Phil. 3:12-14 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
1. We must accept God's sacrifice for our sins through Jesus. Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross as the atoning sacrifice for all.
2. We must obey God's commands by keeping His word. Those who claim to know God but do not obey His commands are liars. True obedience comes through walking as Jesus walked.
3. We must walk as Jesus walked through obedience to God. Jesus is our example in living a sinless life through perfect obedience to the Father. We overcome sin by obeying God's word just as Jesus obeyed.
The document discusses the topic of prayer based on passages from 1 John. It makes several key points: prayer should be according to God's will; Jesus' prayers were always in line with God the Father's will; there are some sins so serious they cannot be forgiven, referred to as a "sin unto death"; and we can pray for repentant believers who commit sins that don't lead to death, but not for unrepentant sinners. The purpose of intercessory prayer is also discussed.
Prayer is the believer's breath. As we cannot live without breathing neither can a Christian without prayer. This study describes the nature of prayer and the believer's compassion for a fellow Christian who sins.
The document discusses the four identities mentioned in John 3:16. It states that the first is God, who loves the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son. The third identity is God's son, who was given by God as an undeserved gift to pay the price for humanity's sins. The fourth identity is "whosoever believes"; God wants everyone to have the opportunity to be saved through belief in his son.

This document outlines five commitments that define a Christian, including seeking God passionately, obeying God joyfully, and connecting with other followers of Jesus by building accountable relationships. It defines accountable relationships as those in which individuals call each other to account for their faith, and explains six essentials for building such relationships: meeting face-to-face regularly, using God's word, being honest beneath surface levels, developing trust, and spurring spiritual growth.
This document contains information about the Deerfoot Church of Christ congregation including contact details, service times, leadership, and upcoming events. Lecture made by Sir Jojo Esposa Jr. about his personal experiences regarding Filipino Deaf Culture's perspective on relationships and what the Bible has to say about it.
The document discusses Christian beliefs about life after death, judgment, and salvation. It states that after physical death, one's soul will face judgment by God for sins committed on earth. The wages of sin is said to be the "second death" of condemnation. However, it notes that through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, who died for humanity's sins, one can be forgiven and receive eternal life rather than condemnation. It urges the reader to repent now and accept Jesus as their savior to avoid facing judgment and the lake of fire after death.

1) The document analyzes Peter's spiritual crisis after denying Jesus three times, and how Jesus restored his confidence. Peter resigned from his leadership role and went fishing, despairing over his failure.
2) Jesus met Peter and asked him three times if he loved Him. This broke the shame of Peter's denials and restored his confidence in Jesus' love and in his calling.
3) The document emphasizes that Jesus defines believers by their willing spirit, not their weak flesh. God wants us to have confidence that He loves and esteems us in our weakness, and that our calling remains.

Repentance is the first step in beginning a walk with God and is vital to maintaining that relationship. Repentance involves acknowledging one's sins and faults, resolving not to repeat offenses, and attempting to live according to God's teachings. It requires admitting guilt, making amends, and living a life that pleases God. While humans often justify sins based on circumstances, the Bible teaches that God does not condone sin in any form. True repentance involves understanding what displeases God, acknowledging one's sinful nature, repenting of sins, and seeking to live righteously according to God's will. Repentance is fundamental to having a relationship with God and finding redemption through faith in Jesus Christ.
5th November 2016 - Is sinless perfection in this life possible?Thorn Group Pvt Ltd
The document discusses whether it is possible for Christians to achieve sinless perfection in this life. While some Bible passages like Matthew 5:48 command perfection, the Greek word translated as "perfect" can also mean "complete" or "mature". As humans, we cannot be as perfectly sinless as God. The Bible shows that even spiritual leaders like the Apostle Paul still struggled with sin. When Jesus returns, believers will be fully like him and free from sin, but until then the goal is to grow in maturity and resist temptation through God's strength. God provides a way to overcome sin and will complete the good work begun in believers. So Christians should not claim sinless perfection but instead confess sins to a faithful God who forg
The document discusses the characteristics of true friendship through examples from the Bible. It provides several examples of Jesus forgiving people and being friends with them, despite their sins. True friends will forgive mistakes, can relate to each other, introduce people to Christ through their lives, extend help to those in need, and will never abandon each other. Friends can depend on each other and should forgive each other seventy-seven times.

