Virtualized environments have become standard for organizations seeking benefits like reduced costs and flexibility. However, infrastructure elements often remain separated. Hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) integrates compute, storage, and networking through software to provide these benefits. This document examines the pros and cons of HCI for small and medium-sized businesses, discussing how HCI simplifies management but may also create challenges around security, staffing needs, and scalability.
The Future of Software Defined Storage (SDS)Ahmed Banafa
Software-Defined Storage (SDS) is a term for computer data storage technology which separates storage hardware from the software that manages the storage infrastructure. This technology enables a "software-defined storage environment" and provides policy management for services such as duplication, replication, thin provisioning, snapshots and backup.
True Hyperconvergence Checklist from SimpliVity SolutionStation
The document outlines the key characteristics of a true hyperconverged infrastructure solution according to SimpliVity. The solution is easily scalable and provides centralized management of resources across data centers for streamlined operations.
The document summarizes the findings of a proof of concept (POC) that tested adding compute resources to storage arrays and solutions in order to create more efficient and cost-effective storage. Key findings include:
1) Adding CPU cores and RAM to storage controllers and solutions through virtualization can reduce storage consumption by up to two-thirds and improve performance and resiliency.
2) Compute-intensive solutions that leverage data deduplication and compression in software delivered significant space savings and faster rebuild times compared to hardware-based solutions.
3) The POC validated that adding compute to storage follows the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) provider's business model of self-service and delivers efficient primary
This document provides an overview of software-defined storage (SDS) concepts and discusses several SDS solutions from major vendors. It defines SDS and explains how adding a control layer allows for visibility, communication, and allocation of storage resources. This document discusses different types of virtualization technologies. It begins by defining virtualization and describing its benefits such as standardization, rationalization, and improved efficiency. It then categorizes various virtualization types including server/platform, desktop, software, system resources, data, and network virtualization. For each type, it provides details on sub-types and discusses opportunities and challenges. The document aims to help consultants, administrators and decision makers understand and evaluate different virtualization options for their organizations.
Historically backups have been defined and referenced by the hostname of the physical system being protected. This has worked well when the relationship between the physical host and the operating system was a direct, one to one relationship. Backup processing impact was limited to each physical client and the biggest concern was saturating the network with backup traffic. This was easily managed by limiting the number of simultaneous client backups via a simple setting within the NetBackup policy.
Virtual machine technologies have changed this physical hardware dynamic. Dozens of operating systems (virtual machines) can now reside on a single physical (ESX) host connected to a single storage LUN with network access through a single NIC. When using traditional policy configurations, backup processing randomly occurs with no regard to the physical location of each virtual machine. As backups progress, a subset of ESX servers can be heavily impacted with active backups while other ESX systems sit idly waiting for their virtual machines to be protected. The effect of this is that backups tend to be slower than they need to be and backup processing impact on the ESX servers tends to be random and lopsided. Standard backup policy definitions simply do not translate well into virtual environments.
The NetBackup Virtual machine Intelligent Policy (VIP) feature is designed to solve this problem and more. With Virtual machine Intelligent Policy, backup processing can be automatically load balanced across the entire virtual machine environment. No ESX server is unfairly taxed with excessive backup processing and backups can be significantly faster. Once configured, this load balancing automatically detects changes in the virtual machine environment and automatically compensates backup processing based on these changes. Virtual machine Intelligent Policy places virtual machine backups on autopilot.
Virtualization involves creating virtual versions of computer resources like hardware, storage, and networking. It provides benefits like consolidation of resources, redundancy, migration of virtual machines between physical hosts, and centralized management. There are several types of virtualization including hardware/server virtualization, desktop virtualization, software virtualization, memory virtualization, storage virtualization, data virtualization, and network virtualization. Virtualization allows more efficient use of resources and flexibility for IT systems and users.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

What is data storage virtualization technology? Storage systems are undergoing a digital
revolution to enhance functionality. Businesses are implementing advanced storage software to
increase scalability, flexibility, and profits. This has seen the development of virtual tools for
business operations. Virtualized storage is online innovation that causes huge migration from
traditional data storage solutions to digital systems.
Virtualization is modern technology that allows organizations to dismantle physical hardware
from management. Storage virtualization is a tech practice that groups physical storage servers
from various network storage devices into a single virtual storage platform which is managed in a
centralized console. The process of decoupling management from the infrastructure helps ease
data storage.
Virtualizations help in flexibility and scalability by pooling all disks/hardware to a single virtual
storage device. The storage resources can be divided and accessed in a local setup. Organizations
can use hardware inside and outs the storage pool to satisfy their needs. Most companies use
data storage in various configurations, such as SANs, virtual logical unit numbers, RAID groups,
and logical volumes.

