The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

The carbon cycle is a critical component of Earth's environmental system, governing the movement and transformation of carbon through various reservoirs, including the atmosphere, oceans, soil, and living organisms. This complex cycle involves several key processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and carbon sequestration, each contributing to the regulation of carbon levels on the planet.
Human activities, particularly fossil fuel combustion and deforestation, have significantly altered the natural carbon cycle, leading to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and driving climate change. Understanding the intricacies of the carbon cycle is essential for assessing the impacts of these changes and developing effective mitigation strategies.
By studying the carbon cycle, scientists can identify carbon sources and sinks, measure carbon fluxes, and predict future trends. This knowledge is crucial for crafting policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, enhancing carbon storage, and promoting sustainable practices. The carbon cycle's interplay with climate systems, ecosystems, and human activities underscores its importance in maintaining a stable and healthy planet.
In-depth exploration of the carbon cycle reveals the delicate balance required to sustain life and the urgent need to address anthropogenic influences. Through research, education, and policy, we can work towards restoring equilibrium in the carbon cycle and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Introduction –
Thanks for the invite
UK charity primarily aimed at putting the trees back – it takes 2 minutes to chop a tree down and 100 years for it to grow back
Talk 30 mins deforestation
START timer – Gemma (PRIME HER) before CLICKING TEXT
Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses. In short chopping trees down – not something we want to see
About 20-30 football fields’ worth of trees are lost every minute due to deforestation.
UK has 59 million acres at this rate in 3.75 years an area the size of the UK will be lost
Brazil under siege - In 2015, nearly 3,600 square miles of forests — the size of Cyprus
Started to reverse but new government – for 2 decades environmental policy had slowed the rates of deforestation
Newly elected Govt have declared that they will open up the protected lands to stimulate economic growth
So the fight is back on to protect the Amazon rainforest
15 million acres in Indonesia - Indonesia has the highest deforestation rate in the world, losing 15 million acres of forest between 2000 and 2012.
Recent figures are very positive
Global Forest Watch reported a 60% drop in tree cover loss in 2017 which has stabilized again in 2018
Shocking fact that despite the slowdown 80% of the orangutans habitat has been lost
Major Oil Palm companies in Malaysia & Indonesia are moving into Africa and we will start to see large swathes of forest cleared – again for oil palm
Unfortunately it’s a FACT - Half of the world’s tropical forests has already been cleared.
If the current rate of deforestation continues, it will take less than 100 years to destroy all the rainforests on the earth.
This little guy wont have a home and we will potentially only see them in captivity
Many factors but I think many area surprised that its actually Beef production
If you haven’t watched Cowspiracy then I urge you to do so – as the comments resonated with me when the quoted how can you be an environmentalist and still eat Beef – watch the documentary and you will understand why
Old slide from 2005 but still representative of the situation
Cattle Ranching – 70%
Agriculture – 25%
Norwegian Govt pledged 1BN to Indonesia via the UN REDD scheme
Govt earns 20 BN in taxes from palm Oil – no incentive to change and companies move into other continents
Corruption leads to more licenses and prime forest being chopped down
Problem goes a lot deeper than just the corporate giants
Sorry sight
Nobody wants to see scenes like this where this Orangutan is trying to protect its territory
Heart Wrenching to see
Common sight in Asia burning of forests which is releasing all of the stored Co2 back into the atmosphere
Burning – quickest & cheapest option
Slash & Burn - In Thailand its driven by CP group who offer farming subsidies to grow corn for chicken feed for their battery hens – encroachment of the National parks and the tops of hills
Closer to Home what's been called the The bonfire of insanity: Large tracts of USA forest being chopped down
Even if all Britain’s forests were devoted to Drax, they could not keep its furnaces going.
Wood is shipped 3,800 miles and burned in Drax power station DRAX – Carbon accounting loophole
USA not recoding the CO2 emissions from deforestation
UK – not accounting for the release of the stored CO2 back into the atmosphere from the burning of biomass
Huge government subsidies are driving the biomass sector that ultimately the public is funding the subsidies
Drax repeatedly states its using only wood waste but I would ask you all to watch the documentary ‘Burned’ and come to your own conclusion
What are the effects of deforestation?
