Maarten Van Horenbeeck, a lead on Fastly’s security team, and experienced incident commanders Lisa Phillips and Tom Daly explore how Incident Command was conceived and the protocols that were developed within Fastly to make it work. The three share a number of war stories that illustrate how Incident Command contributes to protecting Fastly, its customers, and the many end users relying on the service. Iowa 4-H offers First Lego League (FLL) robotics programs for youth ages 9-14. FLL teams of 10 members meet weekly to program a Lego robot to complete tasks and identify a community project. They participate in regional competitions in December. The competitions involve robot performance, a project presentation, teamwork interviews, and technical interviews. 4-H and FLL align in developing youth leadership, citizenship, and communication skills. Experiential learning through hands-on activities and reflection is emphasized.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

- 3. Creating the digital building map: ✘Start with the paper floor plan. Do a walk through of the building to check the accuracy of the floor plans. Add any necessary components such as doors, fire extinguishers, security cameras, fire alarms, and tornado shelters. ✘Add details such as room numbers, room use, number of students, and teacher name. ✘Add emergency point layer. This shows the locations of all fire extinguishers, tornado shelters, and security cameras. ✘Add layer for utilities shut-off.

Safety in Modern Times: ✘There have been at least 171 school shootings in the United States since 2013. ✘Improved preparedness for emergency personnel increases the chances for successful rescues. ✘Digital maps can be easily changed according to evolving school floor plans to keep emergency personnel up to date unlike the previously used paper maps that were hard to find and inaccurate.