Definition of Data storage virtualization Technology by Storage
Network Industry Association (SNIA).
A brief definition from SNIA says storage virtualization is the process of abstracting or isolating
the internal function of a storage system from the application, compute servers, and network
resources to enable the application and network to manage storage independently.
Software-defined storage SDS vs. storage virtualization
SDS and storage virtualization share common factors but have distinct differences. The two
systems differ based on the type of abstraction and where it’s being carried out. This means
storage is being abstracted in both systems, but the reasons and how the process is conducted
define the difference.
Software-define storage SDS
The SDS software technically abstracts the software and programming that help control storage
operation from the hardware. The process significantly reduces hardware components to data
storage capacity. This allows the abstracted software to control the whole system. SDS helps

users utilize commodity or traditional storage devices without digital storage algorithms to
function properly.
Storage virtualization
Storage virtualization operates more on pooling storage capacity from various or multiple
networked storage devices to a single storage platform. This allows users to manage storage
resources from a single manageable system.
In conclusion, SDS abstracts storage tasks and capabilities from physical hardware, while storage
virtualization abstracts capacity from multiple storage resources and pools them in a single
ecosystem.
Virtualization
Virtualization is a computing method that allows users to abstract a virtual layer on top of
physical hardware underlying the system. The layer helps in virtual environments called virtual
machines, which access the hardware using a hypervisor. The facility creates VMs, and it’s
responsible for connecting available hardware resources to the virtual machines.
The physical resources are set separate from VMs; however, VMs can live in a virtual space in a
single device. VMs are compatible with different OS and can easily use and manage any
resources.
How does storage virtualization work?

https://itphobia.com/data-storage-virtualization-technology/ 5/14
Organizations implement storage virtualization to curb scaling and management challenges
when handling data. Companies incorporate experts to virtualize storage functions such as
masking, zoning, host-bus adaptors, logical volumes, RAID, and distributed file systems.
The features allow storage virtualization to accumulate large amounts of data from a wide
spectrum of physical resources in the data center and large networks. Storage virtualization
creates an abstraction layer between the operating system and physical storage hardware. The
virtualized storage is independent and can settle in any location. This causes storage utilization
to go up due to capacity. Note storage virtualization supports data migration and replication.
Suppose hardware is removed; the data can be moved to another LUN by replication.
The process is swift as it doesn’t disrupt the system’s normal functioning. The host feature helps
strengthen storage virtualization in different situations like dynamic provisioning, allowing LUNs
flexibility to meet rising demands.
Types of storage virtualizations
With a detailed explanation, organizations need to understand different types of storage
virtualization and their functionality.
A host-based storage virtualization
It’s a unique approach that uses software and device drives/hardware to virtualize physical disks
on the host device.

Device-based storage virtualization
The software merges virtualization and management within a single storage device.
Network-based storage virtualization
Network-based storage virtualization uses appliances such as a server or smart switch to
abstract between the network and I/O via a fiber channel (ISCSI SAN).
How to optimize data storage virtualization?
Modern organizations use storage optimization practices, strategies, technologies, and
frameworks to incorporate infrastructure storage resources. The practices are designed to help
Companies realize any inefficiencies and work towards improving their storage systems.
Businesses can design, and develop high-end virtualized storage solutions to help increase
performance, productivity, utilization, and expand capacity.
Storage virtualization allows for optimized interoperability in heterogeneous storage resources. A
combination of storage virtualization, network virtualization, and server virtualization increases
scalability, cost reduction, easy management, and enhanced data center performance.
Storage virtualization reduces disk usage in storage resources. This can be achieved by gaining
visibility on all storage devices through virtualization. The process merges all existing storage
resources, after which the user can classify and visualize the resources. Experts incorporate

storage management software and policy-based storage automation systems to enhance
performance.
Benefits of data storage virtualization technology
The storage virtualization benefits are established from the decoupling of storage resources from
management to fill visibility in data storage capacity. The software helps in increasing efficiency
to manage the capacity.
Storage virtualizations help improve data storage performance, data security, and capacity.
Its reduced complexity in management allows developers to fix issues fast without stopping
the whole system.
The software enables dynamic storage utilization and virtual scalability.
Storage virtualization saves on time and cost associated with data migration. Experts can
resolve issues easily through simple techniques like replication. Unlike traditional storage
systems, virtual storage system provides prebuilt features to guide users. Organizations don’t
need to hire more human resources for virtualized storage systems.
Storage virtualization helps in extending storage infrastructure lifespan by increasing its
capabilities.
The software enhances data storage through digital storage features like tiering, caching, and
replication.
Storage virtualization allows IT experts to have full visibility of the data storage, thus easing
maintenance.
