The Prospectus & Annotated Bibliography
Due Tuesday, October 13, 2015 in the Drop Box, by the end of the class, 7:30 PM EST
A prospectus is a “proposal” to us regarding your research interest involving an environmental
ethics or land management issue that you will feature your upcoming argumentative research
essay. Writing such a proposal allows us to provide specific feedback to you concerning your
research topic and approach.
The Prospectus will present your research topic, a clear, concise and well-defined thesis statement
and explain the research sources and methods that you are planning to use for this investigation.
To ascertain that you are on track with the prospectus, please complete the following:
1. Identify an issue involving an environmental ethics or land management topic of interest that
you hold a position. You may be a strong supporter of a specific environmental ethic for the
good of mankind, such as clean water for all living things. Conversely, you may be against a
world polluting source causing harm to the environment and people. There are many options
available! Issues involving fair treatment of indigenous peoples, chemical exposures causing
harm to people and/or the environment are a few examples.
2. Determine your position concerning this Environmental Ethics topic, and present a very
specific and succinct thesis statement.
3. Create an outline below your thesis statement. Each sub-category will be a segment of your
research paper and all segments will be needed to support your thesis.
4. Build upon your position concerning your chosen environmental Ethics/Land Management
issue, and present the credible sources that you are planning to use to support your position.
Pertinent statistical data is also important to include. For this paper, consider yourself a lawyer
who must prove your position to win the case.
Present your initial sources and explain how you will use these sources for your research
paper. Within these maximum two prospectus pages, we expect that you will incorporate our
suggestions from your Statement of Intention paper, along with including your approaches to
this research project. (E.g. interviews with/without location visit, particular libraries, etc.). That
is all that should be included in your maximum of two page prospectus paper.
5. The remaining pages will encompass your initial annotated bibliographic sources. (NB: An
annotated bibliography contains 2-3 sentences to briefly summarize each source. Please use
either APA or MLA consistently for your citations)!
