2. Our story
SRI (System of Rice Intensification) is a methodology used to increase the production
of rice. SRI was first introduced in 1998 at Khumaltar Research Farm.
SRI has been shown to improve yields in rice production by 1.5 to 2.5 times across
Nepal. This technology was first identified in Madagascar in 1983.
SRI requires younger seedlings, singly spaced, and hand-weeded by tools like the
rotary weeder-- unlike the traditional method where 4 to 5 seedlings (or more) are
planted without any fixed spacing, and also requires a lot of water compared to SRI
method.
Scientists have been actively researching and promoting the use of SRI in Nepal for
over a decade.
The Nepal SRI Network was formed in 2015 to accelerate and facilitate further
research, advocacy and promotion of this technology that can easily increase
productivity without increasing costs to the farmer or causing negative impacts to
the environment.
