1. 10 Rules for
Increasing
Utilization
1. Assess the readiness for change and the capacity of the employee group to adopt a corporate
wellness initiative.
a. Make sure you understand each organization’s unique corporate culture and the
impact that culture will have on success, before you start!
2. Identify your Wellness Champions who will “sell” the program for you and encourage adoption,
not adaptation – this has to start at the top but will not work unless you include those key
influencers within your organization, at every level.
3. Clearly articulate, document and communicate the need for the Wellness initiative – why do we
need this?
4. Clearly articulate, document and communicate the desired outcome of the Wellness initiative –
what are you trying to achieve?
5. Create and implement a Wellness Implementation Plan which includes a plan for building
knowledge, skills and the environment necessary for successful utilization of the program.
6. Provide your Wellness Champions with the tools they need to demonstrate strong and committed
leadership – not just at the CEO level – find the “Wellness” Champions or Ambassadors within
your employee group who can “walk the walk and talk the talk”.
7. Engage the employees on a personal and interactive level who will be affected by the Wellness
initiative – don’t implement TO them, implement WITH them.
8. Develop a communications plan with the right information to the right people at the right time
and in the right way.
9. Anticipate, understand and adapt to roadblocks along the way – adjust your implementation
plan and your communication plan – but never lose sight of your end goal.
10. Celebrate! Celebrate success throughout the process, not just at the end. Make sure everyone is
part of the celebration because everyone is responsible for the success of the initiative.
