Module 10 Human Resource and Intercultural Management: Frankfurt, Germany
(Defense of submitted Thesis at conclusion of module)
The above ten modules were undertaken between September 2011 and May 2013 – each module was of 10
days duration and at each location, in addition to the core curriculum, dedicated on-site visits were
organized to study both public/private healthcare delivery systems of the host country.
The two e-based modules focused on:
- Submitting a viable business plan – Module 5
- A study of integrated management using the Markstrat concept – Module 8
Submission and successful defense of a thesis was mandatory to graduation from the MBA program.
My thesis topic was: An Analysis of the Healthcare System in Singapore: How has it succeeded in
delivering cost effective quality?
A transcript of the course evaluation can be made available, on request, from the Frankfurt School of
Finance and Management.
For one who has been in medical practice for over 30 years, the question does then need to be asked that
what was now the need for a MBA? As an ‘insider’ I can vouch for the fact that physicians in general tend
often to be a law unto themselves! They can become victims of their own rituals and not accept criticism
easily-and be very reluctant to accept change. The change one talks about here is not the medical care per
se (for they are the specialists in their fields), but in how it is delivered. How can one make its delivery
more efficient and at the same time introduce more fiscal accountability? How can ‘change management’
be made more acceptable? How can we not just do the maximum good-but also be able to do it for the
maximum number of patients?
It is a fact that, by and large, good doctors do not necessarily make good administrators-but at the same
time seemingly good ‘administrators’ find it difficult to be good “hospital administrators”. As a result one
ends up with the leader being either a doctor who does not understand administration or an administrator
who does not understand medicine! Neither is a good option. Having trained and worked in four
continents, and now matured in my surgical career, I felt it was then about time for me to take the initiative
and master these ‘other skill sets’ – and so be able to better contribute to my profession.
I specifically chose the Frankfurt School both because of the strength of its healthcare program and the
opportunity to truly experience the international variations in the way medical care is delivered across the
world. Whilst it is true that there is no perfect system of caring, there is a lot to be learnt from the practice
of others that one can try to incorporate when planning care across any society.
General Management Program (GMP): Harvard Business School
Conducted from Jan through May, 2010 (GMP-8), the program was divided into 5 modules:
Module 1:
Using on-line teaching tools this introductory off-campus module (4 weeks) focused on building
foundational skills in financial management, strategy and accounting.
Module 2:
This involved on-campus education at HBS (4 weeks) using case studies and collaborative learning
through group discussions. The emphasis was on acquiring analytical skills to select the right options (in a
rapidly changing world) and their successful policy implementation.
Module 3:
Was a continuation of off-campus learning (5 weeks) with an analysis of one’s work place scenario and
how the general management principles learned could be applied to enhance value.
Module 4:
On campus at HBS (3 weeks), this module focused on the individual’s leadership abilities and identifying
scope for improvements-for the candidate to be a more effective and action oriented manager.
Module 5:
Essentially was a process of continuous learning that follows from being a GMP (and a HBS) alumni.
The GMP executive program at HBS was in many ways a transformational program-and for me, coming
from a medical background (as a health care provider) it gave me the opportunity to interact both with a
distinguished faculty as well as colleagues from a variety of disciplines other than health care. The on-site
modules at HBS (compulsorily resident) separated the cohort into smaller ‘living groups’ where the
intellectual interaction would continue after hours, engaged in addressing the work sheets for the day. The
emphasis was on how to be a better manager-and for me, how to manage health care better!
Indeed, in my case this foray was essential for me to understand the “principles of management” – it was
the catalyst that then led me to enroll for the formal MBA program in my chosen field of healthcare at the
Frankfurt School.
MEDICAL EXPERIENCE
Current Tenure: March 2004 to date
Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon & Head Section of Orthopedic Oncology
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC)
KFSH is the designated tertiary care health facility for Saudi Arabia – with a mandate to deal with a variety
of complex medical issues that cannot be adequately addressed elsewhere in the region. The orthopedic
department includes an orthopedic oncology service as part of a comprehensive cancer center.
As surgical oncologists we work in partnership with our colleagues in medical/radiation oncology in
dealing with musculoskeletal sarcomas performing over 250 limb salvage procedures per year. The
inevitable limb ablative surgery for advanced local disease and the management of pathological fractures
are also our brief.
