Correlating Conjunctions
They come in pairs.
They are both helpful and fun!
Correlative conjunctions:
Both…..and
Not only….but also
Either….. or
Neither….nor (This pair makes you sound very mature!)
Whether….or
Correlative conjunctions are always used in
pairs. They join similar elements.
Both my grandfather and my father worked for Kia.
Bring either a salad or Rotel dip.
Corinne is trying to decide whether to go to the
movies or to go to the mall.
The storm damaged not only the school, but
also the grocery store.
Neither my brother nor my sister would help me
with my homework.
Talk to your neighbor about how you would revise these
sentences to include the correlating conjunctions in
parentheses. (There may be more than one correct answer.)
A poor diet can make you sleepy. Not enough exercise can make you sleepy.
(Both…and)
Both a poor diet and not enough exercise can make you sleepy.
Weight-bearing exercise strengthens your muscles. Weight-bearing
exercise strengthens your bones. (not only….but also)
Weight-bearing exercise not only strengthens your muscles, but also your
bones.
Kayla did not want to miss P.E. class. Shayla did not want to miss P.E. class.
(neither….nor)
Neither Kayla nor Shayla wanted to miss P.E. class.
You can exercise in the morning. You can exercise in the evening. (either….or)
You can either exercise in the morning or in the evening.
Try to match the green sentence halves with the purple sentence halves. Pay
attention to the correlative conjunctions to guide you.

Answer these questions using a pair of correlative
conjunctions. (both ... and, not ….only, but… also, either
... or, neither ... nor) You can talk with a partner about your
answer. Is there more than one way to answer these
questions?

You are studying Math. Are you studying English?
You need to work on the weekend. Do you need to work in the evening?
You don't eat fish. Do you eat beef?
He collects marbles. Does he baseball cards?
They haven't visited California. Have they visited Utah?
Combine the sentences using a pair of correlative conjunctions. (both ... and,
not ….only, but… also, either ... or, neither ... nor) Jot your revised sentences
in your Writing Notebook.
We could fly. We could go by train.
She will have to study hard. She will have to concentrate to do well on
the exam.
Jack is not here. Tom is in another city.
The speaker will not confirm the story. The speaker will not deny the
story.
Pneumonia is a dangerous disease. Small pox is a dangerous illness.
Fred loves traveling. Jane wants to go around the world.
It might rain tomorrow. It might snow tomorrow.
Playing tennis is good for your heart. Jogging is good for your health.
To improve your sentence fluency
and make your writing sound
more mature, use correlative
conjunctions!
They come in pairs.

  • 2. Correlative conjunctions: Both…..and Not only….but also Either….. or Neither….nor (This pair makes you sound very mature!) Whether….or
  • 3. Correlative conjunctions are always used in pairs. They join similar elements. Both my grandfather and my father worked for Kia. Bring either a salad or Rotel dip. Corinne is trying to decide whether to go to the movies or to go to the mall. The storm damaged not only the school, but also the grocery store. Neither my brother nor my sister would help me with my homework.
  • 4. Talk to your neighbor about how you would revise these sentences to include the correlating conjunctions in parentheses. (There may be more than one correct answer.) A poor diet can make you sleepy. Not enough exercise can make you sleepy. (Both…and) Both a poor diet and not enough exercise can make you sleepy. Weight-bearing exercise strengthens your muscles. Weight-bearing exercise strengthens your bones. (not only….but also) Weight-bearing exercise not only strengthens your muscles, but also your bones. Kayla did not want to miss P.E. class.
