Editor's Notes

  • #14 Good morning. My name is Annette Stone and I am the Economic Development Director for the Town of Carrboro. Mayor Lavelle sends her regrets that she was not able to be here with you, so I wanted to share a welcome video she did for the North American Travel Journalist Association.
  • #15  A little history about Carrboro. Carrboro was originally called West End as in “the west side of Franklin Street or Chapel Hill” , then in 1911 the Town was incorporated and renamed to Venable. Later in 1913 the Town was renamed to Carrboro. Local residents would quip that the lived in three different towns and never had to move. Carrboro has always been known as a welcoming town.
  • #16 Carrboro was very much a blue collar working community with a very active railroad depot which still exist
  • #17 today…you all might know “The Station” Crossties BBQ which part of the very vibrant food and music scene in downtown Carrboro.
  • #18 The economy of Carrboro very much was centered around the mill
  • #19 Which you know today as Carr Mill Mall, Carrboro remained a small mill town with just under 2000 people in late 1960 until the early 70’s the town’s population began boom to increase stemming from the growth occurring at UNC-Chapel Hill and area businesses. The population of Carrboro is just over 20,000 people today. And while we are on the subject of Carr Mill Mall!
  • #20 Attached to Carr Mill Mall is a great co-op grocery Weaver Street Market which serves as an awesome community meeting space and is also currently under renovations to even improve that space. Whether it is Sunday morning brunch or Jazz on Thurs evening Weaver Street Lawn is always buzzing with people.
  • #21 Since the 1980’s Carrboro has changed dramatically to become one of the foodiest towns in the state.
  • #22 Carrboro was on the forefront of the local food movement. The Carrboro Farmer’s Market is truly locally grown and nationally known and will be 40 years old this year!
  • #23 Carrboro is known for it’s arts and entertainment with numerous music venues including two that host national music acts – Cat’s Cradle and the Arts Center. The Arts Center is a great resource for the community.
  • #24 The Arts Center also offers classes, performances, and art exhibits all year round. Facilities include a 350-seat theater, classrooms, a dance studio, a 100-seat performance space, and an art gallery. The ArtsCenter is one of largest employer of artists in Orange County, and serves more than 100,000 students and citizens throughout the area annually.
  • #25 Carrboro is only 6.4 square miles and one of the most densely populated town’s in the state. This really helps with our bike walk culture! We are a Silver Level Certified Bike Friendly City and working to be the first Gold standard in the state.
  • #26 Carrboro is a progressive forward thinking community having initiated many first in the state in the dealing with issues from human rights, LGBTQ, environmental protection, climate action planning and renewable energy.
  • #34 Hillsborough has approve A LOT of residential in the last 5 years- expect Town Board not to approve any additional until more commercial infill and redevelopment takes place to serve residents.
