Editor's Notes

  1. PRESENTATION NOTES: The University of Washington COVID-19 Prevention Plan helps ensure the health and safety of personnel by reducing the potential for COVID-19 transmission. This required training covers the key elements in the University’s plan for working safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Note: This training course was updated on 9/29/22.
  2. PRESENTATION NOTES: COVID-19 is a disease caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2. Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, but some people can become severely ill. Although most people with COVID-19 get better within weeks of illness, some people experience post-COVID conditions. Post-COVID conditions are a wide range of new, returning, or ongoing health problems people can experience more than four weeks after first being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. Older people and those who have certain underlying medical conditions are more likely to get severely ill from COVID-19. Vaccines against COVID-19 are safe and effective.
  3. PRESENTATION NOTES: COVID-19 spreads when an infected person breathes out droplets and very small airborne particles that contain the virus. These droplets and particles can be breathed in by another person or land on other person’s eyes, nose, or mouth. In some circumstances, the droplets may contaminate surfaces. People who are closer than 6 feet from the infected person are most likely to get infected. It is possible for transmission of COVID-19 to occur from inhalation of virus in the air at distances greater than six feet. Particles from an infected person can move throughout an indoor space and can linger, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces.   COVID-19 is spread from person-to-person in three main ways: · Breathing in air when close to an infected person who is exhaling small droplets and particles that contain the virus. · Small droplets and particles that contain virus land on your eyes, nose, or mouth, especially when an infected person coughs or sneezes. · Getting the virus on your hands after touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. It’s important to remember that a person who has COVID-19 may not have symptoms and may not know they are infected.
  4. PRESENTATION NOTES: It is essential that we take steps to protect ourselves and slow the spread of the virus. Our individual actions affect the health of our communities; we are all in this together. The goal of the University of Washington COVID-19 Prevention Plan is to prevent COVID-19 transmission and covers all University work environments with the exception of UW Medicine medical facilities which follow UW Medicine policies and procedures. In addition to this training, you may have a COVID-19 Prevention Plan for your work area or unit that will provide more specific information and guidance for you. It is optional for University units to implement a unit or site-specific COVID-19 Prevention Plan. If a unit chooses to implement a unit or site-specific plan, it should include all elements of the University Plan and be aligned with University policies and procedures.

The University’s vaccination requirement is detailed on the UW COVID-19 vaccination requirement webpage at www.uw.edu/coronavirus/vaccination-requirement.
  15. PRESENTATION NOTES: Note that it is not appropriate to ask UW personnel or students about their vaccination status in the classroom or the workplace. An individual’s vaccination status is private and confidential information; an individual may choose to voluntarily share that information with you if they wish, but it should not be asked about. Talk with your UW Human Resources Coordinator or Academic Human Resources Business Partner if you have questions about the University’s vaccination requirement.
  16. PRESENTATION NOTES: University units are required to take measures to prevent sick personnel from entering the worksite, and report suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases to the UW Environmental Health and Safety Department. Personnel and students are required to self-monitor daily for symptoms and stay home or go home if they are sick or have symptoms of COVID-19 infection that are not attributable to another condition. COVID-19 symptoms include: fever (100.4 degrees or higher) cough shortness of breath or difficulty breathing fatigue loss of taste and/or smell chills sore throat runny nose or congestion headache muscle or body aches If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you are required to follow these instructions: Stay home (or go home) and isolate away from other people, even if you have mild symptoms, regardless of your vaccination status. Follow the steps in the UW COVID-19 Public Health Flowchart located at www.ehs.washington.edu. Get tested for COVID-19. Do not go to work or class until you receive a negative test result, even if you feel better. The UW offers students and personnel several no-cost options for coronavirus testing at www.uw.edu/coronavirus/testing.
  17. PRESENTATION NOTES: If you test positive for COVID-19, take the following steps: 1. Report your positive test result to the University: Personnel and students are required to report their positive test result to the COVID-19 Response and Prevention team in the UW Environmental Health and Safety Department. Send an anonymous Exposure Notification from your mobile device to alert users of potential COVID-19 exposure. 4. Follow the steps in the UW COVID-19 Public Health Flowchart to help you recover from COVID-19 and protect others from getting sick. Refer to the University’s Isolation Guidance for detailed information on precautions, re-testing and when it is safe to return to work and/or class at www.ehs.washington.edu.
