PM CHIDES RIVALS FOR BASHING DECISION; ATTENDS ‘NARI

Prayagraj: Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi
took a jibe at the Sama-

the marriage of women
to 21 has caused pain to
some. PM Modi was ad-

attended by over two
lakh women.
Taking a swipe at
his rivals, PM Modi
said women are hap-

The country is taking
this decision for its
daughters. Everyone is
seeing who is having
problems with this...it

some,” he said.
PM’s remark follows

FORMULA
s reports pile up
about Russia’s mili-
tary mobilization on
Ukraine’s border and
the Kremlin’s diplo-
matic demands, questions
abound. What is going on? What
will come next? Will Russia in-
vade? In fact, Russian President
Vladimir Putin is following an
eight-year-old script.
In the fall of 2013, Putin’s gov-
ernment launched a multifac-
eted offensive to prevent
Ukraine, Moldova, and Armenia
from signing free-trade agree-
ments with the European Un-
ion. That set off a gradually
deepening crisis that would pro-
foundly alter Ukraine’s domes-
tic politics, Russia’s position in
Europe, and the future of NATO.
Less than a year later, Russia an-
nexed Crimea and embarked on
a barely disguised effort to dis-
mantle the rest of Ukraine. The
Kremlin then launched two
more incursions into eastern
Ukraine to save the separatist
statelets that it had managed to
set up there. Since then, 14,000
people have died in this low-level
“frozen” conflict.

A
fter a year in
which people
longed to get back
to “normal,” it is
now clear that
COVID-19 will not make this
possible. The pandemic, now
heading into its third year,
has profoundly affected indi-
viduals, communities, coun-
tries, and international coop-
eration, creating four tough
challenges for 2022. Rebuild-
ing trust will be critical to
confronting all of them.
The first challenge is that
people’s relationship to work
has changed. In some coun-
tries, lockdowns, the death of
loved ones, and the general
uncertainty of the pandemic
have prompted or accelerated
arethink.IntheUnitedStates,
the number of workers quit-
ting their jobs exceeded four
million in each month from
July to October 2021. Many
young Chinese are joining the
“lie flat” movement by opting

ing the bare minimum to get

, and striving for only what
is absolutely essential for sur-
vival.Thepandemichasdeep-
ened the divide between those
who can work from home and
the many who cannot.
In 2022, people need to
trust that going back to work
will genuinely improve their
lives. Getting to that point
will require action by both
governments and companies.
Investment to help remedy
the disruption in education
caused by COVID-19 is cru-
cial. Some 1.6 billion students
in 180 countries were kept out
of school as a result of the
pandemic. Establishing pro-
grams to help students catch
up – and gain the skills and
training needed for the twen-
ty-first-century economy –
will help them get better jobs.

