included among the partners list. Keeping in view of the importance Menstrual
Hygiene Management in Schools and Communities, It was decided by WASH
United Team was decided that the celebration of month activities from May 01 to

Activities of IRSP
First Advocacy Meeting
MenstrualHygiene Day is celebrated on May 28 each year. IRSP is celebrating the month of May as Menstrual
Hygiene Month this year and has planned many activities to mobilize and sensitize the people, NGOs and
government agencies to divert their attentions to this important matter.
In series of these activities IRSP has conducted the first advocacy meeting with REHNUMA the national
NGOs- who are working on the reproductive health in the country.
IRSP focal person of MHM Ms.Shazia Sardar facilitated the meeting which was participated by the office staff
of these two NGOs.
These NGOs are working since long in Pakistan on reproductive health but the menstrual hygiene was never
been their subject during hygiene. They were oriented about the different aspects of MHM and the work of IRSP
in Pakistan.
The district Manager of REHNUMA agreed that they will incorporate the MHM in their next year planning
which will be started from month of July 2015. During the next year they will integrated MHM into their
hygiene promotion component and will train the LHWs and community on hygiene promotion. The idea of low
cost sanitary pads was very much clicked. They revealed that they have planned the making of low cost sanitary
pads in their next year budgeting where they are looking for IRSP technical support for its implementation and
scale up. IRSP has committed its full support for their interventions.
It was agreed that further meetings will also be carried out in future to make an appropriate action plan and scale
up the MHM interventions in the country.
Sanitation Fare
Sanitation situation especially latrine coverage in Pakistan is
not very encouraging. According to Pakistan Social and
Living Standard Measurement (PSLM) 2012-13 report, 23%
of the total population in Pakistan lacking latrine facilities at
home, it includes 22% rural and 1% urban households.Which
results in Open Defecation (OD), the survey further says that
40 Million people in Pakistan are practicing open OD.
Various actors are striving to improve the coverage and
introducing different low cost material that could be adopted
by poorpeople.
Integrated Regional Support Program (IRSP) is also working on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in
different part of the province. IRSP is known as the resource agency for piloting and scaling up “Community
Led Total Sanitation” (CLTS) approach in Pakistan. IRSP with financial support of Citizen Engagement for
Effective Social Services Delivery (CESSD) implemented CLTS project in 4 districts of the province i.e.
Abbottabad,Chitral, Mansehra and Nowshehra. The project was followed by short-termconsultancy where
IRSP in the targeted areas conducted a research study assessing the existing low cost latrine options, use,
acceptability, the reason(s) why the low cost latrine technologies are not adopted by the people and identifying
gaps in CLTS process. The sanitation fare was arranged to share the findings of the study, hearing from experts
about sanitation and low cost latrine technologies, its impact on environment and provided an opportunity to
other organizations showcasing their work on low cost latrine options.
Mr. Saif Ullah presented the research study carried out under this assignment in 4 districts of Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa i.e. District Abbottabad,Chitral, Mansehra and Nowshehra. The study aimed to assess the existing
low cost latrine options, use, acceptability, and the reason why the low cost latrine technologies are not adopted
by the people and identifying gaps in CLTS process. It was shared that the construction of latrine was increased
in result of the CLTS interventions, people who were reluctant to use latrines are now using latrine at home,
about 80% participants responded that the latrines are not constructed due to poverty and people are practicin g
open defecation.
To get betterresults of CLTS interventions, the study recommended to select the villages as per criteria, the
facilitator should be strong enough i.e. must have command over the process, regular follow up mechanism
should be placed and local vendors and masons should be made the part of CLTS meeting at communities so
that they can answer the people questions and can help them constructing low cost latrines. The study also
suggested making the supply side much strongerso that they can pick the right option and construct household
latrine.
The 2nd speaker Dr. Sher Jamal (NUST Islamabad) presented his experience/views on low cost and improved
toilets.
