This presentation is based on a workshop highlighting language as an often overlooked aspect of human rights. Participants explored the concept of linguistic human rights, which relate to the freedom to choose one's language of communication in private and public settings without discrimination. Peace education has a unique perspective that can contribute to addressing issues of linguistic discrimination, linguicism, language oppression and power dynamics, and the loss of heritage languages. Participants discussed ways in which educators can engage language learners through peace perspectives, such as valuing multilingual and multicultural voices, applying peace linguistics and sociolinguistics knowledge, building healthy communication skills in multiple languages, leveraging use of dominant languages for justice and peacemaking, bridging language communities, and gathering insights on peace and conflict from various linguistic and cultural heritages.

This presentation is for the 2015 National Association of Media Literacy Education Conference. Here, I describe a small qualitative study of 28 high school English teachers of predominantly African American students. I provide these teachers' rationale for using popular culture with their students. Two examples are given, as well as next steps for professional development for teachers who seek 21st century literacy and media literacy education methods.
In the 1960’s, visionary leaders dreamed of schools that would provide a challenging academic program PLUS a developmentally responsive environment for young adolescents. Decades later, middle level schools and educators have an opportunity to stand on the shoulders of the courageous giants who paved the way for “the middle school movement.” In this session, participants will view contemporary videos of interviews with these visionary leaders, including their musings about the heritage of middle level education and their sage advice for its future.

He was an Invited Visiting Lecturer at the Oxford Round Table at Oriel College in the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. Dr. Kritsonis was a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University’s Teacher College in New York, and Visiting Scholar in the School of Education at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable.
