Mingled Visions: Images from The North American
Indian Collection Exhibition by Edward S. Curtis
Forty photogravures by Edward S. Curtis, American, 1868-1952,
and objects from the Marshall M. Fredericks Archives were
exhibited at the Museum Feb. 3-May 21.
February Fat Tuesday
The museum’s Resident Student Organization put on its
second annual Fat Tuesday donut day. Over 200 FREE
donuts were served.
February Viva Jazz
Viva Jazz brought music and
music lovers to the Museum’s first
“Friday Night Jazz” concert. The
melodic sounds of Lauren Rongo,
flutist, Arlene Pritchard McDaniel,
pianist, and Terry Newman,
bassist were enjoyed by an
appreciative audience.
March Sip N Swirl
The Museum’s first Sip N Swirl was held on
March 31. Thirty creative people attended the
event, each painting a one-of-a-kind Spirit of
Detroit. The class was taught by Tara Welch,
Director of Studio 23 in Bay City.
April Anne Makepeace Lecture
Anne Makepeace, nationally renowned film maker, held a
screening of her “Coming to Light: Edward S. Curtis and the
North American Indians” documentary in the Malcolm Field
Theatre.
April The Life and Legacy of Marshall M.
Fredericks
A grant from the Alden and Vada
Dow Family Foundations made it
possible for the Museum to make a
memorable 15 minute film of
Marshall Fredericks’s life and
legacy.

April International Sculpture Day
About 60 people participated in International Sculpture
Day (ISD) at the museum. This is the second year the
museum was a part of this world wide event. The museum
will participate in ISD again on April 29, 2018.
May Kids Discover Art Day
The Museum’s annual and popular tour blitz program,
Kids Discover Art Day, was held on May 9. More than
370 students, teachers and chaperones enjoyed a free
museum tour, art activity and donuts.
May Creative Cardinals
SVSU faculty and staff were
invited to submit one or more
works of art, including music, to
the third Creative Cardinals
exhibition at the Museum.

June Friday Night Jazz with Brush Street
The “Friday Night Jazz” at the
Museum series continued June 2
with Brush Street and vocalist Julie
Mulady performing in the galleries.
Mike Brush, piano, and Terry
Newman, bass, along with long-time
accompanying vocalist Mulady,
played to many fans who attended
the concert.
June Adult Art Camp
Twelve students attended adult art camp for five days with five artists and created five
artworks. These talented folks made a wire and beaded bottle with Valeri Trombley; a
Millifori polymer clay vessel with Tamar Aldrich; felting objects with Sherri Archer; a collage
with Geoffe Haney; and a “kitchen lithography” print with Andrea Ondish.

Eight Voices
This exhibition of carved and painted wood (alebrijes) and ceramic sculptures by
indigenous artists of Oaxaca, Mexico was a great success.

Oaxacan artist Mario Castellanos Gonzalez showed summer art camp students how he
creates his carved animals. Each student received a small carved wood animal to paint in
the style of Oaxacan folk art.

an OLLI class and local museum classes.
June Laurie Tennent Botanicals
Laurie Tennent’s Botanicals were eye catching in the Jo Anne and Donald Petersen
Sculpture Garden. Nine of Tennent’s oversize photographs were on display through mid-
October.
June/July Summer Art Camp
In its 10th year, fifty students ages 8-18 participated in
summer art camp classes at the museum. SVSU art
education majors Michelle Galeener and Adam
Sharnas designed, prepared and taught the five
weeks of classes. Scholarship sponsors were Tom and
Carol George, Kelly and Jim Fabiano, Ernie Paulick,
Johnny Burke Children’s Foundation, and the Eric J.
Blair Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Summer art

October Floating World, Karen LaMonte
October Floating World, Karen LaMonte
Gallery Talk
Karen LaMonte traveled from her home in the
Czech Republic for the October 6th opening of
her Floating World exhibition. During LaMonte’s
gallery talk, she spoke about the process of
casting glass, living in the Czech Republic, and
the provenance of the large wooden boxes
with calligraphic Japanese symbols she makes
for the presentation of each kimono and which
are part of the exhibition. Inspired by the
lexicon of the kimono, the sculptures in the
exhibition are made of rusted iron, bronze,
ceramic and cast glass.
October Saints, Sinners and Safari
Many sponsors, 300 guests, and 50 generous artists who
donated a work of art for the auction, contributed to the goal
of netting over $70,000 for the museum’s exhibition and
educational programs.

November OLLI, Art Appreciation Series:
The Media
This November, OLLI members learned about the different media visual artists use:
drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design,
mixed media and alternative media and processes.

We raised $2,075 towards the construction of a new loading bay, and shipping, receiving
and storage area for our temporary exhibitions.

The Museum is now 100% LED illuminated. Stop by and
see the Museum in a whole new light. The sculptures look
amazing!
