Documenting Ferguson: Building a community digital repositoryChris Freeland
The August 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, along with other recent police-involved shootings around the country have inspired demonstrations, conversation, debate and calls for systemic change in our society. Soon after Brown’s shooting, Washington University Libraries and other St. Louis cultural heritage institutions established a repository to document events in or inspired by Ferguson. Appropriately named Documenting Ferguson, this community-sourced open repository now has more than 1,500 files of digital photographs, video recordings and other media contributed from all over the country. These are viewable online at http://digital.wustl.edu/ferguson. Video of this talk available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6whGNsesYA.

Cultural Heritage Information DashboardsRichard Urban
Large-scale aggregations of digital collections from libraries, archives and museums offer users unprecedented access to cultural heritage materials. But they also have failed to incorporate important contextual information that allows users to develop an understanding of the significant features of purpose-built collections. This paper explores the development of information dashboard prototypes that provide users a high-level overview of cultural heritage collections. Two case studies using rapid-prototyping methodologies are presented.

Working with Wikipedia: Leveraging the Online Encyclopedia to Serve Your Patr...Don Boozer
For almost fourteen years, Wikipedia has stirred strong emotions among librarians and educators - both pro and con. Regardless of any controversy students, patrons, and - yes - librarians are using Wikipedia, and it remains steadfastly in the top ten most-visited sites on the Internet. If patrons are going to be using Wikipedia, it is in librarians' interest to understand both its strengths and weaknesses and be able to communicate these to local patrons, students, and educators. This presentation will address these concerns and also look at how librarians can use the online encyclopedia to share their expertise and highlight their local resources. Presented at the Ohio Library Council

f you offer a service on the web, odds are that someone will abuse it. Be it an API, a SaaS, a PaaS, or even a static website, someone somewhere will try to figure out a way to use it to their own needs. In this talk we'll compare measures that are effective against static attackers and how to battle a dynamic attacker who adapts to your counter-measures.

COMPARISON
Nature conducted a peer review of 42 entries from Wikipedia and the
Encyclopedia Britannica. The results:
Only eight serious errors, such as misinterpretations of important
concepts, were detected in the pairs of articles reviewed, four from
each encyclopaedia. But reviewers also found many factual errors,
omissions or misleading statements: 162 and 123 in Wikipedia and
Britannica, respectively.
