The 2010-2011 Seattle Youth Commission created a curriculum on race and social justice to be implemented in all Seattle public schools. They met with the Office of Civil Rights to develop an engaging and effective lesson plan. They piloted the curriculum at two high schools, Roosevelt and West Seattle, over two days. Students learned about institutionalized racism and watched a documentary. Before the lessons, most students were unaware of institutionalized racism and its relevance to their lives, but after were more aware of the issue and its effects in society. The Youth Commission hopes to expand the curriculum to more schools and work with teachers in the future.