The document provides revision notes for a religious studies exam on living the Christian life. It covers several key topics:
- The Ten Commandments and what they teach about respecting God and others.
- Teachings from the Sermon on the Mount on displaying religion, the Law of Moses, money, judgement, and the Golden Rule.
- How Christians can express values like service to others, compassion, concern for suffering, helping those in need, and seeking justice.
- The example of Mother Teresa in showing Christian values through service, compassion, and concern for the oppressed.
The document gives examples of exam questions testing understanding of these concepts through outlining, explaining, and discussing
This document discusses the power of forgiveness from a Christian perspective. It defines forgiveness as granting pardon without resentment. It explains that Christians must receive God's forgiveness for sins and forgive others to be forgiven. Jesus' death provided a way for sins to be forgiven. The document emphasizes that Christians must forgive others as instructed by Jesus in order to receive forgiveness from God. It provides examples from the Bible of Jesus and Stephen practicing extreme forgiveness even while being killed to encourage Christians to adopt an attitude of forgiveness.
This document presents seven reasons why we should forgive. First, forgiveness is a gift to yourself that allows you to truly love without resentment. Second, people who hurt you are often hurting themselves and crying out for love. Third, unresolved resentment from one's past can cause anger issues. Fourth, anger can be dangerous and cause mistakes that hurt loved ones. Fifth, as children of God, we should choose to be peacemakers like our Father. Sixth, we only have one heart that cannot be divided between love and hatred. Seventh, according to the law of reciprocity, what we do comes back to us multiplied, so we should love our enemies and pray for them instead of retaliating.
The document is a lesson plan on forgiveness from Central Union Church of Christ in Killeen, Texas. It discusses what forgiveness means, the importance of forgiveness in Christianity, and how to practice forgiveness. The key points made are:
1) Forgiveness means releasing others from guilt and letting go of resentment rather than forgetting or changing emotions.
2) Christians are commanded to forgive others as God forgives them. Not forgiving others damages one's relationship with God.
3) Forgiveness is an act of the will, not tied to emotions. It involves deciding to "send away" offenses each time they are remembered.
4) Refusing to forgive only hurts oneself, while forgiveness promotes healing and
The document discusses the path of forgiveness as a journey with steps including loss, anger, acceptance, learning, forgiveness, and restoration. Forgiveness is described as a bridge that carries people from hurt to greater peace and acceptance. It involves choosing love over fear and allows one to regain a sense of wholeness. The path of forgiveness weaves through memories to restore what was lost and come to terms with one's life story.
Repentance is the first step in beginning a walk with God and is vital to maintaining that relationship. Repentance requires acknowledging one's sins and faults, resolving not to repeat offenses, and attempting to live according to God's teachings. It includes admitting guilt, making amends, and following God's word. While humans often justify sins, true repentance requires recognizing actions that displease God and refraining from such sins to restore our relationship with Him. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ and his sacrifice, but one must confess and renounce sins to find mercy.
The document discusses confronting people about their spiritual priorities, especially when facing death or surgery. It warns against relying on psychedelic drugs or New Age practices instead of Jesus Christ. While a positive attitude can aid health, only faith in Christ offers eternal life. The Bible condemns sorcery and predicts deception through drugs in the last days. Believers must lovingly warn others from falling for this and help them find salvation through repentance and faith in Christ alone.
The document discusses the concept of forgiveness from a biblical perspective. It defines forgiveness as releasing or dismissing charges against someone. It also defines unforgiveness as holding a grudge. It notes that true forgiveness requires obedience to God's command and is rewarded by Him, though it is difficult to do naturally. The document examines examples of forgiveness in both the Old and New Testaments. It discusses how Jesus taught his followers to turn the other cheek rather than seek retaliation when wronged.
