Social
Progress
Index
The information presented is
embargoed until June 21, 2017
The Social Progress Index is
an aggregate index of social
and environmental indicators
that capture three dimensions
of social progress
It includes data from 128
countries on 50 indicators
• An additional 61 countries
have partial results
It includes 98% of the world
population
Key findings
In the last four years,
social progress has
advanced worldwide,
but not fast or far enough
The average
world score
rose
from 63.19 in
2014 to 64.85
in 2017 – a
2.6% increase

Access to Information and Communications
and Access to Advanced Education have
driven improvement in global social
progress since 2014
Mobile phone subscriptions and Internet users increased
rapidly, but press freedom has declined
2017
Number of globally ranked universities increased
dramatically
2014
Personal Rights, Personal Safety, and Tolerance
and Inclusion are eroding worldwide
Personal Rights
most declined
in political
rights and
freedom of
expression
Nearly the same
number of
countries
declined as
improved in
Personal Safety,
mostly due to
homicides and
violent crime
Tolerance and
Inclusion varies
but too many
countries show
increases in
intolerance for
immigrants,
discrimination
against
minorities
In other areas, progress is slow and
uneven
Health, environment, personal freedom, shelter are standing still
The world is
underperforming and
the SDGs are at stake

Regional trends
Americas
• US & Canada remain consistent
since 2014 with both declining in
Tolerance and Inclusion
• Costa Rica, Chile, and Uruguay
lead Latin American countries on
social progress, with steady but
small advancement over time
• Performance is mixed among the
rest of Latin America, with some
countries improving over time,
many staying nearly the same, and
Nicaragua and El Salvador
trending worse
European Union
• Newer European Union (EU)
member states (EU13) have made
impressive gains on social
progress since 2014, except
Hungary
• But overall EU performance has
been pulled down by setbacks on
Tolerance and Inclusion in many
of these same countries
• Tolerance and Inclusion has
markedly decreased in Hungary,
Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, and
Slovenia
Asia and the Pacific
• Southeast Asia is improving, but
slowly
• Only five countries have improved
by more than a point since 2014:
Cambodia, China, Indonesia,
Japan, and Myanmar
• Australia and New Zealand are in
the top 10 countries globally
• Both countries have seen
consistent performance since
2014 with moderate improvement
in Personal Safety largely driven by
a reduction in violent crime
Africa
• North Africa shows general
improvement
• Sub-Saharan Africa comprises
some of the lowest-performing
countries in the world on social
progress, but Nigeria, Zimbabwe,
Ethiopia are making impressive
headway
• Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and
Mozambique are at a standstill
• Central African Republic, the
lowest performing country in the
world on social progress, is only
getting worse

The issues highlighted
in the Social Progress
Index are solvable, and
business is part of the
solution
“Social entrepreneurs find
their purpose in advancing
social progress”
“Purpose-led firms attract
and retain better future
leaders”
Coca-Cola and Natura used the framework
to identify issues within their Amazon-
based supply chain, and reinforced the
local infrastructure to provide fresh water
to an isolated community
Forestry company Masisa is looking beyond
job creation as a measure of success and
using the Social Progress Index to explore
how well Chilean communities are faring as
a result of their investments and workforce
engagement
Cargill is now measuring how their
local supply chain relationships
with co-ops are affecting social
progress in Central American
communities
Several financial institutions and impact
investment groups have begun applying
the Social Progress Index to understand
risk and drive capital towards social
needs

Moving from index to
action to impact
Everyone can take action and have
impact:
• Use the results to convene
government officials, business,
nonprofits, citizens and others to

innovation
Use the results in
