Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

1. 유년기와 초기 디자인 경력
1968년 7월5일 파리에서 튀니지출신의 아버지와 이탈리아 출신의 어머니 사이에서 태어났다.
자유분방한 성장기를 보냈으며 어머니가 의상실을 했던 것에서 영향을 받아 자연스럽게
어렸을 때부터 패션에 관심을 가지게 된다. 프랑스 그랑 드 제꼴 졸업 후 사회 정치학을 배우며
기자의 꿈을 키워갔지만 패션에 대한 강한 열망으로 데꼴 뒤 루부르에서 미술과 역사를
공부한다. 1989년 부터 4년간 조제 레뷔 Jose Levy에서 어시스턴트로 경력을 쌓고 패션
컨설턴트인 쟝 잭 피카르 밑에서 경험을 쌓는다. 이후 입생 로랑 리브 고쉬 옴므 Yves saint
Laurent Rive Gauche Homme에서 디자인을 시작하여 2000년 디올 옴므 크리에이티브
디렉터로서 일하기 시작한다.

2. 디올 옴므 Dior Homme 의 크리에이티브 디렉터
에디 슬리먼은 7년간 디올 옴므의 수장이자 크리에이티브 디렉터로 있으며 브랜드와 패션계에
엄청난 변화와 화제를 가져온다. 당시에 남성복은 돌체 앤 가바나 Dolce & Gabbana의 모델과
같이 남성적인 근육을 강조하는 것이 대세였다. 하지만 에디 슬리먼은 기존의 남성복 컬렉션에
대한 고정관념을 깨고 파격적으로 슬림하게 디자인 된 옷을 선보인다. 일각에서는 일반
남성복에 의해 페미닌 하다는 지적을 받기도 하지만 세계적으로 그의 스타일은 인기를 얻어
일명 스키니라 불리는 거대한 트렌드를 일으켰다. 컬렉션 무대에서 또한 전문모델이 아닌 그가
직접 캐스팅한 길거리 모델을 세우는 등 기존의 값비싼 명품 브랜드에서 하지 않던 파격적인
시도들을 한다.

3. 포토그래퍼로서의 에디 슬리먼
2007년 4월 개인 브랜드 론칭 문제로 LVMH와 타협이 되지 않아
자신의 어시스턴트 디자이너로 일하던 크리스 반 아쉐에게
디올옴므의 수석디자이너 자리를 넘기고 패션계를 떠난다. 이후
에디슬리먼은 포토그래퍼, 아티스트로 활동하면서 프라다
맨즈웨어 컬렉션 켐페인 촬영까지 맡으며 그의 예술성을 보여준다.

4. 생 로랑 Saint Laurent Paris 의 크리에이티브 디렉터
이후 2013년 에디 슬리먼은 Yves Saint Laurent 이 Saint Laurent Paris로 바뀐 후
크리에이티브 디렉터로 발탁되었다. 몇년간 이브 생 로랑의 크리에이티브 디렉터로 있던
스테파노 필라티가 브랜드를 떠나고 에디슬리먼이 그 뒤를 잇는 다는 소식은 보수적인
패션인사들에게는 썩 반가운 소식이 아니었다. 이브 생 로랑이 원래 가지고있던 섹시하고
파워풀 한 이미지와 에디슬리먼의 장난스러운 색깔이 어울리지 않을 것이라고 예상했기
때문이다. 이러한 기대와 우려 속에 이브 생 로랑은 생로랑 파리로 브랜드이름과 로고를
바꾸었고 곧바로 발표된 그의 컬렉션은 그 전의 이브 생 로랑의 이미지는 전혀 찾아볼 수
없었다. 우아하기보다는 락시크적인 무드로 가득 찬 컬렉션이었고 에디슬리먼의 색깔이
진하게 묻어나오는 컬렉션이었다. 컬렉션이 발표된 이후 이브생 로랑 하우스의 전통과 뿌리를
무시하고 자신의 컬렉션을 한다는 비판이 쏟아져 나왔다. 하지만 이러한 비난에도 불구하고
각종 매체에서는 그를 주목하고, 그의 매니아들은 찬사를 보내며 많은 셀러브리티들이 그에게
러브콜을 보낸다.

다음은 그가 생로랑의 수장이 된 이후 패션지<싱글즈>에서 발췌한 내용이다.
에디 슬리먼이 돌아왔다. 그의 패션 유전자는 생 로랑에 젊음을 불어넣었고, 패션계는 또다시
그의 활약에 열광하기 시작했다.
"반응은 극과 극이다. 스테파노 필라티의 고급스러운 YSL을 그리워 하느냐 젊어진 생 로랑을
받아들이느냐. 예전 고객은 슬퍼할지도 모르지만 그 딸들은 기꺼이 지갑을 열 것이다." 안나
델로 루소의 예상은 적중했다. 젊은 고객층이 늘어난 것은 물론 에디 슬리먼이라는 이름에
열광하는 마니아들이 모두 생 로랑에 흡수되며 실제 매출도 급 상승 한것. 물론 그렇다고
에디슬리먼을 둘러싼 논쟁이 쉽게 끝나진 않겠지만, 한가지 분명한 건 이같이 파격적인 변화가
없었다면 생 로랑은 그저 과거 유산을 따라 재미없게 흘러갔을 거란 사실이다.

