The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

5 Public speaking tips from TED - Visualized summarySpeakerHub
From their humble beginnings in 1984, TED has grown into the world’s most powerful amplifier for speakers and thought-leaders to share their ideas. They have over 2,400 filmed talks (not including the 30,000+ TEDx videos) freely available online, and have hosted over 17,500 events around the world.
With over one billion views in a year, it’s no wonder that so many speakers are looking to TED for ideas on how to share their message more effectively.
The article “5 Public-Speaking Tips TED Gives Its Speakers”, by Carmine Gallo for Forbes, gives speakers five practical ways to connect with their audience, and effectively share their ideas on stage.
Whether you are gearing up to get on a TED stage yourself, or just want to master the skills that so many of their speakers possess, these tips and quotes from Chris Anderson, the TED Talks Curator, will encourage you to make the most impactful impression on your audience.

meemaken. Machtig toch? En
mijn vader is natuurlijk ook heel
trots op hem. We missen beide
geen wedstrijd van hem.”
BFC zit toch al in de familie,
want de broer van opa Anton,
Arie Ebbelaar,haalde ook het eer-
ste en zijn zoon Charles even-
eens. Antoon: ,,Het is niet dat we
het elke minuut over BFC heb-
ben, maar het komt wel veel
langs in gesprekken natuurlijk.
steeds. We hebben echt een
blauw-wit-rood-hart.” Zijn
vrouw Petra zit in de jubileum-
commissie. ,,Er zijn nog meer fa-
milies waarvan meerdere fami-
lieleden hier spelen of vrijwilli-
gerswerk doen.
jongens krentenbrood. Echte ka-
meraadschap.”
Voor Joeri (24),Antoon (54) en An-
ton (81) Ebbelaar is er maar een
club en dat is BFC.
’We hebben een blauw-wit-rood-hart’
de KNVB en veel selectieteams
spelen in landelijke divisies. ,,Re-
gelmatig wordt jeugd hier gescout
voor de BVO’s. Onder meer Ajax.”
Ook meidenteams
De club heeft namelijk een samen-
werkingsverband met de Amster-
dammers, waarbij de BFC-trainers
soms training krijgen bij Ajax en
de clubs hebben daarnaast nauw
contact of er talenten aanwezig
zijn die in aanmerking komen voor
de profclub. Daarbij maakten on-
der meer Danny Schenkel (verhuis-
de van het eerste van de mannen
naar de Ajax-vrouwen) en Thomas
Niehe (traint nu de jeugd van Ajax)
de overstap als trainer.
,,Maar ik wil benadrukken dat
we tweebenig zijn. We hebben een
sterke jeugdopleiding, veel breed-
teteams en meidenteams maar er is
ook nog altijd de gezelligheid
langs de lijn. We hebben naast
onze vijf seniorenelftallen -vier
mannen- en een vrouwenteam-, op
,,We vieren het nu alsnog, maar
dan in delen”, vertelt voorzitter
Arne Geensen. ,,Voor de jongste
jeugd hebben we een dag met
onder meer springkussens gehad,
de breedteteams en de meiden-
teams hebben een lustrumtoernooi
met BBQ gehad, vrijdagavond was
er voor onze vijfhonderd mannen
en vrouwen van onze zeven tegen
zeven-competitie een avond met
onder meer een sateetje en bier.
Zaterdag komen de Commissaris
van de Koning Arthur van Dijk,
burgemeester Han ter Heegde van
Gooise Meren, KNVB Bondsvoor-
zitter Just Spee en oud-internatio-
nal Sjaak Swart naar de lustrumre-
ceptie. Daar mogen vanwege coro-
na ook helaas maar enkele geno-
digden bij zijn.”
Dat, terwijl de club inmiddels uit
1800 leden bestaat, waarvan maar
liefst 1200 jeugdleden. De club is
een van de vijftig verenigingen die
het Certificaat Regionale Jeugdop-
leiding (RJO) heeft ontvangen van
vrijdagavond dus ook een hele
grote zeven tegen zevencompetitie.
Dan is het hier hartstikke gezel-
lig.”
Vaste gezichten
De 23-jarige Jostein Ohm is een van
de spelers die mee groeide in het
proces.
men. ,,Eigenlijk alle jongens uit de
buurt gaan wel naar BFC. Dat is
toch het dichtst in de buurt. We
zaten hier ook altijd de hele zater-
dag. Eerst zelf spelen en dan bij
het eerste kijken.”
Geen kakclub
De club is de student Leasure and
Eventmanagement is inmiddels
hoofdverantwoordelijk voor de
horeca voor alle horeca-aangele-
genheden van de club. ,,Je ziet hier
veel vaste gezichten, dat is denk ik
ook de kracht van de club. Mensen
die zich al jaren voor BFC inzetten.
Ook veel jongeren. Het zusje en de
vriendin van een van de spelers van
het eerste staan achter de bar. Veel
families, die vaak al levenslang bij
de club zitten. Mijn achterneef
Duco Knevel speelt al zestien jaar
in het eerste.”
Zelf heeft Ohm ook nog training
gegeven aan de jeugd. ,,Van mijn
15de tot mijn 21ste zoiets. We wer-
ken met een vast systeem voor alle
trainers.
Ieder-
een die hier komt voelt zich gelijk
thuis. Je ziet ook dit veel jongens
BFC ook trouw blijven. Bijna het
hele eerste bestaat uit jongens die
hier vanaf jongs af aan spelen. We
hebben nu een hele goede groep
die al heel lang bij elkaar is. Na
twee promoties spelen we nu twee-
de klasse, maar mijn droom is
promoveren naar de eerste. Met
allemaal jongens van de club, dat
zou echt super zijn.”

