By Nikolai Avteniev (Sr Software Engineer, LinkedIn)
LinkedIn is the professional profile of record for our 370M+ members globally, but many people don't realize the full potential of their LinkedIn profile – especially on mobile. Adding blogs, photos and other rich content to your profile on a small screen device can get tedious. That's why LinkedIn created Satori, a Hadoop tool that crawls the web and extracts data to discover members' professional content online. Satori uses machine learning techniques and leverages other open source tools like Nutch and Gobblin in order to help match members with relevant content in order to maximize their professional profile. In this talk, Nikolai will share his experience in building the product and discuss the challenges and opportunities encountered along the way.

How we got to where we are now
-‐
In
September
2011
the
charity
that
had
been
supporting
us
no

had
adequate
resources.
-‐
The

and

a

to
run
the
sessions
independently.

Volunteers
continued
to
give
their
time

to

for
the

Since
then
we
have
run

for

Working

5. Underpinning our work
Fundraising:
Although
it
has
been
our
biggest
challenge
this
year,
we
have
made
an
important
start
in
our
fund
raising
focussing
mostly
on

from

We
intend
to
build
on

in

Our

6. Thank You!!!
Some
people
distinguish
themselves
for
their
outstanding
contributions
– Wil
and
Jasper
for
all
the
work
they
have
put
in
behind
the
scenes,
creating
the
website,
making
videos
and
inspiring
others
to
come
forward.
– Debs,
Sasha,
Sam,
Hannah,
Alice,
Kerrise
and
Imogen
for
their
immense
energy,
time
and
passion
put
into
delivering
sessions.
– All
our
Young
Leaders
-‐
our
older
young
people
who
are
taking
responsibility
for
different
elements
of
the
project.
It
would
take
a
book
to
write
a
full
acknowledgement
for
the
parts
each
person
has
played
this
year
and
in
some
cases
for
many
years.
So,
in
the
hope
that
we
have
not
left
anyone
off
this
list
(and
do
please
let
me
know
if
I
have
–
as
it
would
not
be
intentional)
we
have
a
record
of
the
support
in
2012.
Joseph
of
course
does
deserve
a
special
mention
–
he
has
a
capacity
to
draw
people
in
through
his
vision,
compassion
and
ability
to
build
relationships
with
whomever
he
is
with.
And
the
young
people
keep
on
coming,
which
says
so
much.
I
want
to
close
with
some
words
of
one
volunteer.
She
said
“Don’t
thank
me
–
I
love
it”,
and
then
in
a
text
to
Joseph
she
wrote
“Joseph
–
I
don’t
know
what
I’d
do
without
the
youth
project,
which
of
course
wouldn’t
exist
without
you.
So
fond
and
impressed
with
the
group.
2013
is
going
to
be
big!”
Because
of
all
of
you,