Forests are vital for food, water and livelihoods — and they affect you, whether you know it or not
Canopy holds water - Prevents run off - Roots stabalise the soil
Remove trees, run off quicker, top soil eroded, silt build up
Next slide
Heavy downpours, run off is quicker
Silt build up
Rivers cant handle the volume of water
Flooding
Prime example was Bangkok flooding – July 2011
Eventually cleared Jan 2012 (^ Months) – 76 provinces declared flood disaster zones $46 BN in economic damages
Didn’t take this picture but was actually living in the capital at that time
Hull flooded – 2007
Wasn’t in UK for there Hull floods I seem to have some connection to them so I would say “Don’t buy a house next door to me”
Another issue as the root systems cant stabalise the soil - Landslides
Countless times in the news
Homes lost and quite often fatalities
As we chop more trees down we are destroying the natural habitat for hundreds of species
Populations are expanding expected to hit 9 Billion people in 2050 - the UK as an example already has a shortfall of an estimated 1M houses per year
The need for housing is increasing so imagine if we started to reduce the number of houses we have available
That’s effectively what we are doing to the wildlife around the planet – destroying their homes
What would we do?
Looking for food, shelter – human/animal conflict
Villages protecting their homes – lack of education around the reasons why the animals are encroaching on their villages
All they know is Elephants can be dangerous and can kill
A tigress, for example, will need a 20 square kilometers (7.7 square miles) territory.
A male tiger requires a larger territory, such as one that covers 40 square miles
Tiger populations are increasing – India a good example with protected reserves but this isn't the same in other Asian countries
25% of cancers fighting organisms are found in the amazon.
120 prescription drugs sold worldwide have been derived directly from plants found in rainforests,
From a health perspective we simply cant afford to lose the forests
Up to 28,000 species are expected to become extinct by the next quarter of the century due to deforestation.
Its my belief that more cures for various illnesses will be discovered in the rainforests – so yet another reason why we should be saving the forests
Trees convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.
A tree can release about 6,000 pounds of breathable oxygen,
Enough for about 4 people per year.
US GDP – 20 trillion - so will the world spend 3.5 times the USA GDP to provide oxygen?
We do need to wake up to some simple facts
More than 20 percent of the world’s breathable oxygen is produced in the Amazon rainforest alone.
In the words of Prince Charles – we are on the verge of turning off the lungs of the planet….
Unmatched biodiversity Tropical forests cover less than 7 percent of Earth’s land mass but are home to about 50 percent of all living things on the planet.
We need to protect that habitat for wildlife as I for one don’t want to see these guys in a cage
What can we do? So many things complex topic
We need more food but we have to reduce our reliance on beef products – I’ve switched to a plant based wholefood diet
Increasing pressure By 2050, the global demand for food could double. A more sustainable alternative is using existing farmland more efficiently, rather than clear more forests to grow food. The 60 million acres of the UK are broadly comprised of 42 million acres of “agricultural” land, 12 million acres of what is called natural waste (mountains, bog, moor and so on) and six million acres of the urban plot (houses, shops, businesses).
Protect mature trees An acre of mature rainforest sequesters more carbon than newly planted or growing trees.
One study found that, on average, an acre of mature rainforest stores 34 tons of carbon dioxide more than an acre of growing rainforest over a 20 year period.
Nature = 30% of the solution Tropical forests are remarkably effective at carbon sequestration — providing up to 30% of the global action needed to stop climate change.
Despite this, of all funding devoted to stopping climate change, nature-based solutions receive only 2% of it.
Conserving forests requires animals Up to 90 percent of trees and plants in tropical forest
Rely on animals to propagate their seeds – higher propagation rate when seeds have been ingested by animals
Essentially the animals are the gardeners of the forest
Human activity has put these animals at risk and reduced their numbers in tropical forests by as much as half.
50 million people - Forests are home to 50 million indigenous people around the world, more than the populations of Tokyo, Mexico City, London, New York City and Cairo combined.
Indigenous peoples protect vital forests Worldwide, forests that are under stewardship of indigenous people contain more than 55 trillion metric tons of carbon
If we lose the rainforest it will put increasing demands on already over populated cities as they move to the city in search of work, food and shelter – much the same as the animals we are forcing out of their homes
Reduce your usage oil palm oil based products or ensure you buy from (RSPO) Round Table Sustainable Palm Oil accredited plantations or products
Hull – WM Jackson Food Group – denounced the use of palm oil in August this year
Increased public pressure like this Greenpeace campaign have raised awareness and multi nationals have adopted a new process.
NESTLE INVESTIGATE
An example of the many and varied products that use Palm Oil even your toothpaste uses palm oil
Nestle are ‘on track’
IKEA sourcing from FSC certified forests – no illegally logged trees in their supply chain
However very difficult to manage
As I stated earlier the largest cause of deforestation is cattle ranching so we have to reduce our meat consumption and meatless Mondays are a start but I feel we need to completely stop buying beef products so really have an impact on the industry and make them listen
Whilst we can work to protect the forests which is of huge importance
We also need to put the trees back. It takes 100 years for a tree to grow and yet only a minute to chop it down
PATT has been working on reforestation for nearly 15 years is responsible for 3 million trees growing in Asia –
Like to thank you for you time today - I would ask that you also support our reforestation efforts by donating to plant a tree