KMC OUTCOME A REASON
TO REJOICE FOR TMC
ven as the Trinamool supre-
mo was busy with the Goa
campaigning, her party work-
ers were led by Abhishek Ba-
nerjeeduringtheslogoversto
the run up to the crucial KMC
elections and on Tuesday
, the
TMC left its indelible mark on
the civic polls. By noon, the
writing on the wall was clear.
TMC had taken a lead in 133
out of 144 wards in the Kolka-
ta Municipal poll elections.
Earlier, the elections were
held on December 19 which
registered a 64 per cent turn-
out. With this civic poll vic-
tory, it was TMC’s third con-
secutive win in the Kolkata
Municipal elections.
As the TMC was leading in
133 of 144 KC seats while this
article was being written,
party supremo and West Ben-
gal CM Mamata Banerjee
said TMC maintained a
“landslide victory” as they
work at the grassroots. “Kol-
kata is now the safest city (in
the country). We have al-
ready beautified the city
. My
intention now is to see that
urban area, semi urban area
and village areas are devel-
oped,” she said.
Earlier, on Sunday sporad-
ic incidents of violence, in-
cluding hurling of two crude
bombs at two booths, marred
the KMC elections on Sunday
as nearly 40.5 lakh voters ex-
ercised their franchise.
In 2015, TMC had won 113
seats which was, so far, the
highest in recent times and
this year it has broken its
previous records turning the
Opposition into absolute
minnows. All the 16 boroughs
have been under the control
of Trinamool Congress.
Till late noon, no one from
the saffron camp had given
any comment neither was
there any tweet.
In a little over six months,
that the TMC has again
drubbed the BJP… but this
time the BJP was minus the
star power.
The TMC has bettered its
positionintheKMCbyatleast
20 seats as compared to the re-
sults of 2015 KMC elections.
It may be recalled earlier
that despite the starry cam-
paign by the BJP in 2021, the
TMC managed 215 seats and
BJP ended with 77. And by
November-end… defections
and desertions had reduced
the BJP to 70 and left the
TMC hovering around 221.
The Assembly poll story
might be hugely rejoicing for
the TMC, but Mamata had to
prove a point as she had lost
to Suvendu Adhikari in a
keenly contested contest at
Nandigram. She, however,
fought back and was su-
premely in power from Bha-
wanipore. Since then, Didi as
she is fondly known, has left
for the national vista to
broaden her party’s pros-
pects. Earlier, during the elec-
tion day… the Leader of Op-
position and BJP leader, Suv-
enduAdhikarihadsaid…“We

gar Police has no role and this
is not the jurisdiction of Kol-
kata Municipal polls. My resi-
dence is in Bidhanagar Mu-
nicipality area and the police
have no right to stop us.”
Even the West Bengal Gov-
ernor,JagdeepDhankhar,had
tweeted, “Leader of Opposi-
tion has communicated “In

totally blocked by Bidhanna-
garpolicewhere20BJPMLAs
including some state leaders
stayed. regards Suvendu
Adhikari Lop WBLA”. He also
mentioned that a delegation
of BJP MLAs will meet him
today on the issue.
However, in politics it is
kabhi khushi kabhi gham. If
the KMC outcome was a rea-
son to rejoice overwhelm-
ingly, grapevine has it that
Mamata who flew to Guwa-
hati to seek the blessings of
Ma Kamakhya and from
there she is expected to visit
Shillong where everything is
not so fine for the party
.
Frombeingtheprincipalop-
position party in Meghalaya
until of late, a beleaguered
Congress decided to support
the ruling National People’s
Party led by CM Conrad Sang-
ma,in“interestof thepeople.”
“We have decided to offer
our support to the govern-
ment on the aspect of govern-
ance in greater interest of
the people of Meghalaya,”
Congress leader Ampareen
Lyngdoh said.
In November, the Congress
suffered a huge loss when 12
of its 17 MLAs led by former
chief minister Mukul Sang-
ma defected to the Trina-
mool. The development re-
duced the Grand Old Party
(Congress) to a smaller party
and made the Trinamool the
state’s principal opposition
in a matter of time.
But in deciding to support
the current government, the
CongressgotclosertotheBJP
,
an NPP ally and a constituent
of the Meghalaya Democratic
Alliance (MDA) government.
The Trinamool said after it
emerged in Meghalaya, the
Congress was, perhaps, feel-
ing threatened. “But our in-
tention is not to threaten any-
body. We want to build the
party that will work for the
people,” TMC state chief
Charles Pyngrope said.
Mamata, as political sourc-
es say… will visit Shillong
after her Guwahati trip to
gauge the situation.

