3. Conclusions on the pie charts?
• Black people and to a lesser extent Asians are
over-represented in the prison population (and
actually in the whole of the Criminal Justice
process) e.g. Black people make up just under 3 %
of the population but 11% of the prison
population, Asians make up just under 5% of the
population but 6% of the prison population
• White people are under-represented in the
prison population (and actually in the whole of
the Criminal Justice process)
4. USA – its a more extreme pattern
• Black people comprise about 13% of population
but around 50% of the prison population
• In America at the moment over 1 million Black
people are in prison
• Over 5% of all black males in America are in
prison
• There are more black men in prison in the US
than there are black men imprisoned in the rest
of the world combined
5. Possible Overall conclusions about
ethnic groups and crime?
• CONCLUSION ONE: Black people and to a lesser
extent Asian people simply commit more crime
• CONCLUSION TWO: There is bias and
discrimination in policing and criminal justice
practices
• CONCLUSION THREE: both the above might be
true to a greater and/or lesser extent
• A lot of the material about ethnic groups and
crime engages with this debate