The document discusses the doctrine of justification through faith in Jesus Christ. It provides several key observations about justification: 1) It is based solely on the blood of Jesus, not any righteousness within the person; 2) It declares a person righteous in God's sight, rather than making them inherently righteous; 3) It is an all-or-nothing status rather than a graded scale; 4) It goes beyond a mere pardon by satisfying justice through Christ's atoning sacrifice. Justification is received through faith alone as the instrument, and it is a permanent status rather than something that must be regained after sins.
The document discusses the idea of "big sins" and "little sins" and argues that from God's perspective, all sins are equal as they are violations of His law. It provides several biblical examples to support this, such as lies and theft being sins regardless of scale. While legal systems may see degrees of crimes, God is concerned with the heart and whether one has disobeyed His commands. The document emphasizes that as Christians we must accept our sinfulness, have faith in Jesus for salvation from all sins, and consciously work to avoid sinning in any form.
1) The document discusses what our purpose and ambition should be based on scripture. It says our ambition on earth should be to please God and avoid his wrath and judgment after death.
2) It explains that sin brings God's punishment of death, and discusses how people wrongly try to pay for their sins through good works, obeying commandments, prayers, and sacrifices, rather than accepting God's solution.
3) God's solution is that Jesus, being sinless, took our sins and died in our place so we can be forgiven and made righteous through faith in him. The response required is to repent, which means turning from sin and trusting in Jesus.
Get a solid, Scriptural understanding of what exactly it is that God wants. This short publication provides an easy-to-understand overview of the Bible and what exactly it means to have "faith" in Jesus Christ. From http://www.eternalanswers.org/
The document discusses the path to heaven and eternal life according to God's word. It explains that eternal life is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. While good works, sincerity, and following religious rules cannot save us, we can receive eternal life by acknowledging our sin, believing in Jesus as the Son of God who died and rose for our salvation, and surrendering our lives to him in prayer. The document encourages responding to God's offer of salvation through faith in Jesus.
God created Adam and Eve but warned them not to eat from the tree of knowledge. Adam disobeyed and brought sin and spiritual death to humanity. The law shows us our sin, and the penalty for sin is death. But God sent his son Jesus to die on the cross and take the punishment for our sins, so that all who believe in him will have eternal life rather than eternal death.
The document provides an in-depth discussion of the doctrine of justification according to Christianity. It discusses that Jesus knew no sin and committed no sin or deceit. It explains that for our sake, God made Jesus to be sin so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. It describes how God charges our sins to Jesus' account and his righteousness to our account, so that through faith in Christ we are seen as righteous in God's sight.
A brief treatment on the reason for celebrating Advent; why Jesus Christ came into the world; what it means to be saved; how to become a Christian; by Todd Linn, PhD, preachingtruth.org
1) God's plan is to give people eternal life through his son Jesus Christ. However, sin separates people from God and deserves death as punishment.
2) Jesus paid the penalty for sin by dying on the cross. Through faith in Jesus, people can be forgiven of their sins and gain eternal life.
3) To receive salvation, one must acknowledge their sins, believe in Jesus, and commit their life to following him. By praying to accept Jesus, one becomes a child of God and gains eternal life.
1) Repentance means turning away from sin and turning towards God by surrendering one's life to Jesus. Sin separates man from God but Jesus bridged that gap through his death on the cross.
2) To truly repent, one must acknowledge their sins rather than justify them. Sins destroy us just as physical wounds can kill if not treated. We must acknowledge our sins and turn to Jesus, our doctor, for forgiveness and cleansing.
3) True repentance changes our entire lifestyle and personality as we live to please God rather than man. It is a personal choice to let God change us from the inside out through turning back to him and returning to the right path.
Dorenthea Nemeth tells her story of the worst time in her life, being married to a man who has just been sentenced to 16 years in prison and suddenly finding herself alone, with two small children to care for. She lost her home and everything she had. However, in spite of it all, her faith in God helped her to endure this horrific storm in her life.
In this book she encourages readers that no matter what, God is in control and He will bring you through. Dorenthea went from tragedy to triumph and she lets her readers know that they can do the same, as long as they don't give up--no matter what.
The document discusses the topic of guilt from a Christian perspective. It makes three key points:
1) Feelings of guilt can be a blessing because they push us to seek forgiveness from God for our sins. However, some people sin so much that they become numb to feelings of guilt.
