Digital Shift in Insurance: How is the Industry Responding with the Influx of...DataWorks Summit
The digital connected world is having an impact on the technology environments that insurers must create to thrive in the new era of computing. The nature of customer interactions, business processes from product, risk and claims management are continuously changing. During this session we will review recent research and insights from insurance companies in the life, general and reinsurance markets and discuss the implications for insurers as the industry considers implications from core systems, predictive and preventive analytics and improvements to customer experiences.
Millions of dollars are being spent annually by the insurance industry in InsurTech investments from risk listening, customer interactions (chatbots, SMS messaging, smart interactive conversations), to methods of evaluating claims (digital capture at notice of incident, dashcams, connected homes/vehicles).
These are all new types of data which the industry hasn't previously had to manage and govern.
Additionally, at the heart of this is how to create new business opportunities from data. We will also have an interactive conversation on discussing and exploring insurance implications of the new computing environment from AI, Big Data and IoT (Edge computing).

Businesses across the world are rapidly leveraging the Internet-of-Things (#IoT) to create new products and services that are opening up new business opportunities and creating new business models.
The resulting transformation is ushering in a new era of how companies run their operations and engage with customers. However, tapping into the IoT is only part of the story [6].
For companies to realize the full potential of IoT enablement, they need to combine IoT with rapidly-advancing Artificial Intelligence (#AI) technologies, which enable ‘smart machines’ to simulate intelligent behavior and make well-informed decisions with little or no human intervention [6].

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) has suffered an alleged data breach after a notorious threat actor claimed to have exfiltrated data from its systems. Infamous data leaker IntelBroker posted on the even more infamous BreachForums hacking forum, saying that Europol suffered a data breach this month.
The alleged breach affected Europol agencies CCSE, EC3, Europol Platform for Experts, Law Enforcement Forum, and SIRIUS. Infiltration of these entities can disrupt ongoing investigations and compromise sensitive intelligence shared among international law enforcement agencies.
However, this is neither the first nor the last activity of IntekBroker. We have compiled for you what happened in the last few days. First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

“Chris actively used his 5Star for six days last
week and could contact help if needed during
that time. He spent time at the farmer’s market,
his daughter’s home and the coffee shop. He
did a great job of charging the device regularly,
never letting the battery power fall to a low
level.”
“Mary Clare actively used her 5Star for three
days last week and could reach an operator if
needed during that time. However, she didn't
actively use her device for four full days. She
may need a reminder that it is important to
carry her device at all times, guaranteeing that
support is available when needed.”
“Edward made four total calls to GreatCall last
week, including an important one to notify 911.”

discrimination, building systems that support fairness
and accountability, and developing strong data ethics
frameworks
Encourage market participants to design the best
algorithmic systems, including transparency and
accountability mechanisms such as the ability for
subjects to correct inaccurate data and appeal
algorithmic-based decisions.
Promote academic research and industry development
of algorithmic auditing and external testing of big data
systems to ensure that people are being treated fairly.
Broaden participation in computer science and data
science, including opportunities to improve basic
fluencies and capabilities of all Americans.
Consider the roles of the government and private sector
in setting the rules of the road for how data is used.

reasonably limit their collection and retention of
PII. These practices, known as data minimization, can
help mitigate privacy-related risks. The FTC
recommended that:
◦ IoT companies should examine their data practices and business
needs and develop policies and practices that impose reasonable
limits on the collection and retention of PII; and
◦ to the extent there is a need to collect and store PII, IoT
companies should consider whether they can do so while
maintaining the PII in a de-identified form.

could allow you to tailor your life according to what’s
happening to your body throughout the day. It could allow
nutritionists to carefully build meal plans for clients, or for
doctors to come up with more efficient medical treatments.”