The section of orthopedic oncology comprises:
- Three full time, North American fellowship trained consultants
- One assistant consultant physician
- Two orthopedic oncology fellows
- Rotating residents from the Saudi Orthopedic Board Program
Preceding Tenures: Dated
Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Feb 2002-2004
SGH is the largest tertiary healthcare provider in Singapore with a full complement of subspecialty faculties
offering the patient access to total medical care. I shared the oncology cover with a colleague and was also
on the trauma service.
Oncology Fellowship, MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC), Houston, 2000-2001
MDACC is a designated National Cancer Center by the National Institute of Health and a world leader in
cancer care. I undertook the Fellowship program to formalize/accredit my training in this relatively new
orthopedic sub-specialty.
Assistant Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, King Faisal Specialist Hospital, 1992-2000
Given my UK training in general orthopedics, I then moved to this tertiary care center and embarked on a
career in orthopedic oncology working with Paul Moreau MD and Derek Younge MD.
Edinburgh Orthopedic Rotation, Scotland, 1988-1992, FRCS Orth (Ed) 1990
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh was the Institute that conferred both the general and
specialty fellowships in orthopedic surgery. My mentor was Dr WA Souter who was the head of the
arthritis unit at the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopedic Hospital in Edinburgh.
Post Fellowship Registrar, UK, 1984-88
Pre-Fellowship UK Training Rotation, 1982-84, FRCS Ed (1984)
Orthopedic Training Program, India, 1976-82, MS Orth (1979)
Faculty of Medicine, University of Delhi, India
Medical Intern, 1976
Medical School, 1970-1975, Armed Forces Medical College, Poona, India
“MANAGEMENT “EXPERIENCE”
I make no apologies for my medical background-it is the subject I am passionately interested in and which I
have pursued to completion. In the medical field, it is the specialty of orthopedic surgery that I have
specialized in-perhaps unsurprising considering I am a 3rd
generation surgeon! Evidently the atmosphere I
grew up in shaped my thinking-and in orthopedics I chose to sub-specialize in the field of orthopedic
oncology.
As a physician in general and as a surgeon in particular one needs to be able to work in a team. Surgical
outcomes are defined not just by the skill of the surgeon but by the ability of all involved care providers-
medical colleagues, nurses, therapists and allied health care personnel. There is a range of personalities
across a spectrum of heath care professions that need to be managed and the surgeon is the point person to
whom others look to for leadership. The patient too needs to have ‘faith’ – this indeed is a critical part of
the equation. One has to be able to motivate all concerned to be able to optimize outcomes. Without
doubt, the surgeon has to demonstrate not just professional but also management and interactive ‘soft’
skills to be a successful leader of his team. These are leadership qualities that are acquired over time in the
profession-perhaps not equally by all (for we are all different)-but that is what then differentiates the best
from the rest.
In my capacity as the Head of the section of orthopedic oncology at our hospital I work with two other
consultant colleagues and am directly responsible for our training program. The latter includes four
residents on rotational training as well as up to two full time musculoskeletal oncology fellows. In addition
to our personal/professional interactions within our group we also need to liaise with our colleagues across
disciplines such as medical oncology, radiation oncology and pathology. The right balance needs to be
always maintained between the sometimes conflicting demands of senior colleagues and the aspirations of
our junior surgical colleagues in training. I take pride in the fact that we are a harmonious section and the
residents value their time spent with us (evident in the demand for and the consistently high rating of this
rotation).
My responsibility is to report to the Chairman of the orthopedic division, who in turn is then directly
accountable to the senior administrative management headed by the CEO of the hospital. I have to justify
our needs (in terms of beds, staffing and equipment) and be held accountable for outcomes. The latter are
measured in terms of bed occupancy rate, length of stay, surgical results, evaluation of
morbidities/mortalities and patient satisfaction surveys.
