Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is the company responsible
for electricity transmission and distribution within the Indian state Uttar
Pradesh.
For efficient operation & management Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation
Limited (UPPCL) is further restructured into-
1. Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (DVVNL)-Agra Zone
2. Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (MVVNL)-Lucknow Zone
3. Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PVVNL)-Meerut Zone
4. Purvanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PUVVNL)-Varanasi Zone
5. Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (KESCO)-Kanpur City
ABOUT UPPCL
SUBSTATION
• A substation is a place which is used for switch generation
(one voltage level to another voltage level).
• So the substations may be called as link between generation
stations and consumers.
•Type of substation
1. Indoor substation- All equipment are mounted inside, safer
and require lesser space.
2. Outdoor substation- All equipment are mounted outside and
require more area.

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF 220 KV SUBSTATION
• POWER TRANSFORMER
• POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER
• CURRENT TRANSFORMER
• CIRCUIT BREAKERS
• LIGHTENING ARRESTOR
• PROTECTIVE RELAYS
• ISOLATOR
POWER TRANSFORMER
• Transformer is a static machine, which
transforms the potential of alternating current
at same frequency.
• It works on the principle of mutual
inductance.
• They are of two type step up and step down .
• Two transformer are used in Shahjahanpur
substation
• 160 MVA ( for 220/132kv)
• 40 MVA (132/33kv)
COMPONENT OF POWER
TRANSFORMER
POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER
• The potential transformer may be defined as
an instrument transformer used for the
transformation of voltage from a higher
value to the lower value.
• Potential transformer(also called as voltage
transformer) are a parallel connected type of
instrument transformer.
• The potential transformer is made with high-
quality core operating at low flux density so
that the magnetizing current is small.
CURRENT TRANSFORMER
• A current transformer is used for
measurement of alternating electric current.
• It produces a current in its secondary which
is proportional to the current in its primary.
• Current transformers are the current-
sensing units of the power system and are
used at generating stations, electrical
substations, and in industrial and
commercial electric power distribution.
CIRCUIT BREAKER
• A circuit breaker is an automatically
operated electrical switch designed to protect
an electrical circuit from damage caused by
excess current from an overload or short
circuit.
• Its basic function is to interrupt current flow
after a fault is detected.
• Unlike a fuse, which operates once and then
must be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset
(either manually or automatically) to resume
LIGHTNING ARRESTERS
• Lightning arrester diverts the abnormal
high voltage to the ground without affecting
the continuity of supply.
• It is connected between the line and earth,
i.e., in parallel with the equipment to be
protected at the substation.
• It should not draw any current during
normal operating condition.
• The lightning arrester is located close to the
equipment that is to be protected
PROTECTIVE RELAYS
• Protective relay work as a sensing device, it
senses the fault, then known its position and
finally, it gives the tripping command to the
circuit breaker.
• The circuit breaker after taking the command
from the protective relay, disconnect.
• Primary sensing unit .
ISOLATOR
• It is an off-load device.
• It disconnects or isolates the circuit from the
main power supply.
• Isolators may provide additional safety
features like, when switched of the trapped
charge will be ground through a ground
terminal in the isolators
• They are also used in homes to provide
essential safety and protection against any
electrical problem.
FEEDER
• A set conductor that originate at a primary
distribution centre and supply power to
one or more secondary distribution centre
• Feeders are the power lines through
which electricity is transmitted in power
systems.
• Feeder transmits power from Generating
station or substation to the distribution
points.
