The Olympic Games began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece and were held every four years to honor the god Zeus. Events at the Games included foot races like the speed race and diaulos, wrestling, boxing, the pentathlon which included the long jump, javelin, discus and wrestling, and chariot races. Competitors had to be Greek men and cheating was punished by fines and whipping. The Olympics continued for over 1,000 years until they were abolished by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I in 393 AD.
