What does this
mean?
We think of ourselves
as being as rich as
other West European
countries – and UK
GDP per head is
indeed similar to other
Germany, France and
other countries. But
this obscures massive
differences between
UK regions. Whereas
prosperity is distributed
evenly in other parts
of Europe, there is a
massive gap between
the richest and poorest
parts of the UK. Keep
in mind, too, that the
UK average is skewed
by the vast wealth in
London. This is not
much help to the
people who live too far
away from the capital
to benefit from jobs or
business there!
