Mass Comm Week
Texas State Presents the 2015 Mass Comm Week
By Tyler Mahan
National Geographic managing editor David Brindley, New York Times best-selling author
Domingo Martinez and alumna Bharati Naik, a field producer for CNN International in London,
are among many outstanding speakers already scheduled to make presentations at the 2015 Mass
Comm Week, Oct. 19-23.
Martinez, who lives in Seattle, Wash., has written recently critically acclaimed books, “My Heart
Is a Drunken Compass” and “The Boy Kings of Texas,” which has been optioned by HBO for an
original series. Among other speakers are Jeffrey Epstein, director of the Chicago Portfolio
School; and Chris Perez of Austin, CEO of Left/Right Media, publishers of Citygram Austin.
Ms. Naik received her master’s degree at Texas State’s School of Journalism and Mass
Communication in 2005. She has reported on the civil war in Sri Lanka and terrorist attacks in
India. Her current assignments include global and women’s issues. She joined CNN as in intern
during the fall of 2005.
Such experiences have led Mass Comm Week organizers to choose “Kick Off Your Career” as
the theme for this year’s four-day conference.
“This year’s stellar lineup, like every one, brings to Texas State University leaders in their
respective fields to discuss industry issues and evolving challenges,” said Ms. Elizabeth Clark,
senior lecturer and faculty chair of Mass Comm Week.”
Each year, Mass Comm Week attracts thousands of students to events on campus and thousands
more who tune into live-streamed events from throughout the country and around the world. The
audience is expanded through the active and immediate participation on various social media
platforms.
The event also gives about 100 high school students from Laredo an opportunity to attend
programs and visit the University as part of the D.D. Hachar Charitable Trust Fund.
Events are free and open to the public. For current information about Mass Comm Week, visit