The MBA has added value to the above experience. Foremost it has taught me fiscal responsibility that one
does not learn at medical school! Beyond that one has learned analytical skills, strategy formulation and
how to position one’s self to succeed in an uncertain world. Human resource management which one
inevitably practices in my given environment has been formally studied as a science. How countries have
adopted differing ways to deliver health care and their pros and cons have been evaluated. Finally, after
formulation, the successful marketing of any project has been emphasized. I look forward to the
opportunity of using this synergy of medical/managerial skills to take a lead in promoting a more seamless
and efficient health care delivery system.

The two e-based modules focused on: - Submitting a viable business plan – Module 5 - A study of integrated management using the Markstrat concept – Module 8 Submission and successful defense of a thesis was mandatory to graduation from the MBA program. My thesis topic was: An Analysis of the Healthcare System in Singapore: How has it succeeded in delivering cost effective quality? A transcript of the course evaluation can be made available, on request, from the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. For one who has been in medical practice for over 30 years, the question does then need to be asked that what was now the need for a MBA? As an ‘insider’ I can vouch for the fact that physicians in general tend often to be a law unto themselves! They can become victims of their own rituals and not accept criticism easily-and be very reluctant to accept change. The change one talks about here is not the medical care per se (for they are the specialists in their fields), but in how it is delivered. How can one make its delivery more efficient and at the same time introduce more fiscal accountability? How can ‘change management’ be made more acceptable? How can we not just do the maximum good-but also be able to do it for the maximum number of patients? It is a fact that, by and large, good doctors do not necessarily make good administrators-but at the same time seemingly good ‘administrators’ find it difficult to be good “hospital administrators”. As a result one ends up with the leader being either a doctor who does not understand administration or an administrator who does not understand medicine! Neither is a good option. Having trained and worked in four continents, and now matured in my surgical career, I felt it was then about time for me to take the initiative and master these ‘other skill sets’ – and so be able to better contribute to my profession. I specifically chose the Frankfurt School both because of the strength of its healthcare program and the opportunity to truly experience the international variations in the way medical care is delivered across the world. Whilst it is true that there is no perfect system of caring, there is a lot to be learnt from the practice of others that one can try to incorporate when planning care across any society.
  • 5. General Management Program (GMP): Harvard Business School Conducted from Jan through May, 2010 (GMP-8), the program was divided into 5 modules: Module 1: Using on-line teaching tools this introductory off-campus module (4 weeks) focused on building foundational skills in financial management, strategy and accounting. Module 2: This involved on-campus education at HBS (4 weeks) using case studies and collaborative learning through group discussions. The emphasis was on acquiring analytical skills to select the right options (in a rapidly changing world) and their successful policy implementation. Module 3: Was a continuation of off-campus learning (5 weeks) with an analysis of one’s work place scenario and how the general management principles learned could be applied to enhance value. Module 4: On campus at HBS (3 weeks), this module focused on the individual’s leadership abilities and identifying scope for improvements-for the candidate to be a more effective and action oriented manager. Module 5: Essentially was a process of continuous learning that follows from being a GMP (and a HBS) alumni. The GMP executive program at HBS was in many ways a transformational program-and for me, coming from a medical background (as a health care provider) it gave me the opportunity to interact both with a distinguished faculty as well as colleagues from a variety of disciplines other than health care. The on-site modules at HBS (compulsorily resident) separated the cohort into smaller ‘living groups’ where the intellectual interaction would continue after hours, engaged in addressing the work sheets for the day. The emphasis was on how to be a better manager-and for me, how to manage health care better! Indeed, in my case this foray was essential for me to understand the “principles of management” – it was the catalyst that then led me to enroll for the formal MBA program in my chosen field of healthcare at the Frankfurt School. MEDICAL EXPERIENCE Current Tenure: March 2004 to date Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon & Head Section of Orthopedic Oncology King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) KFSH is the designated tertiary care health facility for Saudi Arabia – with a mandate to deal with a variety of complex medical issues that cannot be adequately addressed elsewhere in the region. The orthopedic department includes an orthopedic oncology service as part of a comprehensive cancer center. As surgical oncologists we work in partnership with our colleagues in medical/radiation oncology in dealing with musculoskeletal sarcomas performing over 250 limb salvage procedures per year. The inevitable limb ablative surgery for advanced local disease and the management of pathological fractures are also our brief.
