Part of the vision
Part of the vision of the NCBF is to make DC synonymous with the best of spring – a time of revitalization, optimism, and renewed appreciation of nature, art, our communities and relationships. We want to “own” Spring the way NY “owns” the holiday seasons from Thanksgiving through New Years.
To do that, we’ve gone through a process of renewal ourselves. Our mission is to produce the nation’s greatest springtime celebration here in DC that will: (speak to each point)
HOLD OURSELVES TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS
The Festival is transforming; continuing to develop and strengthen through our partnerships and our funding, taking our existing events to a new level as well as the marketing and communications.
DRAW NATIONAL AND GLOBAL VISITORS
People from all over the world plan to be in DC during the Festival
MAKE WASHINGTON DC SYNONYMOUS WITH THE BEST OF SPRING
PRODUCE HIGH QUALITY EVENTS
Our goal is to present a premier, new and innovative programming line up with events of world class caliber…
We want to get there by 2012 and that standard becomes the new norm for future years
DEVELOP STRONG COMMUNITY ROOTS IN DC AND THE GREATER WASHINGTON AREA
Although The National Cherry Blossom Festival has national and international interest…it is still a home town event, unique only to Wasington
At the core of the Festival’s mission are three powerful ideas…
PROTECTING AND CELEBRATING NATURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
PROMOTING INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP BY PRESENTING INSPIRING ARTS FROM DIVERSE CULTURES, THERE IS A FOCUS ON JAPAN
BUILDING COMMUNITY BY BEAUTIFYING AND SHOWCASING THE BEST OF OUR CITY AND ITS NEIGHBORHOODS
What kind of celebrations do we mean? We want our brand to be synonymous with these attributes… FRESH: Celebrating nature, creativity, that sense of renewal. VIVID: experiences that engage all the senses… the sights, the sounds, the tastes of Spring. And ENERGIZING! Stimulating! Focusing on growth and revitalization.
CREATIVE!
AUTHENTIC!
COMMUNITY-MINDED!
These are our core values… We want to ensure everything we do celebrates creativity – art, ingenuity, originality. Authenticity is key. We have a proud heritage to represent. And community-mindedness is an essential trait for us, as I have mentioned.
SPRIING 2012
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the District and the Greater Washington Area. 2012 is the Centennial of the
historic gift of cherry trees from Japan to the United States in honor of international peace and friendship. To
mark this powerfully symbolic milestone The National Cherry Blossom Festival and its partners will stage a
celebration that will be unprecedented. It will tough the highest levels of government, it will involve our greatest
cultural institutions, it will include world class celebrities and performers, it will create new public spaces and
installations.
It will EMBRACE, ENGAGE, ENTERTAIN AND EDUCATE our community, the nation and the world.
The Centennial of the Gift of the Trees will be the opportunity to fuel the next generation of springtime
celebrations for the city. In 2012 the Festival will expand its celebration to several weeks
beginning on the first day of spring and ending on Earth Day. And further, the Festival can be the springboard
to announce and promote the extended and diverse programming presented by the organizations in this room
during the spring season.
The Festival programming will be propelled by the three Festival themes.
Extensive tree plantings are being planned locally, nationally and internationally.
We are exploring the possibility of developing “picnic parks”, planting hundreds of cherry trees welcoming
residents and visitors to celebrate the Festival with picnics under the trees, much like they celebrate the cherry
blossoms in Japan.
Perhaps plant a different species of cherry trees that flower later to extend the blooming period throughout the city.
In collaboration with cultural institutions in this room, our goal is to present world premier performances and one-of-a-kind presentations.
The government of Japan has expressed interest in hosting an event in Japan.
We envision a one hour televised special “Celebrating Spring in the National’s Capital”
We will present arts that commemorate tradition but also looking forward with cutting edge contemporary art.
We will invite artists and photographers from all over the world to submit cherry blossom art for exhibitions.
Work with DC Public and Charter Schools to further expand the Festival’s youth education and art programs,
teaching the importance of the cherry trees in their community as well as the history and meaning of the gift
from Japan as well as knowledge of Japanese culture.
We are working with the National Park Service to create permanent educational wayside exhibits highlighting the
significance of the gift of trees at the Tidal Basin.
Momentum is building. A Host Committee is being established to help raise funds for the Festival and the
Centennial Celebration. We are excited to announce that Daiichi Sankyo, a global pharmasutical leader has
agreed to serve as one of the co-chairs, making a substantial contribution to the Festival. Daiichi’s first President
Jokee chee Takamine had an historical tie to the first gift of trees.
We invite you to be a part of this Centennial Celebration as well as come aboard for the 2011 Festival if you are not yet a participating. Help us stage one of the greatest historic and public celebrations in Washington DC.
Or goal is for the entire city as well as the region to be in concert for the 2012 celebration.
If you are interested in setting up a meeting to discuss the world of possibilities or would like to be actively involved in the strategic planning or the programming committee for the Centennial, please fill out the card that we placed on your seat.
We plan to build on this momentum for the next 100 years 2013 and beyond