  18. PRESENTATION NOTES: Close contact means being within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for a cumulative total of at least 15 minutes during a 24-hour period (even if both individuals were wearing face coverings), living with or caring for a person who has COVID-19, or having direct contact with infectious secretions (such as being coughed on, kissing, or sharing utensils). An individual who had close contact and is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, is required to stay home, get tested, and follow the UW COVID-19 Public Health Flowchart.
  19. PRESENTATION NOTES: When the University is notified that a UW student, staff, faculty or other academic personnel tests positive for COVID-19, the COVID-19 Response and Prevention Team takes the following steps to maintain the health and safety of the campus community. The University works in coordination with local health departments on COVID-19 response efforts and complies with applicable privacy requirements. The University’s case response activities include: • Obtaining information about the person’s symptoms, locations on campus and close contacts. • Providing instructions and guidance for self-isolation. • Notifying the academic and/or work unit. This includes working with the unit to distribute a workplace/area notification when a COVID-19 positive person was present and potentially infectious to others. • Notifying UW-affiliated individuals or groups who were in close contact with the COVID-19 positive person within 48 hours prior to the development of symptoms (or, if asymptomatic, 48 hours before their COVID-19 test). • Providing return-to-work information to individuals who may need to self-isolate. The identity of individuals with COVID-19 and their close contacts is not publicly disclosed. It remains private among University representatives involved in the public health response, including EH&S representatives, unit representatives (as needed), and UW Human Resources or Office of Academic Personnel.   For more information about the University’s response to a positive case at a University location, visit the COVID-19 Case Response webpage at www.ehs.washington.edu.
  20. PRESENTATION NOTES: UW Human Resources and the Office of Academic Personnel provide information for staff and academic personnel regarding time away from work.   Talk with your Human Resources consultant or Academic Human Resources Business Partner about issues pertaining to your work area.   Guidance and protections for those at higher risk for developing more serious COVID-19 illness are also available on the UW Human Resources website.   University units should not request a doctor’s note or a negative test from students or personnel following a report of COVID-19 illness.
  21. PRESENTATION NOTES: You can reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 by doing the following: Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If water is not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid contact with people who are sick. Stay home when sick and avoid close contact with others, even if you are vaccinated against COVID-19. Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and immediately dispose of the used tissue.
  22. PRESENTATION NOTES: University units are required to clean (and disinfect as needed) their worksite surfaces regularly in accordance with the University’s COVID-19 Cleaning and Disinfection Protocol. Units are required to provide cleaning and disinfection products, along with the appropriate PPE and instructions for the frequency and safe use of products. University custodial units clean high touch surfaces in common areas of buildings, such as restrooms and stairwells. ● Clean work areas regularly. ● For surfaces and equipment touched by multiple workers, clean and disinfect daily, between uses, or when visibly unclean. ● For surfaces and equipment touched by one individual, clean and disinfect periodically, when unclean, as a minimum. Developing a shared cleaning schedule can help maintain a regular cleaning frequency. Use cleaning and disinfecting products provided by your unit. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use of all cleaning and disinfecting products and use required personal protective equipment. Refer to Appendix Table 1 of the University’s COVID-19 Cleaning and Disinfection Protocol for detailed information on the cleaning and disinfection frequencies in University spaces at www.ehs.washington.edu.
  23. PRESENTATION NOTES: All individuals at a University location, including faculty, staff, students, contractors, vendors and visitors must follow the UW COVID-19 Face Covering Policy to ensure the health and safety of the University campus community and the public. Face coverings are required to be worn indoors at the University of Washington, regardless of vaccination status, in healthcare settings, when conducting patient care activities, and on UW Shuttles serving healthcare. In all other indoor settings, face coverings are recommended when the COVID-19 Community Levels for King and Pierce counties are low, and strongly recommended when the Community Levels are medium. The UW COVID-19 Face Covering Policy is re-evaluated when community levels are high. Personnel and students who test positive for COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone who tested positive are required to wear a well-fitted face covering for the time period noted in the COVID-19 Public Health Flowchart. For more information, read the UW Face Covering Policy and frequently asked questions about University face covering requirements at www.ehs.washington.edu.