2) For Christians, the goal is to reach the kingdom of God, but sin prevents this. True repentance and turning to God in faith are needed to have sins wiped away.
3) When Christians feel guilty, they should confess their sins to God, ask Him to reveal any sins in their life, and remember that God has promised to forgive through the blood of Jesus Christ. False guilt from Satan can be
Why did God give the Law - so high, So demanding, So unreasonable humanly speaking that no body (no man, no woman, no boy, no girl) has ever been able to keep them?
Sin originated with Lucifer's pride and rebellion against God in heaven. Lucifer attempted to dethrone God and establish himself as equal to God, which was the first sin. When humans sinned by disobeying God in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world. The Bible defines sin as anything that goes against God's will, standards or laws. There are sins of commission by doing what is wrong, and sins of omission by not doing what is right. All humans sin and fall short of God's glory. The nature of sin is that it defiles, is rebellion against God, and shows ingratitude despite all God provides.
1) Sin is defined as any thought or action that goes against God's commands and separates us from Him. All people sin and fall short of God's standards.
2) The punishment for sin is death, but God provided salvation through Jesus Christ. By believing in Jesus and repenting of sins, one can be forgiven and gain eternal life.
3) To gain salvation, one must acknowledge they are a sinner, accept Jesus as savior, repent of sins through a change in thoughts and actions, and seek to live according to God's teachings by reading the Bible. This path leads to being dead to sins and beginning a new life strengthened by one's spirituality.
The document discusses the meaning of "knowing God". It argues that knowing God is not merely subjective or based on feelings, but rather is an objective interactive relationship with God as revealed in Scripture. It involves understanding God's character through His Word and obeying His commands, not just having beliefs or experiences. Several Bible verses are presented showing that knowing God involves action, transforming the whole person, and having assurance rather than just feelings.

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.

Astronism, Cosmism and Cosmodeism: the space religions espousing the doctrine...Cometan
This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.

Lição 12: João 15 a 17 – O Espírito Santo e a Oração Sacerdotal | 2° Trimestr...OmarBarrezueta1

21 What To Do About Sin, 1 John 5:16-21
1. What To Do About Sin 1 John 5:16-21 Adapted from a Steve Shepherd sermon http://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/what-to-do-about-sin-steve-shepherd-sermon-on-sin-general-150327.asp
2. 1 John 5:16 NET If anyone sees his fellow Christian committing a sin not resulting in death, he should ask, and God will grant life to the person who commits a sin not resulting in death. There is a sin resulting in death. I do not say that he should ask about that. 17All unrighteousness is sin, but there is sin not resulting in death.
3. 18 We know that everyone fathered by God does not sin, but God protects the one he has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us insight to know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This one is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.
4. Perhaps you heard about the other version of John chapter 8 when the woman was caught in adultery.Jesus saw a crowd chasing down a woman to stone her and approached them. "What’s going on here, anyway?" he asked. "This woman was found committing adultery, and the law says we should stone her!" one of the crowd responded.
5. "Wait," yelled Jesus. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Suddenly, a stone was thrown from out of the sky, and knocked the woman on the side of her head. Jesus said, "Aw, c’mon, Dad. I’m trying to make a point here!"
6. It is true that we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. And it is true that we all deserve to die because of our sin. And it is true, however, that Christ bore our sins in His body on the tree. It is true that He became sin for us so that we could become the righteousness of God. It is true that He tasted death for all mankind because of sin.
7. And it is also true that if we are without sin then and only then can we cast the first stone! But we are often pretty quick to cast stones at people. We all tend to be guilty of stoning others! But we should be quicker to cast stones or condemn sin in our own lives before we do it to others! Billy Sunday did that.
8. It was said that preacher Billy Sunday, the baseball evangelist and reformer of the 1930‘s, never spared himself nor those he wanted to help in his attacks on sin. He thundered against evil from the Gay Nineties through the Great Depression. He preached Christ as the only answer to man’s needs until his death in 1935.
