Genghis Khan, the founder and Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, passed away in 1227. As the ruler of the largest contiguous empire in history, Genghis Khan's death marked the end of his reign over the vast territories conquered by the Mongols across Asia and Eastern Europe. His empire was subsequently divided among his sons and grandsons.
