FUTURE OF LVC SIMULATION EVOLVING
TOWARDS THE MSaaS CONCEPT

A new Disruption is arriving : using
Simulation as Services
Simulation for

(CD&E)
(M&S as a
Service or
MSaaS)

But Simulation Architectures are
not disrupting…

Live-Virtual-

and CD&E)
Network-

Simulators
(MSaaS)

 Simulation systems are still design to work standalone,
 Existing simulation standards were not designed with a System of
Systems (SoS) approach.
 Interoperability is limited and only at a system level at best
The Challenges
 Run over any available platform
 24x7 availability
 Quick scenario set-up
 Over any kind of network
 Fast availability
 Easy search (indexing&tagging)
 Seamless integration
 No error allowed in client side
In integration
In operation
MSaaS will change the way we
build M&S Systems
4
Concept is close to (or inspired
by) “apps” in smart-phones
Sim apps as black-boxes:
users don´t need to know
about:
Security
How the services are
implemented
How to interoperate everything
Certification of Assets : users
got what was promised
The Quest for MSaaS : Looking for
the M&S Apps Store
5
A platform to support the
deployment of Simulation services
in the cloud must be created
Simulation Assets must evolve to a
Cloud Architecture
New business models must be
implemented
What we need to use Sim Assets in
the Cloud?
6
Here, we will take a look only
in the technical issues
A Big Chasm to cross before to go

What should be…

because of
gateways
But now we have …
7
Technical Challenge to solve :
Simulation Architectures
8
Simulators with
different architectures

Federation of
Simulations
With existing
architectures even
simple federations
are complex.

How to solve the problem : Going

Using a Layered Simulation Architecture (LSA) for MSaaS
Layered Simulation
Architecture
C2SIM
DIS
HLA Converging multiple
standards in one common
platfform.
 Leveraging a standard
well known in operational
systems : OMG DDS
(Data Distribution
Services)
 Improving integrability
and interoperability with
common services
LSA is trying to provide a solution
to pains found on LVCAR
 Gateway solutions are
difficult to develop, upgrade
and maintain
 Lack of Convergence of
Simulation Architectures
 Lack of common data models,
protocols and data distribution
mechanisms
 Performance requisites are
not guaranteed
 Lack of plug&play capability
 Proprietary Architectures of
the simulators
11
LSA follows an open innovation
approach to solve LVCAR pains
12
13
Main reasons to use SISO LSA as a Platform for MSaaS
 Provides a SoS architecture
 Provides a common platform to cohabitate
different standards
 Leverage Object Modeling Group (OMG) DDS
standard, to have an open wire protocol
for simulation
 Layered architecture can provide a common
platform to the services in the Cloud
14
Others reasons to use SISO LSA as a Platform for MSaaS
 OMG DDS is useful in any kind of
network and condition. It is available
in almost any type of Operating System,
platform and network.
 DDS can make easier the integration
of Live assets, because DDS is already in
use in many operational systems.
 We can have also a solution to the the
security challenge, using security
profile in OMG DDS std.
Where are we now with LSA?
 Nominating standard at SISO by LSA Study Group. Final report
and Product Nomination (PN) available at SISO reflector.
 Several use cases already available, see references in paper.
 PN’s plan is to have a first draft of the standard at the end of 2015
and a full mapping with HLA and DIS at the end of 2016.