  24. PRESENTATION NOTES: There are three types of facemasks: cloth face coverings, surgical/medical procedure masks and respirators. • Cloth face coverings provide the lowest level of protection to the wearer. • Surgical/medical procedure masks provide better protection than cloth face coverings. • Respirators, such as an N95, provide the highest level of protection. When you wear a mask, choose a well-fitted, high-quality mask, such as a KN95, KF94, or N95 respirator, or surgical mask, which when worn helps protect you and those around you. UW employees who are not required to wear a respirator can voluntarily wear a respirator, such as an N95, for their personal use in the workplace. UW employees voluntarily wearing a respirator in the workplace must be provided with advisory information. Visit www.ehs.washington.edu to read the Advisory Information for Voluntary Respirator Use.
  25. PRESENTATION NOTES: The University of Washington is committed to maintaining a respectful, productive, inclusive, and equitable workplace, and discrimination and other conduct that is inconsistent with our values will not be tolerated. Personnel are expected to comply with the UW COVID-19 Face Covering Policy as a condition of employment, as well as for the health and safety of themselves, their colleagues, and the UW community. Talk with your supervisor or unit lead with any questions or concerns you have about face coverings. Members of the public, customers, visitors, vendors and contractors at a University location are required to follow the University's COVID-19 Face Covering Policy at all times when on campus, including posted requirements in specific buildings or spaces.
  26. PRESENTATION NOTES: University personnel may be required to wear a surgical/medical procedure mask or an N95 respirator in specific work settings, or if a risk assessment indicates it is required personal protective equipment (PPE). University personnel who are required to wear an N95 respirator due to job hazards and requirements must be medically cleared, trained, and fit tested per state requirements and the UW Respiratory Protection Program. Cloth face coverings are not a replacement for job-specific PPE requirements. Face shields can prevent direct exposure to expelled droplets and provide splash or spray protection from disinfectants but do not replace face coverings. Talk with your supervisor about the required PPE for your work activities and risk level.
  27. PRESENTATION NOTES: Units should evaluate whether additional or alternative strategies are necessary in their work settings based on their likelihood of exposure to COVID-19, such as in healthcare or other higher risk settings. Alternative strategies include: Keeping people with symptoms from entering the workplace; Using engineering controls, such as exhaust ventilation and physical barriers; Implementing testing protocols for higher risk activities, such as overnight assignments, and on research vessels; Using administrative controls, such as reduced meeting times, physical distancing where not already specified, stagger work shifts and/or breaks; Units may consider planning group gatherings in areas where personnel can physically distance from others; and In areas of low occupancy, units may take extra precautions for individuals who work alone.
  28. PRESENTATION NOTES: The University provides this general COVID-19 safety training that is required for all University personnel. All University units are required to communicate to personnel ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including reviewing the elements of the University’s COVID-19 Prevention Plan and any unit or site-specific COVID-19 prevention plans. Re-training is recommended annually or when significant changes have been made to the University Plan. Look for Stay Healthy, Huskies posters in common areas, such as in break rooms, lunch rooms, lobbies and bathrooms as reminders of measures to prevent COVID-19 transmission.
  29. PRESENTATION NOTES: We all have responsibilities for preventing the transmission of COVID-19 in the workplace. Remember to take these precautions to keep yourself and your coworkers safe, even if you are vaccinated against COVID-19: Watch for COVID-19 symptoms. Stay home and get tested if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, even if you are fully vaccinated or have mild symptoms. Notify the UW COVID-19 Response and Prevention Team if you test positive for COVID-19. Follow the University’s Isolation Guidance if you’ve tested positive or had a close contact exposure. Practice good hygiene. Clean and disinfect work surfaces and equipment before and after use. Use face coverings and/or personal protective equipment when required. Stay up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations.
  30. PRESENTATION NOTES: Contact the UW COVID-19 Response and Prevention Team at covidehc@uw.edu or (206) 616-3344 if you or another individual have confirmed or suspected COVID-19.
