The sacrament of Holy Orders enables the Church to carry out Christ's mission by establishing two types of priesthood: the common priesthood of all believers through baptism and confirmation, and the ministerial priesthood through ordination. Ordination confers an indelible spiritual character and takes place through three degrees - bishop, priest, and deacon - with bishops acting as successors of the apostles and able to ordain others and teach the faith authoritatively.
