20th Century Fox was formed in 1915 by William Fox through merging two of his companies, creating an early example of vertical integration in the film industry. Some of 20th Century Fox's most popular and highest grossing drama films of the 20th century include Avatar, Black Swan, Slumdog Millionaire, and Australia. Avatar, directed by James Cameron, was the most successful making over $500 million worldwide with $200 million spent on production and development of new motion capture and 3D technologies. While Avatar told an unconventional story through its setting on the made-up planet Pandora, it also included conventional dramatic elements like tension, character relationships, and eliciting emotion from audiences.