The plea filed by the

Govt plans review plea for

New Delhi: The Union
government plans to file
a review petition in the
Supreme Court to allow
political reservation of
other backward classes
(OBC) in local bodies
and municipal corpora-
tions “for the time be-
ing” till the states meet
the criteria set by the

statement issued late on
Monday said.
The government plan
comes after the Su-

over the past fortnight,
struck down 27% reser-
vation for OBCs in local
body elections in Maha-

How apt is Cong’s appointment of in-charges?
Sharat K Verma
New Delhi: Is any work
being done in the Con-
gress party under some
plan, or is it a free meal
for all? This important
question is being raised
by party leaders and in
informal conversations,
the party leaders have
raised several logical
questions regarding the
appointment of Con-
gress in-charges.
Like some time back,
questionhadarisenasto
why Harish Rawat was
keptinchargeof Punjab
when elections are to be
held simultaneously in
Punjabandhisownstate
Uttarakhand?
He was earlier in
charge of Assam, from
where he was made in
charge of Punjab. Simi-
larly
, now it is being
asked that Imran
Masood has been made
in charge of Delhi even
whenthereisanelection
in his own state Uttar
Pradesh. Meanwhile
therearetalksof Masood
joiningtheSPbuthewas
madein-chargeof Delhi.
However, perhaps the
biggest question of all
this is as to why is Dev-
endra Yadav made in
charge of Uttarakhand?
Yadav vote in the state is
negligible and there is a
kind of prejudice to-
wards Yadavs since the
firing on the agitators
of Uttarakhand under
Samajwadi Party rule.
It is worth noting that
in 1994 when Mulayam
Singh Yadav was the
Chief Minister, seven
people were killed at
Rampur Tiraha when
agitators demanding
for the state of Uttara-
khand were fired upon.
Even though Devendra
Yadav has nothing to do
with Mulayam Singh
Yadav, but only after lis-
tening the word Yadav,
people here get upset.
Brahmin and Rajput
voters are in majority
in the state but Con-
gress has kept Deven-
dra Yadav as in-charge.

B(AD) HUNGER
BJP leaders’ hunger to share
space with Prime Minister
Narendra Modi became a
laughing stock in Uttar Pradesh
when advertisements published
in several newspapers featured
the names of more than 15
ministers ahead of the kick off of
a mega scheme on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in
Prayagraj on Tuesday
inaugurated schemes for women
and SHGs where he pushed for
developing women giving them
more power. However, in the run
up to this event, several ads
dotted the newspapers across
the state. What caught people’s
attention was the presence of
names of several ministers from
the state, their juniors and
various others. The images
featuring the ad did rounds
across various forums and
platforms as to how, as elections
are nearing in Uttar Pradesh,
leaders are trying to fetch the
cherry from the cake. For most
ministers, who have remained
elusive from work throughout
the course of four and a half
years or so, featuring with the
Prime Minister is an opportunity
to grab the eyeballs that could
otherwise be difficult. With
politicos pressing every ounce
of their energy ahead of
Assembly elections, people
would surely get more
opportunities to witness the ad
flamboyance riding on their own
monies.

BJP’s joining committee collects all info about the person who wants to join the party

MLA Jitendra Singh Ba-
blu joining BJP has
sparked a controversy
within the ruling Party
with senior leaders rais-
ing fingers on the crimi-
nal past of the new en-
trant in the party
.
As Bablu is the main
accused in an arson
case, in which the resi-
dence of the BJP MP
from Prayagraj, Rita
Bahuguna Joshi, was
burnt down in 2009. Al-
though BJP had to can-
cel Bablu’s membership
after a sharp protest,
but taking lessons from
this episode, BJP has
made the joining pro-
cess very strict.
It is noteworthy that
former BJP state presi-
dent, Dr Laxmikant Ba-
jpai, has been made the
chairman of the BJP’s
joining committee. The
members of this com-
mittee are Deputy Chief
Minister Keshav Mau-
rya, Dinesh Sharma
and State Vice Presi-
dent Dayashankar Sin-
gh. This committee car-
ries out strict screening
of leaders who want to
join BJP from other par-
ties. These leaders have
to go through a rigorous
scanning process. They
have to state, while giv-
ing their resume, that
there are no criminal
cases pending against
them; in cases where
the joining committee
suspects, those leaders
are duly verified from
their respective police
stations.
While talking to First
India Dr. Laxmikant
Bajpai, President of
BJP’s Joining Commit-
tee, said, “Information
about every person who
wants to join BJP is
taken from the con-
cerned District Presi-
dent and Regional Pres-
ident. If needed, feed-
back is also taken from
other sources regarding
criminal antecedents.
As it is our priority that
no person from a crimi-
nal background should
become a part of our
party
. At the same time,
the utility of the con-
cerned person to the
party and any possible
loss due to his induction
is also assessed”.
According to a top
party functionary
, there
are strict instructions
from the party high
command that the mem-
bership drive should be
given impetus, but it
must be ensured that
people with a tainted
image among the public
cannot become a part
of the Saffron party
.

