all three degrees is the bishop's imposition of hands and a specific consecratory prayer asking God for the gifts proper to the ministry.
