School Attendance and Transportation
• School attendance is very important. However, we are
aware that there are times your child may be absent
from school.
• When your child is absent for any reason, please send
a WRITTEN excuse on the day he/she returns.
• All transportation changes must be given in writing by
the parent (every time). Due to the importance of
safety for your child, VERBAL MESSAGES FROM
THE CHILD ABOUT TRANSPORTATION CHANGES
WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

By the end of the year, 1st graders should be able to read
and spell words with selected patterns and common high-
frequency words. During the 1st grade year, teachers
assess students’ ability to use these words correctly in
their reading and writing, and teach clear, legible printing.
*Spelling tests will begin to be recorded on report cards in
January.

The 1st grade curriculum focuses on the areas of
mathematical practice, number and operations in base
ten, geometry, measurement and data, operations, and
algebraic thinking. By the end of 1st grade, students
should be able to do the following:
- addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition
and subtraction within 20;
- whole number relationships and place value, including
grouping in tens and ones.
- measurement and measuring lengths.
- Tell and write time to the hour and half hour.
- Solve problems using attributes of shapes and by
putting together and taking apart shapes.

Earth Science
- use weather instruments- such as a thermometer,
wind vane, and barometer to observe, measure and
analyze weather data to determine weather
patterns. -- explore the changes in water (solid,
liquid, gas)
- Natural resources (water, oil, soil)

Homework will be assigned and checked daily,
Monday-Thursday. Students are also expected
to read 15-20 minutes every night.