9. He said, “I’m against sin. I’ll kick it as long as I’ve got a foot, and I’ll fight it as long as I’ve got a fist. I’ll butt it as long as I’ve got a head. I’ll bite it as long as I’ve got a tooth. When I’m old and fistless and footless and toothless, I’ll gum it till I go home to Glory and it goes home to perdition.”
10. I like Billy Sunday’s spirit and fire for the Lord! It sounds like he was truly converted. Billy Sunday was right about sin. He knew what to do about sin! Kick it, fight it, butt it, and send it away to perdition, destruction and damnation!Of course, we can’t do this without the Lord’s help. No one can fight sin or the devil by himself. It takes a far greater power than what we have. Greater is He who is in us!
11. What should we do about sin and those who commit sin? Our text gives us the proper action. 1- Pray for the one who commits a sin2- Trust God to keep you safe3- Realize the world is under control4- Stay away from idols
12. PRAY FOR THE ONE WHO COMMITS A SIN 1 John 5:16 NET If anyone sees his fellow Christian committing a sin not resulting in death, he should ask, and God will grant life to the person who commits a sin not resulting in death. There is a sin resulting in death. I do not say that he should ask about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, but there is sin not resulting in death.
13. A preacher got pulled over for speeding and he said to the officer, "Blessed are the merciful" And the police officer replied, "Go and sin no more!”Nice thought, but it doesn’t work that way. The police are not in the forgiving business. “Serve & Protect!” Their job is to enforce the law thus serving by protecting us from the possible results when the laws are not obeyed.
14. Verses 16–17 illustrate the kind of petition we can be sure God will answer. 1 John 5:14 NET And this is the confidence that we have before him: that whenever we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, then we know that we have the requests that we have asked from him.
15. “sin that leads to death”In the context of this letter directed against Gnostic teaching, which denied the incarnation and threw off all moral restraints, it is probable that the “sin that leads to death” refers to the Gnostics’ adamant and persistent denial of the truth and to their shameless immorality.
16. This kind of unrepentant sin leads to spiritual death. Another view is that this is sin that results in physical death. It is held that, because a believer continues to sin, God in judgment takes his or her life (cf. 1Co 11:30). In either case, “sin that does not lead to death” is of a less serious nature. (NIVSB notes)
17. The prayer of one human being can never cancel another's free-will. If God's will does not override man's will, neither can a fellow-man's prayer. When a human will has been firmly and persistently set in opposition to the Divine will, our intercession will be of no avail.
18. To divide sins, on the authority of this passage, into venial (easily forgiven or excused) and mortal classifications, is to misunderstand the whole argument of the Epistle and to seduce the conscience. St. John only means that though prayer can do much for an erring brother, there is a willfulness against which it would be powerless: for even prayer is not stronger than free-will. (Coffman)
19. There is such a sin referred to in the New Testament, a sin for which there is no forgiveness “either in this age or in the age to come.” Matthew 12:31 NET For this reason I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.32Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven.
20. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. Mark 3:29 NET But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternal sin" If there is such a sin, there is no impropriety in supposing that John would refer to it here. (Barnes)
21. Warren Wiersbe believes John is talking about “habitual” sin, where someone continues to walk in that sin. What is this “not resulting in death?” Are some sins worse than others? I thought all sin was alike? Commentator William Barclay says that the sin “not resulting in death” is where a man sins but hates his sin, is ashamed of it and wants to hide it.
22. He really doesn’t want to sin. Whereas the sin to death is when a man rejoices in his sin and doesn’t see anything wrong with it. He boasts of it and glories in it. How can we know what sin is “resulting in death” and what sin is “not resulting in death”? There may be times when it’s hard to distinguish since we are not God and cannot discern like He does.
23. Galatians 6:1 NET Brothers and sisters, if a person is discovered in some sin, you who are spiritual restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness. Pay close attention to yourselves, so that you are not tempted too. 2Carry one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
24. This is, most certainly is not, “sin resulting in death.” For the most part, whenever we see a brother or a sister who has sinned, we must pray for them and let God do the rest. Instead of being judgmental and/or condemning we should quietly pray for them, asking God to have mercy on them and give them the grace to get over it.