Mr. Bilal (water and sanitation program-South Asia (WSP-SA))in his presentation highlighted the key
reasons for not constructing latrines or reasons of OD and the assistance provided by WSA-SA to have better
solution of the existing situation. It was shared that WSP-SA through partner organizations and govt.Institutions
is striving to declare the villages 100% free of OD. On advocacy side, they are taking sessions with the govt.
officials as well as engaging them in exposures to othercountries observing best practices and preparing ground
to replicate the successfulmodels in Pakistan.
The last presentation by Mr. Dr. Bahadur Nawab Khattak (COMSAT Abbottabad) was about innovations in
sanitation. The presentation in broader sense defined sanitation, sanitation models and paradigm shift in
sanitation. It was stated that currently the conventionalmethod is adopted in Pakistan which is expensive, water
dependent, wastage of nutrients and not based on any scientific evidences. This model is now replaced by
sustainable sanitation which needs to be adopted in Pakistan. The objective is to protect human health and the
environment while limiting the use of water in sanitation systems for hand and (anal) washing only and
recycling nutrients to help reduce the need for artificial fertilizer in agriculture.
Ms. Sumaira (Akhtar Hameed Khan Trust Rawalpindi) shared her experience on working with govt.
officials. She asked WASH actors to be committed with their work and should work parallel to govt. institutions
as provision of water and sanitation services is mainly the responsibility of govt. i.e. Municipal committees and
PHED.
Tree Plantation Campaign in Bajuar Agency
IRSP in collaboration with forest department launched its tree plantation campaign with schools children and
community members for improved and better environment in 30 villages of Bajuar Agency FATA. Tree
Planting Campaign help connects studentsand community members to the benefits of trees and fosters
environmental stewardship. Plantation campaign began with gathering of students, teachers, community, WMCs
& TIJs member with a spirit that trees are high values and importance. Trees play a vital role in protecting our
environment by guarding waterways by intercepting storm water, stabilizing soil and using nutrients that would
otherwise wash into waterways. Environmental benefits such as clean air and water. Trees help moderate
temperature. They even help improve air quality by absorbing some airborne compounds that could be harmful
to us,and by giving off oxygen. Spending time around trees and in nature also makes us healthier and ev en
improves our students’academic performances.
For the purpose 1100 plants of different but indigenous species (Cheer, Deodar & Shawa) were planted in 14
CBECs and one Government Girls primary & middle school.
Let’s plant a tree experience:
‘Plant a Tree’ has been an extraordinary experience for us. We have been able to see the joy of kids who want to
do something for the environment. The students were extremely happy to participate in this initiative, their level
of participation was high, some students participated out of curiosity others understood pretty well the
importance of what they were doing.
Plantation Campaign at CBEC Kass Krewand:
CBEC Kass Krewand is located in Tehsil Wara Mamoond. The center total strength is 150 (70 Girls 80 Boys).
“Plantation Campaign” provided to the students with an awareness message that the plants are very important
for environmental pollution and it’s an opportunity not just to rehabilitate their schoolalso for students to learn
valuable environmental lessons through tree planting sessions. The centerhave provided 25 plants of three
different species,(Dewodar, Cheerh and Shewa), these trees are very good for the hilly areas where they took a
short time to grow. These trees would provide shelter to the centerstudents in sunny days and very helpful for
other small agricultural practices. So these trees would have multiple benefits to this school and to the
environment.

Management falls under two SDG goals, namely goal 4 which focuses on
ensuring inclusion and equitable quality education and promotion of lifelong
learning opportunities for all. And SDG goal 6 focusing on ensuring
availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. This
means MHM has a serious impact on the education, health and dignity of women and girls. So basically, we
cannot talk about universal education and services for all and leave out menstrual hygiene management.
Keeping in view this background, during this quarter,
AGAHE celebrated world menstrual hygiene day on
28th may, 2015 at schooland community level as well

competition, quiz competition regarding menstrual
hygiene awareness and to break the silence around
menstruation.