Lucknow: The Sama-

BJP in Uttar Pradesh
of resorting to misuse
of money and govern-
ment resources to gath-
er crowds for rallies
addressed by Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi.
In a letter addressed
to the Chief Election
Commissioner, SP’s
state unit chief Naresh
Uttam Patel said, “In
the rally of the Prime
Minister held in Praya-
graj (on Tuesday), hun-
dreds of UPSRTC buses
and private buses in
large numbers were ar-
ranged with he help of
RTO (regional trans-
port officer) in order to
gather crowds. This is a
misuse of government
machinery and money
.”
He also said the
Prime Minister is a
BJP MP from Uttar
Pradesh, and only few
days are left for the an-
nouncement of the
election dates.
The Prime Minister
is holding rallies and
addressing people for
BJP’s electoral prepa-
rations and Chief Min-
ister Yogi Adityanath
is misusing the govern-
ment machinery and
money, Patel said.
The Samajwadi Par-
ty leader urged the
Election Commission
to ensure free and fair
elections and stop the
BJP government in the
state from misusing
government machin-
ery and money.

How do you feel
about winning the
title of first-ever
Mrs Uttar Pradesh-
Queen of Virtue?
A: Winning always
comes with a feeling
of glory and that’s
what I felt. I felt sud-
den bursts of positiv-
ity and achievement.
It felt surreal and
with the confidence
of ‘I can do anything.’
What was your
thought when you
entered the pag-
eant?
A: I was hesitant at
first, as I come from a
background of aca-
demics and the world
of beauty pageants
are considered
unconvention-
al. But after ful-
filling my de-
cided duty of be-
ing a scholar at
IIM followed
by an as-
s i s t a n t
profes-
sor job
at the OP
General Uni-
versity, Lucknow
and becoming a
mother, I wanted to
explore more. I
wanted to do some-
thing for myself
which challenges
me on many levels,
emotionally, physi-
cally and mentally,
and that’s why I en-
tered Mrs Ut-
tar Pradesh.
How did you deal
with the pres-
sure and
nerv-
ousness
during
the prep-
arations?
A: To deal with
the nervousness
and anxiety of it all,
I had my family and
friends as my biggest
support system who
helped me redirect
my focus every time
I felt under-confi-
dent. Apart from
that, the grooming
team of Mrs Uttar
Pradesh helped us
ace every aspect right
from posing to walk-
ing the ramp to an-
swering the ques-
tions.
Word of advice for
the aspiring Mrs
Uttar Pradesh par-
ticipants.
A: I’d like to say, first
and foremost, try and
notice what you’re
good at and what you
need to improve fol-
lowed by avoiding
negative comments
and third, focus on
your overall well be-
ing, both physical and
mental. In the end,
you’ll always end with
a better version of
yourself.

