Studying the bacterium as a pathogen/infectous agent
Where does it normally stay?
How did it get out of its habitat?
How did it reach the host?
How did it enter the host?
How did it overcome the host’s defense system to cause
disease?
How do we isolate it from the diseased host?
How do we identfy and confrm it?
How do we control the pathogen?
What’s on the menu?
7. Class attendance and
Participation
Blended learning continues.
This semester we are going to have more onsite sessions and fewer online sessions 66% face
to face : 33% online.
Classes will be conducted online using VUTela (Blackboard Collaborate Ultra). Attendance
registers will be taken during online sessions. A student is marked ‘late’ after 15 minutes and
‘absent’ after 30 minutes after the class started.
• Familiarize yourself with the VUTela interface and make sure you can access this module and
its classroom (https://help.blackboard.com/Learn/Student)
• Practical sessions will be held in the F203-Microbiology laboratory.
• The two-hour practical sessions and one-hour follow-up practical sessions are both compulsory.
100% practical attendance is non-negotiable!
• Come to the practical prepared, knowing the objectives of the practical, and direct your queries
to the instructor and not your fellow student,

Class attendance and Participation
• VUT is not clear on their class attendance policy, however regular attendance (not less than 70%) is
recommended and might be enforced. Attendance register will be regularly signed.
• This semester we will be flipping the classroom more often. This approach has proven to be beneficial
in reinforcing learning. It will be explained in our first/ orientation session.
• Students cannot use consultation hours to catch up on what they missed when they were absent
without a valid reason.
• Punctuality cannot be overemphasized
• English remains the medium of instruction at VUT. Tests, assignments, lab reports and examination
will be in English (sms terminology not accepted) however, multilingualism will be allowed during
class discussions and interaction.
• Assessment feedback will be discussed in class shortly after the assessment is written, however
students are still encouraged to consult for further clarity.
