CNN started the 24-hour news cycle in 1980 which changed news delivery across various mediums. Traditionally, newspapers had early and late editions while TV and radio had scheduled news broadcasts throughout the day. Now, all mediums from newspapers to internet provide near constant news coverage to fill 24-hour cycles, with breaking updates increasingly shared over Twitter. This non-stop news environment has led outlets to cover more international stories to occupy airtime and maintain audiences, though the drive for profits remains unchanged.
