arth tones and textures define the home on Double
Oaks Drive in Westridge Estates — a name that in-
spires visions of Southern hospitality and style. Bil-
lie and Eddie Jones have lived in the home originally built as
a “spec” house since 2009. The 3,250 square-foot, two-story
home is not intimidating; instead it is cozy, warm and in-
viting. An eclectic mix of design elements makes the house
unique; from a mix of Southwestern colors on textured walls
to “shabby chic” elements in the kitchen.
Mustard-colored stucco walls and high ceilings greet visi-
tors in the foyer. Hickory hardwood floors are inlayed with a
darker maple wood. The connecting dining room with

bench style dining room table.
“We didn’t have a dining room ta-
ble when we were looking at this
house, “said Billie, and “we wanted
this one. It was the table or no
deal.” Accent pieces fill the room,
including family heirlooms.
Billie and Eddie enjoy enter-
taining friends and family in their
modern but cozy kitchen complete
with cork flooring. The open, airy
room has seating at the teakwood
bar, dine-in nook table under a bay
window with a view of the expansive backyard (through plantation
shutters), and sofa seating by a stone fireplace. Painted cherry cabi-
nets are Southern Living style; countertops are granite and mar-
ble. Framed images of trees are strategically placed throughout the
home, positioned so the viewer “walks into them.”
Billie’s sanctuary is the tropical garden nestled behind the house.

5. The master bathroom
It is a place for meditation, reading
and entertaining. A winding, curvy
brick path leads from the front of
the home to the garden for a “follow
the yellow brick road” moment. El-
ephant ears, flowering Mandevilla,
hostas, Cana lilies and other plants
thrive in the green garden. Outdoor
seating near a fire pit, on the deck or
under pecan trees invite family and
friends to gather.
“We have seating everywhere,
intentionally, and we have lots of
room for people to lay their heads,”
said Billie. “This is a ‘grow old in’ house; everything we need is here.”

‘Across the Blue Ridge’
Returns to Radio
F
or a decade or so, from the late 1980s to the late
’90s, Paul Brown mixed downhome twang into the
classical-heavy music format at WFDD, the Triad’s
National Public Radio affiliate.
“For me it was a great window into the entire world
of bluegrass and regional music and old-time music,”
said Bill Payne, a sound engineer and director of the
Triad Acoustic Stage concert series. “I learned about
all of the characters that Paul Brown brought to life
through that program. It was a real eye-opener for me.
I loved it.”
The last broadcast of “Across the Blue
Ridge” aired in the summer of 1999 on
WFDD, owned by Wake Forest Uni-
versity. Brown left for the bright lights
of Washington, D.C., and a job at NPR
HQ. He returned to Winston-Salem
in 2013, and not long afterward started
plotting the show’s return. A year ago
Brown teamed up with Richard Emmett,
a veteran of the Triad arts scene who now serves as pro-
gram director for the Blue Ridge Music Center in Ga-
lax, Va.
Together they staged a series of concerts called
“Across the Blue Ridge — Old Sounds, New Trails”
from Greensboro to West Jefferson, showcasing tradi-
tional music veterans (Alice Gerrard, Laurelyn Dossett)
and newcomers (The Buckstankle Boys, Spencer Branch).
Brown emceed the shows and played a little fiddle and
banjo himself along with his trio, the Piedmont Pals.
The name and concept of “Across the Blue Ridge”
was back in the public eye. The campaign revved up
in earnest in November, when WFDD announced the
return of the radio show and launched an Indiegogo
online fundraising campaign to help pay for its produc-
tion costs.
“I’m excited about it, because of the combination of
new technologies and the fact that I’m not working a
full-time hard news or programming job at a radio sta-
tion or network,” Brown said.
The revived “Across the Blue Ridge” will air Satur-
day nights at 8 p.m., with the first broadcast Jan. 2. It
will have several things in common with its predeces-
sor: an hour length, a focus on traditional music and,
of course, the host. Bob Carlin, a music historian, author
and musician, will also produce segments for the show.
Brown plans to continue the tradition of “Across the
Blue Ridge” concerts, as well.
“We really want to move around the community and
have people feel this show is theirs,” he said.