에디슬리먼은 디올 옴므의 수장일 당시 남성복을 파격적이게 슬림하게 디자인하여 기존의 남성복의 고정관념을 깼고 그의 슬림한 스타일은 전
세계의 사랑을 받게 된다.
이러한 에디슬리먼의 슬림한 옷은 패션인들에세 다이어트를 해서라고 입고싶은 욕구를 불어넣기에 충분했다. 심지어 경쟁브랜드인 샤넬의
수장이자 패션계의 거장인 칼 라거펠트는 에디슬리먼의 슬림한 디자인의 옷을 입기위해서 47kg을 감량하여 당시에 큰 이슈를 불러일으켰고
에디 슬리먼과 디올옴므로 이목을 집중시켰다.
"마른 몸은 옷을 입기에 훨씬 낫다. 큰 체형, 다시 말해 몸집이 큰 것은 옷을
벗었을 때가 더 낫다. 물론 개인적인 선호도와 취향의 차이지만 남자들에게도
다이어트는 필요하다."

크로스 섹슈얼 Cross Sexual 이란 여성스러운 스타일을 추구하는 남성들을 가리킨다. 패션이외의 행동, 말투 등은 남성스럽다는 것이
특징이다. 에디 슬리먼은 여리여리하고 여성스러운 모델을 컬렉션 무대의 모델로 채용하거나 광고 캠페인 모델로 채용하였다. 이러한 성별이
모호하고 슬림한 스타일은 전세계적으로 인기를 끌었으며 여성들의 마음 또한 사로잡아 실제로 남성복 컬렉션인 디올옴므의 소비자중 10%는
여성고객이었다고 한다. 당시 명품 남성복의 정석은 정장이고, 남성성을 강조한 근육질의 남성이 주를 이루던 시기였기 때문에 이러한 시도는

그에게 음악은 항상 가장 영감을 주는 존재이다. 그는 젊음을 상징하는 락과 펑크문화에서 많은 영감을 얻으며 해당 장르의 아티스트들을
촬영하기도 한다. 그가 컬렉션에서 가장 많이 쓰는 블랙 색상과 가죽, 망사, 부츠 등은 락과 펑크문화에서 가장 많이 쓰이는 요소이며 이것을
세계 최고의 명품브랜드답게 최상의 소재와 재단으로 탈바꿈하여 디자인한다. 이러한 디자인은 젊은이들의 전폭적인 지지를 얻으며 세계
각국의 셀러브리티와 아티스트들이 러브콜을 보낸다.

포토그래퍼로서의 에디슬리먼
에디슬리먼은 디올 하우스를 떠난 뒤 5년간 포토그래퍼로서 활동하였다. 그는 패션
디자인에서만 천부적인 재능을 보일 뿐 아니라 포토그래퍼로서도 그 능력을 인정받는다. 당시
그는 프라다 맨즈웨어 광고 캔페인의 촬영을 맡기도 하였으며 디올옴므의 캠페인 촬영에도
참여하였다. 그가 생로랑의 수장이 된 이후 생로랑의 광고 캠페인 촬영은 모두 에디슬리먼이
맡고있다. 그는 패션과 모델만 촬영하는것이 아니라 공연장에 가서 아티스트와 음악을 즐기는
젊은이들을 촬영하거나 그에게 영감을 주는 셀러브리티, 가수들을 특유의 느낌으로 촬영한다.

27. 디자이너 에디슬리먼을 조사한 뒤 느낀점
에디 슬리먼은 지금 패션계에서 가장 이슈가 되는 인물이다. 혹자는 이브 생 로랑의 브랜드를 망쳤다고 까지 말하는 호불호가
갈리는 디자이너이지만 패션에 관심이 있는 젊은이들이라면 모두 그를 찬양하기 마련이다. 이렇듯 디자이너 그 자체만으로도
이슈가 되는 것 또한 그의 능력인 듯 싶다. 그의 특유의 자유분방하고 반항적인 느낌은 억압된 젊은이들의 대리만족을 시켜주기
때문에 그를 그렇게 좋아하게 되는 것일까. 혹자는 이브 생 로랑의 뒤를 잇기에 부적합 하다고 하지만 내 생각에는 적절하다고
생각한다. 이브 생 로랑도 크리스챤 디올이 죽은 뒤 그의 뒤를 이어 하이 패션의 정점에 있는 브랜드인 디올의 수장이었다가
젊은이들의 반항적인 스트리트 무드를 컬렉션 무대에 올렸다는 이유로 혹평을 들었었다. 그 이후 이브 생 로랑도 자신의 브랜드를
런칭하여 젊은이들에게서 얻은 영감을 마음껏 펼쳤다. 이러한 사실을 볼 때 에디 슬리먼도 이브 생 로랑과 비슷한 성향을 갖고
있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 패션은 항상 변화하는 분야이다. 항상 더 젊고 아름다워 보이기 위해 끊임없이 변화한다. 이브 생
로랑처럼 역사가 깊은 브랜드도 패션의 정상에 있으니 만큰 항상 변화하는 것이 바람직하다고 생각한다. 나 또한 기존의 관습에
틀어박혀있는 디자인이 아니라 계속해서 혁신과 변화를 꾀하는 디자이너가 되어야겠다고 생각한다.