A state government spokesperson said that special secretary of the Uttar Pradesh govern- ment Rajnish Chandra has sent the letter in which he has drawn the attention of both the authorities towards the Majhwar caste which is mentioned at number 53 in the list of SCs of the UP government. The memorandum given to the state gov- ernment by Sanjay Ni- shad, president of the Nishad Party, has also been attached with the letter. The Nishad Party is a BJP ally in UP. Sanjay Nishad has stated in his letter that Majhi, Majhwar, Kewat, Mallah and Nishad sur- namesareusedbypeople of Majhwar caste in dif- ferent areas of the state. “Due to the use of various surnames, they are not issued SC cer- tificates whereas other SC people using vari- ous surnames are get- ting benefits meant for SC members,” he said. “He has demanded that all the people with sur- name of Majhwar caste should also be given SC certificates,” the spokesperson added. Amit Shah had earlier assured the commu- nity that the govern- ment would fulfil their demands and re- solve all the problems. However, Shah did not mention the reserva- tion issue at the joint BJP-Nishad rally in Lucknow on Decem- ber 17, that angered the community who went on rampage at the venue. What is going on? What will come next? Will Russia in- vade? In fact, Russian President Vladimir Putin is following an eight-year-old script. In the fall of 2013, Putin’s gov- ernment launched a multifac- eted offensive to prevent Ukraine, Moldova, and Armenia from signing free-trade agree- ments with the European Un- ion. That set off a gradually deepening crisis that would pro- foundly alter Ukraine’s domes- tic politics, Russia’s position in Europe, and the future of NATO. Less than a year later, Russia an- nexed Crimea and embarked on a barely disguised effort to dis- mantle the rest of Ukraine. The Kremlin then launched two more incursions into eastern Ukraine to save the separatist statelets that it had managed to set up there. Since then, 14,000 people have died in this low-level “frozen” conflict. PROJECT-SYNDICATE.ORG A fter a year in which people longed to get back to “normal,” it is now clear that COVID-19 will not make this possible. The pandemic, now heading into its third year, has profoundly affected indi- viduals, communities, coun- tries, and international coop- eration, creating four tough challenges for 2022. Rebuild- ing trust will be critical to confronting all of them. The first challenge is that people’s relationship to work has changed. In some coun- tries, lockdowns, the death of loved ones, and the general uncertainty of the pandemic have prompted or accelerated arethink.IntheUnitedStates, the number of workers quit- ting their jobs exceeded four million in each month from July to October 2021. In 2022, people need to trust that going back to work will genuinely improve their lives. Getting to that point will require action by both governments and companies. Investment to help remedy the disruption in education caused by COVID-19 is cru- cial. Some 1.6 billion students in 180 countries were kept out of school as a result of the pandemic. Establishing pro- grams to help students catch up – and gain the skills and training needed for the twen- ty-first-century economy – will help them get better jobs. PROJECT-SYNDICATE.ORG KEY TO COVID POWERED CHALLENGES OF 2022 The first challenge is that people’s relationship to work has changed. By noon, the writing on the wall was clear. TMC had taken a lead in 133 out of 144 wards in the Kolka- ta Municipal poll elections. Earlier, the elections were held on December 19 which registered a 64 per cent turn- out. With this civic poll vic- tory, it was TMC’s third con- secutive win in the Kolkata Municipal elections. As the TMC was leading in 133 of 144 KC seats while this article was being written, party supremo and West Ben- gal CM Mamata Banerjee said TMC maintained a “landslide victory” as they work at the grassroots. “Kol- kata is now the safest city (in the country). We have al- ready beautified the city . My intention now is to see that urban area, semi urban area and village areas are devel- oped,” she said. Earlier, on Sunday sporad- ic incidents of violence, in- cluding hurling of two crude bombs at two booths, marred the KMC elections on Sunday as nearly 40.5 lakh voters ex- ercised their franchise. In 2015, TMC had won 113 seats which was, so far, the highest in recent times and this year it has broken its previous records turning the Opposition into absolute minnows. All the 16 boroughs have been under the control of Trinamool Congress. Till late noon, no one from the saffron camp had given any comment neither was there any tweet. In a little over six months, that the