25. It’s kind of a shotgun like prayer, because we may not be able to discern whether their sin is “resulting in death” or “not resulting in death.” WE PRAY AND LET GOD TAKE CARE OF THE MATTER.
26. James 5:16 NET So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great effectiveness. You pray for me and I’ll pray for you. That’s what we should do because we all sin! It’s just that some sins are more obvious than others!
27. TRUST GOD TO KEEP YOU SAFE 18We know that everyone fathered by God does not sin, but God protects the one he has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him.
28. When Billy Sunday was converted and joined the church, a Christian man put his arm on the young man’s shoulder and said, “William, there are three simple rules I can give to you, and if you will hold to them you will never write ‘backslider’ after your name. Take 15 minutes each day to listen to God talking to you; take 15 minutes each day to talk to God; take 15 minutes each day to talk to others about God.”
29. This young convert was deeply impressed and determined to make these the rules of his life. From that day onward throughout his life he made it a rule to spend the first moments of his day alone with God and God’s Word. Before he read a letter or looked at a newspaper, he went first to the Bible, that the first impression of the day might be what he got directly from God. WAY TO GO, BILLY!
30. Warren Wiersbe wrote: “What breathing is to a physical man, prayer is to a spiritual man. If we do not pray, we will “faint.” (Luke 18:1 KJV) Prayer is not only the utterance of the lips, it is also the desire of the heart.”He also said, “Prayer is not spiritual self-hypnosis. Nor do we pray because it makes us feel better (although it probably does).
31. We pray because God has commanded us to pray and because prayer is the God-appointed means for a believer to receive what God wants to give him. Prayer keeps a Christian in the will of God. Living in the will of God keeps a Christian in the place of blessing and service. We are not beggars; we are children coming to a wealthy Father who loves to give His children what they need.”
32. How do we trust God to keep us safe from sin, the world, the flesh, and the devil? WE PRAY! We not only pray for others but also for ourselves.“Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil!” (Matt 6:13) And Lord, keep us out of the devil’s territory. Put a block in our way to keep us out!
33. If we don’t daily walk with God, we will walk with someone else. If we don’t daily walk with God, commune with God, talk to God, how can we expect Him to protect us and keep us safe?Matthew 26:36 NET Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
34. 37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and became anguished and distressed. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me." 39 Going a little farther, he threw himself down with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me!
35. Yet not what I will, but what you will." 40Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "So, couldn't you stay awake with me for one hour? 41Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
36. Jesus said it well. “the flesh is weak.” We all are weak at times, but is our spirit willing? Do we want to do right? THEN WE MUST PRAY AND PRAY HARD. This is the way to trust the Lord for safety and protection from evil.
37. REALIZE THE WORLD IS UNDER CONTROL 19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us insight to know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This one is the true God and eternal life.
38. The Sunday school teacher was describing how Lot’s wife looked back and suddenly turned into a pillar of salt. Little Johnny piped up and said, "Hey, my mother looked back while she was driving and turned into a telephone pole."
39. Sometimes we are not always alert when we are driving. How many of us have reached to pick something off the seat or floor & took our eyes off the road. When your eyes are focused back where they should be you find your car in the wrong lane, or on the shoulder? Alertness pays off when driving. Alertness pays off especially when living the Christian life! Often, we’re more alert when driving our cars than we are driving our lives!
40. 1 Thessalonians 5:5 NET For you all are sons of the light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of the darkness. 6 So then we must not sleep as the rest, but must stay alert and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night and those who get drunk are drunk at night.
41. 1 Peter 5:8 NET Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour. Haven’t you noticed that some people are not very alert in life? And especially, when it comes to evil?
42. In 1939, a coast guard vessel was cruising the Canadian Arctic when the men spotted a polar bear stranded on an ice floe. It was quite a novelty for the seamen, who threw the bear salami, peanut butter, and chocolate bars. Then they ran out of the food. Unfortunately, the polar bear hadn’t run out of appetite, so he proceeded to board their vessel.
