We Worship the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Spirit and Truth of His Gospel
Though the Lord had brought them out of Egypt, “all the congregation of the people of Israel”
grumbled against Him, because “there was no water for the people to drink” (Ex. 17:1).
Despite their quarreling, the Lord graciously provided for them. He did not strike the people for
their sins, but by the hand of Moses He struck the Rock instead and brought forth water for the
people. In the same way living water flows from the pierced side of Christ “about the sixth
hour” (John 4:6, 19:14), when He is lifted up on the Cross for the sins of the world. He is “the
gift of God” (John 4:10), the Well from which the Holy Spirit is poured out and becomes in His
people “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). By this grace in which we
stand, being at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, we “worship the Father in spirit
and truth” (John 4:23). “We rejoice in hope of the glory of God,” because “God’s love has been
poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Rom. 5:2, 5).

8. Exodus 17:1-7
Water from the Rock
17 All the congregation of the people of Israel
moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages,
according to the commandment of the LORD,
and camped at Rephidim, but there was no
water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the
people quarreled with Moses and said, ―Give us
water to drink.‖ And Moses said to them, ―Why
do you quarrel with me? Why do you test
the LORD?‖ 3 But the people thirsted there for
water, and the people grumbled against Moses
and said, ―Why did you bring us up out of
Egypt, to kill us and our children and our
livestock with thirst?‖ 4 So Moses cried to
the LORD, ―What shall I do with this people?
They are almost ready to stone me.‖ 5 And
the LORD said to Moses, ―Pass on before the
people, taking with you some of the elders of
Israel, and take in your hand the staff
with which you struck the Nile, and
go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the
rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and
water shall come out of it, and the people will
drink.‖ And Moses did so, in the sight of the
elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the

9. Romans 5:1-8
Peace with God Through Faith
5 Therefore, since we have been justified by
faith, we[a] have peace with God through our
Lord Jesus Christ.2 Through him we have
also obtained access by faith[b] into this
grace in which we stand,
and we[c] rejoice[d] in hope of the glory of
God. 3 Not only that, but werejoice in our
sufferings, knowing that suffering produces
endurance, 4 and endurance produces
character, and character produces
hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame,
because God's love has been poured into our
hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been
given to us. 6 For while we were still weak,
at the right time Christ died for the
ungodly.7 For one will scarcely die for a
righteous person—though perhaps for a
good person one would dare even to die—
8 but God shows his love for us in thatwhile
we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

10. John 4:5-30
5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the
field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well
was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was
sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.[a] 7 A
woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to
her, ―Give me a drink.‖ 8 (For his disciples had gone away
into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to
him, ―How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a
woman of Samaria?‖ (For Jews have no dealings with
Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, ―If you knew the gift of
God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‗Give me a drink,‘
you would have asked him, and he would have given
you living water.‖ 11 The woman said to him, ―Sir, you have
nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do
you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father
Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did
his sons and his livestock.‖ 13 Jesus said to her, ―Everyone
who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 butwhoever
drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty
again.[b]The water that I will give him will become in him a
spring of water welling up to eternal life.‖ 15 The woman
said to him, ―Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be
thirsty or have to come here to draw water.‖
16 Jesus said to her, ―Go, call your husband, and come
here.‖ 17 The woman answered him, ―I have no husband.‖
Jesus said to her, ―You are right in saying, ‗I have no
husband‘; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one
you now have is not your husband. What you have said is
true.‖ 19 The woman said to him, ―Sir, I perceive that you
area prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped onthis mountain, but
you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to
worship.‖ 21 Jesus said to her,―Woman, believe me, the hour
is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem
will you worship the Father.22 You worship what you do not
know;we worship what we know, for salvation is from the
Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the
true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth,
for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God
is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit
and truth.‖ 25 The woman said to him, ―I know thatMessiah
is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will
tell us all things.‖ 26 Jesus said to her, ―I who speak to you
am he.‖
27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he
was talking with a woman, but no one said, ―What do you
seek?‖ or, ―Why are you talking with her?‖ 28 So the woman
left her water jar and went away into town and said to the
people, 29 ―Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did.
Can this be the Christ?‖ 30 They went out of the town and
were coming to him.
John 4:39-42
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because
of the woman's testimony, ―He told me all that I ever
did.‖ 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked
him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And
many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the
woman, ―It is no longer because of what you said that we
believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that
this is indeed the Savior of the world.‖

14 For a long time I have held my peace;
I have kept still and restrained myself;
now I will cry out like a woman in labor;
I will gasp and pant.
15 I will lay waste mountains and hills,

16 And I will lead the blind
in a way that they do not know,

Israel's Failure to Hear and See
18 Hear, you deaf,

Ephesians 5:8-14
8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the
Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in
all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is
pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in theunfruitful works of
darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to
speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is
exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that

John 9:1-41
9 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his
disciples asked him, ―Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents,
that he was born blind?‖ 3 Jesus answered, ―It was not that this
man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be
displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent
me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As
long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.‖ 6 Having
said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the
saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7 and said
to him, ―Go, wash in the pool of Siloam‖ (which means Sent).
So he went and washed and came back seeing.

were saying, ―Is this not the man who used to sit and
beg?‖ 9 Some said, ―It is he.‖ Others said, ―No, but he is like

called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to

―This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.‖
But others said, ―How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?‖
And there was a division among them. 17 So they said again to
the blind man, ―What do you say about him, since he has opened
your eyes?‖ He said, ―He is a prophet.‖
18 The Jews[a] did not believe that he had been blind and had
received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who
had received his sight 19 and asked them, ―Is this your son, who
you say was born blind? How then does he now see?‖ 20 His
parents answered, ―We know that this is our son and that he was
born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we
know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak
for himself.‖ 22 (His parents said these things because they feared
the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone
should confess Jesus[b] to be Christ, he was to be put out of the
synagogue.) 23 Therefore his parents said, ―He is of age; ask
him.‖
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind
and said to him, ―Give glory to God. We know thatthis man is a
sinner.‖ 25 He answered, ―Whether he is a sinner I do not know.
One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I
see.‖ 26 They said to him, ―What did he do to you? How did he
open your eyes?‖ 27 He answered them, ―I have told you already,
and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do

saying, ―You are his disciple, but we are disciples of
Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this
man, we do not know where he comes from.‖ 30 The man
answered, ―Why, this isan amazing thing! You do not know
where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know
that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper
of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the

You Are My Refuge

142 With my voice I cry out to the LORD;
with my voice I plead for mercy to the LORD.
2 I pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.
3 When my spirit faints within me,
you know my way!
In the path where I walk
they have hidden a trap for me.
4 Look to the right and see:
there is none who takes notice of me;
no refuge remains to me;
no one cares for my soul.
5 I cry to you, O LORD;
I say, ―You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.‖
6 Attend to my cry,
for I am brought very low!
