THE EXECUTIVE
PHD PROGRAM
The Executive PhD Program developed by Antwerp Management School is a high-level support
Program for Executives and C-level managers with the strong ambition to bring state-of-the-art
knowledge and excellent research skills into the workplace and into society.
The Executive PhD Program combines rigorous academic research and teaching with relevant real-
world business impact, thus contributing to both academia and business.

A LITTLE MORE INTO DETAIL
PHD-CIRCLE
The Executive PhD Program supports all elements of
Antwerp Management School’s Strategy model and
Research objectives as stated in the different Competence
Centers. It is designed to ensure:
Participants become part of a PhD-circle (= a cohort of PhD-students starting their Executive PhD Program at the same time). The
idea behind these PhD-circles is that although the individual PhD research proposals will differ (different angle, different topic,
different industry, different background, etc.); the process is very similar (a number of specific ‘milestones’ are part of any PhD:
formulating a research question, choice of methods, decisions on theory and analysis, formulation of conclusions, etc.).
These milestones will be shared and discussed within the circle. As such a PhD-circle combines rigorous supervision by an
experienced PhD-supervisor with relevant inter-vision with the other PhD-students who learn by reading and discussing each
other’s work.
Furthermore, the support provided by a PhD-circle will be extremely useful for adapting to the academic world: academic writing,
working on conference papers, presenting academic research and so on.
This collaborative learning approach spurs teamwork and leadership skills.
Over a period of 4 years, successful PhD candidates will gain
competencies crucial for further intensifying their career
span successfully, both in Academia and Industry. In this
respect, they will:
The Program is aimed at senior executives with over
10 years of relevant management experience, working in
organizations that typically operate on an international
level. A significant proportion holds Board-level or CEO
positions.
The advancement of practice-based knowledge through
original research, predominantly – but not exclusively – in
the areas of the Antwerp Management School Competence
Centers;
Acquire the latest theoretical and practical knowledge
in their chosen management field and learn the skills of
advancing knowledge through methodologically-robust,
practice-based research methods;
Demonstrate the ability to develop original contributions
to existing knowledge;
Learn the skills needed to transfer knowledge in both
academic and business environments, in oral and written
form.
A steady flow of academic research output and publications
with a built-in handicap for case-based research;
The positioning of Antwerp Management School as a

STRUCTURE OF THE ANTWERP MANAGEMENT
SCHOOL EXECUTIVE PHD PROGRAM
The Executive PhD is divided into 2 general stages. Stage 1 provides participants with all the necessary research
skills that are required to embark on a doctoral research project and to be able to write a PhD research proposal.
Stage 2 focuses on supervised research, learning advanced teaching and lecturing skills, and culminates in the
defense of a doctoral dissertation.
With the acceptance of their PhD research proposal
and the appointment of a PhD supervisor, participants
progress to Stage 2. Over a period of 24-30 months,
participants proceed with their research, write and
eventually defend a doctoral dissertation. During
this stage, participants are expected to grow their
competenciesinpresenting,discussingandpublishing
their research.
Participants are expected to attend doctoral Research
Colloquia and seminars on academic publishing,
writing teaching cases and facilitate case study
discussions in academic and business environments.
In Stage 2 participants are managed through a PhD-
circle, which is based on topical themes.
Towards the latter stages of their research,
participants are offered membership of an alumni
lecturing network (PETRA Network), which will
help them find and organize occasional and part-time
academic lecturing and research engagements after
the completion of their Executive PhD Program.
The Program contains both compulsory and elective
elements, which should lead the participant to a PhD
within 4 years.
Stage 1 is expected to last 16-18 months. Participants
acquire in-depth knowledge about quantitative
and qualitative management research methods.
Considerable attention will also be devoted to
literature search and to the skills needed to transfer
knowledge. They gain broad insights into their
specialization through membership and collaboration
within the Antwerp Management School Competence
Centers. Every intake is developed according to
a ´cohort´ principle with a network of Faculty
supervising, guiding and advising the entire intake.
Successful completion of all modules and assignments
provides all the elements required for an academically
robust PhD research proposal.

ADMISSION CRITERIA & PRICING
Antwerp Management School only admits participants to the Executive PhD Program with the intrinsic motivation and
willingness to contribute to academic research and to become the next generation business leaders. Candidates must
hold an MBA or Master’s degree from an accredited academic institution and must have at least ten years of professional
experience in the field of management. The Program is taught in English thus an excellent knowledge of oral and written
English is required.
Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