43. The men on ship were terrified and opened the fire hoses on the bear. The polar bear loved it and raised his paws in the air to get the water under his armpits. We don’t know how they did it, but eventually they forced the polar bear to return to his ice pad -- but not before teaching these seamen a horrifying lesson about feeding polar bears.
44. Some people make the same mistake with sin that these sailors nearly made with the polar bear. They begin feeding it, a little at a time without thinking through the consequences. “It says something about our times,” writes Willard D. Ferrell, “that we rarely use the word ‘Sinful’ except to describe a really good dessert.”
45. Peter advises we “be sober and alert!” Clearly those who warn us about importing worldly things into our lives, our homes and our workplaces are correct. We must be vigilant to prevent those things from entering our lives. Desensitization is too tame a word for this danger. “Deadly spiritual carnivores” is better. These demonic forces have been leaving the shells of God’ s prized children along the Way for centuries.
46. 19We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.Even though late night comedians make fun of what’s happening in the world and it’s craziness, surely we realize that the world as a whole is under the power of the evil one?! IT’S NOT FUNNY AT ALL!
47. Galatians 3:22 NET But the scripture imprisoned everything and everyone under sin so that the promise could be given — because of the faithfulness of Jesus Christ — to those who believe. The world is a restless evil. Haven’t you noticed? Crime, corruption, violence, murder, abuse, rape, etc. How can this be? One word. One name. Satan.
48. John 8:44 NET You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
49. STAY AWAY FROM IDOLS 21Little children, guard yourselves from idols.1 Corinthians 5:11 NET But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who calls himself a Christian who is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or verbally abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.
50. 1 Corinthians 6:9 NET Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, 10 thieves, the greedy, drunkards, the verbally abusive, and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God.
51. Stay away from idols. Why would John say those words? I suspect because it was a real problem. And if it was a problem back then, what about today? Personally, I think the sin of idolatry is worse in our day and time! NAME THAT IDOL.
52. We know about the “American Idol” TV show. It’s one of the most popular reality shows there is. But the American Idol is everywhere, in the sense, that Americans have their idols. NAME THAT IDOL. Or maybe name your idol!
53. Today we can allow many things to become idols or gods to us. Money, fame, work, pleasure or even family can become gods when we concentrate too much on them for personal identity, meaning, and security. Including family in this list might make some defensive. Listen to Jesus. Matthew 10:37 NET For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law,
54. 36and a man's enemies will be the members of his household. 37"Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. The disciple must love and follow Jesus supremely. Our devotion to Jesus must come above even our own household.
55. We should expect that normally, following Jesus makes us better husbands, fathers, wives, mothers, sons, daughters and so forth. Yet there are times when the presence of Jesus divides rather than unifies. The greatest danger of idolatry comes not from what is bad, but from what is good - like love in family relationships. The greatest danger to the best comes from second best. (Guzik)
56. No one sets out with the intention of worshiping these things. But by the amount of time we devote to them, they can grow into gods that ultimately control our thoughts and energies. Letting God hold the central place in our lives keeps these things from turning into gods.
57. An “idol” or “god” is whatever people put first in their lives… many of us worship other gods by building our lives around something other than the one true God. If your greatest desire is for friendships, popularity, or money, you are devoting yourself to something other than God.
58. To put God first: 1. Recognize what is taking His place in your life; 2. Renounce this “substitute god” as unworthy of such devotion; 3. Ask God for forgiveness; 4. Restructure your priorities so that love for God is the motive for everything you do; 5. Examine yourself daily to be sure you are giving God first place.
59. NAME YOUR IDOL. We’d probably rather not do that. Idol worship could be our biggest sin problem in America. And this is why John said, “guard yourselves from idols.” If we don’t keep away from idol worship they will keep us away from worshiping the Lord.
60. What to do about sin. Why should we do anything at all? What’s so bad about sin? Romans 6:23 NET For the payoff of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. What’s so bad about sin? Sin is what separates from God. And God couldn’t stand this and this is why He sent Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins.
61. It’s time to take a stand against sin. All sin. Especially our own sin. We must pray for those caught in sin. We must pray for God to keep us from sin. We must realize that the world lives in sin and is controlled by the evil one. This is why we must do all we can to war against sin and evil!