  • 6. The section of orthopedic oncology comprises: - Three full time, North American fellowship trained consultants - One assistant consultant physician - Two orthopedic oncology fellows - Rotating residents from the Saudi Orthopedic Board Program Preceding Tenures: Dated Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Feb 2002-2004 SGH is the largest tertiary healthcare provider in Singapore with a full complement of subspecialty faculties offering the patient access to total medical care. I shared the oncology cover with a colleague and was also on the trauma service. Oncology Fellowship, MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC), Houston, 2000-2001 MDACC is a designated National Cancer Center by the National Institute of Health and a world leader in cancer care. I undertook the Fellowship program to formalize/accredit my training in this relatively new orthopedic sub-specialty. Assistant Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, King Faisal Specialist Hospital, 1992-2000 Given my UK training in general orthopedics, I then moved to this tertiary care center and embarked on a career in orthopedic oncology working with Paul Moreau MD and Derek Younge MD. Edinburgh Orthopedic Rotation, Scotland, 1988-1992, FRCS Orth (Ed) 1990 The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh was the Institute that conferred both the general and specialty fellowships in orthopedic surgery. My mentor was Dr WA Souter who was the head of the arthritis unit at the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopedic Hospital in Edinburgh. Post Fellowship Registrar, UK, 1984-88 Pre-Fellowship UK Training Rotation, 1982-84, FRCS Ed (1984) Orthopedic Training Program, India, 1976-82, MS Orth (1979) Faculty of Medicine, University of Delhi, India Medical Intern, 1976 Medical School, 1970-1975, Armed Forces Medical College, Poona, India “MANAGEMENT “EXPERIENCE” I make no apologies for my medical background-it is the subject I am passionately interested in and which I have pursued to completion. In the medical field, it is the specialty of orthopedic surgery that I have specialized in-perhaps unsurprising considering I am a 3rd generation surgeon! Evidently the atmosphere I grew up in shaped my thinking-and in orthopedics I chose to sub-specialize in the field of orthopedic oncology. As a physician in general and as a surgeon in particular one needs to be able to work in a team. Surgical outcomes are defined not just by the skill of the surgeon but by the ability of all involved care providers- medical colleagues, nurses, therapists and allied health care personnel. There is a range of personalities across a spectrum of heath care professions that need to be managed and the surgeon is the point person to whom others look to for leadership. The patient too needs to have ‘faith’ – this indeed is a critical part of
  • 7. the equation. One has to be able to motivate all concerned to be able to optimize outcomes. Without doubt, the surgeon has to demonstrate not just professional but also management and interactive ‘soft’ skills to be a successful leader of his team. These are leadership qualities that are acquired over time in the profession-perhaps not equally by all (for we are all different)-but that is what then differentiates the best from the rest. In my capacity as the Head of the section of orthopedic oncology at our hospital I work with two other consultant colleagues and am directly responsible for our training program. The latter includes four residents on rotational training as well as up to two full time musculoskeletal oncology fellows. In addition to our personal/professional interactions within our group we also need to liaise with our colleagues across disciplines such as medical oncology, radiation oncology and pathology. The right balance needs to be always maintained between the sometimes conflicting demands of senior colleagues and the aspirations of our junior surgical colleagues in training. I take pride in the fact that we are a harmonious section and the residents value their time spent with us (evident in the demand for and the consistently high rating of this rotation). My responsibility is to report to the Chairman of the orthopedic division, who in turn is then directly accountable to the senior administrative management headed by the CEO of the hospital. I have to justify our needs (in terms of beds, staffing and equipment) and be held accountable for outcomes. The latter are measured in terms of bed occupancy rate, length of stay, surgical results, evaluation of morbidities/mortalities and patient satisfaction surveys. The MBA has added value to the above experience. Foremost it has taught me fiscal responsibility that one does not learn at medical school! Beyond that one has learned analytical skills, strategy formulation and how to position one’s self to succeed in an uncertain world. Human resource management which one inevitably practices in my given environment has been formally studied as a science. How countries have adopted differing ways to deliver health care and their pros and cons have been evaluated. Finally, after formulation, the successful marketing of any project has been emphasized. I look forward to the opportunity of using this synergy of medical/managerial skills to take a lead in promoting a more seamless and efficient health care delivery system.
