IO-Link – What is it?
IO-Link is the first standardised IO technology worldwide (IEC 61131-9) for the communication with sensors and also actuators.
It is typically used in an automation environment below the I/O level for individual linking of field devices
It uses point-to-point communication based on the long established 3-wire sensor and actuator connection without additional requirements regarding cabling.
IO-Link is not a fieldbus, nor is it a replacement for AS-i. It is however evidence of the further development of the existing, tried-and-tested connection technology for sensors and actuators.
Since 2010, IO-Link has been incorporated within the PROFIBUS & PROFINET User Organisation (PNO)

This excellent session by Alexander Bolshev (@dark_k3y) was a very pleasant surprise, and it's a bit frustrating that it is one of the three lost S4x14 videos.
We were concerned that it would be a bit S4x13 / insecure by design / low hanging fruit, but HART has received so little attention that we thought it was worth including in S4x14. HART is widely used in DCS to connect controllers and instruments. The HART Foundation says over 30 million HART devices are deployed.
Alexander covers the protocol in the early slides, but make sure you look at slides 16-21 where he shows how he can change the RTU's Polling Unit ID (who the RTU expects to poll it) to create a man-in-the-middle attack.
There are a number of other HART protocol attacks described, but I was most interested in his HRT Shield board - a high-power low-noise HART modem Arduino shield for sniffing, injecHng, and jamming current loop. He brought over some boards that we are building up to have in our Rack when we go out on an assessment.
I should note, mainly to avoid an email from Jeff, that WirelessHART has integrated security such as source/data authentication and encryption. As we walk through plants and factories we are seeing a number of these WirelessHART devices. They are easy to spot because they can be deployed in the most physically convenient place without worrying about wiring.

Introduction to the new MediaTek LinkIt™ Development Platform for RTOSMediaTek Labs
The new MediaTek LinkIt™ Development Platform for RTOS is based on ARM Cortex-M4 MCU architecture and provides leading features for the creation of connected appliances, home and office automation devices, smart gadgets, and IoT bridges. Supporting a range of chipsets (initially the MediaTek MT7687F), LinkIt for RTOS offers the convenience of a single toolset and common API implemented over a popular RTOS. With this you can achieve economies across a full range of consumer and business IoT devices. The platform consists of a Software Development Kit (SDK), Hardware Development Kits (HDKs), including modules from supply chain partners, and related technical documentation. The first release of the platform supports the MediaTek MT7687F Wi-Fi SOC which has a 192 MHz MCU, 1×1 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi subsystem, integrated security engine (AES and 3DES/SHA), embedded SRAM/ROM and 2MB flash. The new platform uses FreeRTOS with open-source modules for TCP/IP, SSL/TLS, HTTP (client and server), SNTP, DHCP daemon, MQTT, XML and JSON. Development and debugging is supported by free command line tools, plus a KEIL plug-in.
The Renesas YROTATE-IT-RX23T is a complete reference platform based on the 32-bit RX23T MCU, designed to drive any 3-phase Permanent Magnet Motor, with three Power Stages available to drive up to 5KW. The kit can handle up to 48VDC motors, and up to 5Apeak, and is delivered with an intuitive PC GUI to manage the motor speed, display the vector control parameters and provide access to an exhaustive list of parameters: motor intrinsic parameters, PI coefficients, etc. By default, the sensorless Field Oriented Control algorithm uses three shunts for current detection and runs at 16KHz PWM. The PC GUI features auto-tuning and enables self-calibration of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors. The complete material of the kits can be downloaded free of charge from: http://www.renesas.eu/motorcontrol
The Display it! Solution Kit, based on the ARM Cortex A9 RZ/A microprocessor, provides all you need to evaluate leading embedded graphics brands in a single kit. From an easy-select PC GUI, get straight into pre-installed evaluation software for IS2T JVM, TES GUIliani, Segger emWIN, Altia Design and Express Logic GUIX.
The goal of any engineer designing a 3-phase inverter for an AC Brushless motor is to quickly get a running solution, tuned to his specific motor. An ideal design tool fulfilling this dream would enable automatic measurement of the motor parameters; ensure tuning of the system power stage; calibrate the coefficients of the Proportional/Integral current regulation block and guarantee a safe and reliable start-up process. Renesas are now offering such a dream tool as an enhancement to their existing RL78/G14, RX220, RX62T/RX63T Motor Control Reference platforms currently available. The enhancements to the Motor Control kits enable design engineers to plug-in and tune their own motor within a few minutes, allowing speedy and efficient system optimisation.
Renesas employ smart MCU power management techniques which include autonomous peripheral operation with DMA. The solution is to place the MCU in the lowest possible power mode whilst the peripherals are allowed to perform functions. In this presentation and tools demonstration, Renesas will show how to enable lowest system power using there RL78 MCU smart peripheral techniques. To extend the idea, individual peripherals could be given more functions and even reduce DMA operations. For example A/D converter with compare functionality so that the result register need not wake up the CPU if the result is within or outside the threshold limits. Similarly a serial interface could be checked for a valid and desired data and if that is not received then the CPU could be sleep mode. Renesas extends this idea of implementing the technique to other peripherals within the MCU to make them smarter.
Looking for a suitable 32-bit microcontroller? Need to consider some factors before choosing a suitable MCU? This presentation will walk you some of the factors to consider when selecting a 32-bit microcontroller product. This short presentation will cover aspects including performance, code size, product line up, reliability to name but a few. Get some more information here: www.renesas.eu/RX
