GREENVILLE
Greenville

Wayne Preston never thought
that barbecue would change his life. Or, that his
restaurant, Bucky’s BBQ, on Roper Mountain Road
would make the S.C. Barbeque Association’s list of
100-mile barbecue destinations.
The unassuming and down-to-earth barbecue man
is not about using special hog breeds or anything
fancy—wood and technique are what makes his pork
worth the drive. Pork and barbecue lovers embrace the
food and the man behind the success story, one that
could make for a Hollywood movie. Preston hit hard
times when his business failed and suddenly he was $2
million in debt and living in a warehouse.
Preston had ingenuity and a skill —he knew how
to cook pork. He kept the electricity on by selling
barbecue on the side of the road, right outside his
failed business. With the help of friends Preston
started his business and today, Bucky’s has four
locations in Greenville. Good food kept simple works
just fine in the city known as “foodie paradise.”
Bucky’s is a mere five miles from the vibrant,
bustling downtown that is the heartbeat of Greenville.
Once known as the “Textile Center of the World,” the
city with 600 restaurants has reinvented itself into a
must-see travel destination.
Not all city downtowns have survived, and fewer
have thrived at the level Greenville has achieved.
The city’s lifestyle and amenities attract visitors and
businesses that relocate and put down roots. The
nationally-acclaimed downtown features outdoor
nature elements, tree-shaded streetscapes, public
artwork, entertainment venues, shops, and more diverse
restaurants than most cities. Upscale hotels like the
historic 11-story Westin Poinsett, Aloft Greenville and
AAA four-Diamond hotel Hyatt Regency make it easy to
stay downtown.
Art in all forms is important in the city named one
of the “Top 100 Arts Small Towns in the U.S.” The
Bon Secours Wellness Arena (16,000 seats), formerly
the Bi-Lo Center, brings in national artists and sports
events. Music concerts, special events, Broadway shows
and theater captivate audiences at the Peace Center.
Live theater productions entertain audiences at the
Warehouse Theatre and Centre Stage.
Visual arts are on display at the Greenville County
Museum of Art. The museum is home to the largest and
most complete collection of Andrew Wyeth watercolors as
well as works by Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keeffe and
other famed artists. The Bob Jones University Museum
and Art Gallery has the Western Hemisphere’s largest
collection of religious works.
Music is in the air all year long in Greenville. The
city is home to the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, the
Carolina Pops Orchestra and other music organizations.
From March to September, live outdoor (and free)
concerts kick off the weekend with the Greenville Main
Street Friday event.
Food and festivals are a winning combination that fuel
the local economy, and bring together locals and visitors
to celebrate food along with art, music and culture.
Festivals of note are Artisphere, a three-day art festival;
“Fall for Greenville,” a three-day music and food street
festival; and Euphoria, an annual three-day food/music/
wine event.
Judging by attendance, many consider Euphoria the city’s
premiere festival (September 22 – 25). In its 11th year, the
festival, named “One of the “10 Southern Food Festivals
You Need to Taste” by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
highlights Greenville’s culinary landscape, culture and
award-winning revitalized downtown. Attracting more
than 6,000 guests from 30 states and countries, this four-
day weekend features celebrated chefs, celebrity singers
and songwriters, craft brewers, cookbook authors, master
sommeliers and unique luxury experiences. >>

Songwriter’s Recipe, Kids in the

“This year we will spotlight more
nationally acclaimed talent than
ever before,” said director Brianna
Shaw. “The emphasis for Euphoria
2016 will be on intimate culinary,
musical and learning experiences
that relate to the South.”
Greenville’s location in the
foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains is perfect for outdoor
recreation and communing with
nature. Parks are gathering places
for walks, picnics and unwinding.
Favorite parks for recreation or
relaxing are Conestee Park, Falls
Park on the Reedy (walk on the
pedestrian suspension bridge) and
Paris Mountain State Park. Bike
lovers gravitate to the Greenville
Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail.
In the spring baseball lovers
start anticipating the great
American pastime. Baseball is
part of the city’s history thanks
to Shoeless Joe Jackson, the
hometown man who played in
the 1919 World Series and has
a museum dedicated to him.
Fans go to Greenville’s version
of Boston’s Fenway Park, Fluor
Field, to watch the minor league
team, Greenville Drive.
Its rich culinary landscape
has landed Greenville firmly on
the foodie destination map with
a diverse range of restaurants,
many locally owned, that appeal to
every price range and palate. New
food and beverage establishments
open each year adding to the city’s
choices. Tried and true popular
restaurants are Larkin’s on the >>