Historie BFC
BFC werd op 1 mei 1920
opgericht onder de naam DVV,
Door Vrienden Verenigd. Omdat
die naam elders al werd
gebruikt werd deze enkele
jaren later vervangen door BFC,
de Bussumse Football Club.
Een zwart jaar voor de club was
1972, toen een felle brand de
kantine geheel verwoeste.
Onder meer oud-Ajaxdoelman
Jeroen Verhoeven speelde bij
BFC. De bestuurskamer werd
omgedoopt tot Ronald Koeman
Kamer, omdat zijn zoon een
periode bij de club speelde en
de oud-international er
geregeld over de vloer kwam.

,,Ik speelde vanaf mijn zesde bij
BVV in Blaricum, maar ik wilde
hogerop. Ik wist dat BFC een
goede jeugdopleiding had, dus
gespeeld.
,,Ik train al een paar jaar een
keer per week met de Ajax Aca-
demy mee. Ik speel ook bij de
KNVB jeugdselecties en hoop
binnenkort ook in Oranje onder
15 te komen. Mijn droom is om
ooit bij Barcelona te spelen,dus
daar moet ik hard voor trainen.
De trainingen hier zijn van een
heel hoog niveau. Ze denken
heel goed met de spelers mee.
Het is een hele fijne en gezelli-
ge club.”
De 14-jarige Sophie Proost is de
toekomst
thuis.In eerste instantie natuurlijk
altijd met mijn vader mee en later
met anderen.”
Hilverda woonde met zijn ou-
ders in wat toen de ’De Bolsje-
wiek’ werd genoemd, ook wel de
Bussumse Godelindebuurt. „Daar
woon ik nog steeds. Het was toen
een volksbuurt. Dat was BFC ook
in die tijd, een club van arbeiders.
Met AW deelden we een kantine
en dat was een hoedenclub. De
kantine stond toen waar nu een
hele wijk staat, ten zuiden van de
Ceintuurbaan. We speelden in die
begintijd nog in het zwart-wit. Te-
nues hadden we in de oorlogstijd
natuurlijk niet,maar iedereen had
wel een witte blouse en een zwart
broekje. Het duurde ook jaren
voordat we douches hadden.
gen.”
Zijn vader Johannes was een
van de oprichters van de club.
„Daarom was er natuurlijk geen
sprake van dat ik naar SDO zou
gaan. Dat was toen trouwens een
katholieke club, dus dat mengde
sowieso niet. Dat is gelukkig wel
veranderd. Tegenwoordig staan
diejongens’savondsmet elkaarin
de kroeg.”
Zijn eigen voetbalcarrière
moest hij al op zijn zeventiende
staken. „Ik ben maagpatiënt dus
dat ging niet meer.Maar ik ben al-
tijd bij de club betrokken geweest.
Met een groepje deden we het on-
derhoud van de velden, heel lang
onder leiding van wijlen Harry Pui-
jk. We repareerden machines, de
dug-outs, van alles. Ik heb ook ja-
ren het clubblad gedaan. Dat
moest je vroeger zelf nog stenci-
len.” Ook was hij bekend als de
man die jaren de limonade
schonk. „Nu hebben we een vrien-
dengroep van tien zeventigplus-
sers waarmee we alle wedstrijden
bekijken. Heel gezellig.”
„Kijk dat is Kees Boerhout, de bes-
te speler die BFC ooit gehad
heeft”, wijst de 90-jarige Jaap Hil-
verda een van de spelers van het
elftal uit 1931 aan. De foto hangt
groot op een van de muren van de
kantine van BFC.