TMC has again drubbed the BJP… but this time the BJP was minus the star power. The TMC has bettered its positionintheKMCbyatleast 20 seats as compared to the re- sults of 2015 KMC elections. It may be recalled earlier that despite the starry cam- paign by the BJP in 2021, the TMC managed 215 seats and BJP ended with 77. And by November-end… defections and desertions had reduced the BJP to 70 and left the TMC hovering around 221. The Assembly poll story might be hugely rejoicing for the TMC, but Mamata had to prove a point as she had lost to Suvendu Adhikari in a keenly contested contest at Nandigram. Sharat K Verma New Delhi: Is any work being done in the Con- gress party under some plan, or is it a free meal for all? This important question is being raised by party leaders and in informal conversations, the party leaders have raised several logical questions regarding the appointment of Con- gress in-charges. Like some time back, questionhadarisenasto why Harish Rawat was keptinchargeof Punjab when elections are to be held simultaneously in Punjabandhisownstate Uttarakhand? He was earlier in charge of Assam, from where he was made in charge of Punjab. Simi- larly , now it is being asked that Imran Masood has been made in charge of Delhi even whenthereisanelection in his own state Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile therearetalksof Masood joiningtheSPbuthewas madein-chargeof Delhi. However, perhaps the biggest question of all this is as to why is Dev- endra Yadav made in charge of Uttarakhand? Yadav vote in the state is negligible and there is a kind of prejudice to- wards Yadavs since the firing on the agitators of Uttarakhand under Samajwadi Party rule. It is worth noting that in 1994 when Mulayam Singh Yadav was the Chief Minister, seven people were killed at Rampur Tiraha when agitators demanding for the state of Uttara- khand were fired upon. Even though Devendra Yadav has nothing to do with Mulayam Singh Yadav, but only after lis- tening the word Yadav, people here get upset. Brahmin and Rajput voters are in majority in the state but Con- gress has kept Deven- dra Yadav as in-charge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Prayagraj on Tuesday inaugurated schemes for women and SHGs where he pushed for developing women giving them more power. While talking to First India Dr. Laxmikant Bajpai, President of BJP’s Joining Commit- tee, said, “Information about every person who wants to join BJP is taken from the con- cerned District Presi- dent and Regional Pres- ident. If needed, feed- back is also taken from other sources regarding criminal antecedents. As it is our priority that no person from a crimi- nal background should become a part of our party . At the same time, the utility of the con- cerned person to the party and any possible loss due to his induction is also assessed”. According to a top party functionary , there are strict instructions from the party high command that the mem- bership drive should be given impetus, but it must be ensured that people with a tainted image among the public cannot become a part of the Saffron party . How do you feel about winning the title of first-ever Mrs Uttar Pradesh- Queen of Virtue? A: Winning always comes with a feeling of glory and that’s what I felt. I felt sud- den bursts of positiv- ity and achievement. It felt surreal and with the confidence of ‘I can do anything.’ What was your thought when you entered the pag- eant? A: I was hesitant at first, as I come from a background of aca- demics and the world of beauty pageants are considered unconvention- al. But after ful- filling my de- cided duty of be- ing a scholar at IIM followed by an as- s i s t a n t profes- sor job at the OP General Uni- versity, Lucknow and becoming a mother, I wanted to explore more. I wanted to do some- thing for myself which challenges me on many levels, emotionally, physi- cally and mentally, and that’s why I en- tered Mrs Ut- tar Pradesh. How did you deal with the pres- sure and nerv- ousness during the prep- arations? A: To deal with the nervousness and anxiety of it all, I had my family and friends as my biggest support system who helped me redirect my focus every time I felt under-confi- dent. Apart from that, the grooming team of Mrs Uttar Pradesh helped us ace every aspect right from posing to walk- ing the ramp to an- swering the ques- tions. Word of advice for the aspiring Mrs Uttar Pradesh par- ticipants. A: I’d like to say, first and foremost, try and notice what you’re good at and what you need to improve fol- lowed by avoiding negative comments and third, focus on your overall well be- ing, both physical and mental. In the end, you’ll always end with a better version of yourself.
