The Taliban employ various types of IEDs in their attacks and operations against US and Afghan forces. They use vehicle-borne IEDs ("car bombs") to breach fortified positions and ambush convoys. Suicide bombings target assassinations, provocations, and intimidation of local leaders. Remote-detonated and victim-operated roadside bombs are often used against dismounted patrols. Complex attacks involve the coordinated use of IEDs, RPGs, and small arms to disable vehicles and pin down patrols for follow-on assaults. IEDs are also used for area denial and delaying operations to force troops and aid organizations out of vulnerable areas.
