The 2009 Norfolk Island Whale Survey observed fewer whales than in 2008 due to inclement weather reducing observation hours. Only 20 humpback whales were observed migrating south, compared to 84 in 2008. Opportunistic observations were also made of offshore bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales, and humpback whales. Sperm whales were confirmed to inhabit the waters around Norfolk Island through photographic evidence. Adverse weather limited survey effort to 159 hours in 2009 versus 215 hours in 2008.
