How To (Not) Open Source - Javazone, Oslo 2014gdusbabek
Releasing an open source project while maintaining a shipping product is hard! Different behaviors, attitudes and actions can help or hinder your cause; and they are not always obvious.
The Blueflood distributed metrics engine was released as open source software by Rackspace in August 2012. In the succeeding months the team had to strike a manageable balance between the challenges of growing a community, being good open source stewards, and maintaining a shipping product for Rackspace. Find out what worked, what did not work, and the lessons that can be applied as you endeavor to take your project out into the open.
In this presentation you will learn about strategies for releasing open source products, pitfalls to avoid, and the potential benefits of moving more of your development out in the open.
We have also made a few realizations about the community growing up around metrics. It is still young, and there are problems that come with that youth. I'll talk about some things we can do to make a better software ecosystem.
14 things you need to be a successful software developer (v3)Robert MacLean
As we passed 140 years of software development, you would think the path to success has been worked out, documented, taught, and largely understood and yet, most software is late, over budget, or full of bugs (sometimes all three). This talk is not about the new Wizz-bang tech that will change your life by solving the issues in software development and only cost you a monthly subscription to your favourite tech company, rather this talk is focused on the only thing that you have control to change, YOURSELF. Join Robert as he will share 14 rules for being successful in software development, a talk he wished he had gotten over 20 years ago.
Javantura v7 - Learning to Scale Yourself: The Journey from Coder to Leader - Daniel Strmečki
Your success depends on others, a 1-man army can only achieve so much. The only way to progress from coder to leader is to learn how to scale yourself. Nowadays, you can become a Senior Developer with just a few years of experience. After that, there are many roads and possibilities you can take. Whether you decide for a developer, architect, manager or a mixed career, at one point, you will need to become a leader. In the first chapter of the lecture we will start a discussion on how to get there. Since your time is limited, you need to mentor, coach, motivate and engage others. Start with making a stable foundation, like setting up a proper onboarding process. If you help people around you, they will for sure talk about it, and your manager will hear it. Also, demonstrate ability in everyday work: coding, project management, client-focus, communication and care about others. Always stick to your values and keep high standards. In the second chapter we will discuss the challenges that turn up once you get there. At that point you will deal with people more than technology. You will need to step away from coding for meetings very often. Interruptions will happen every day and it we be very hard to maintain “the flow”. You will need to learn how to delegate and drive topics without implementing them yourself. Visit the lecture to find out some techniques for dealing with interruptions, meetings, prioritization, people and their motivation.
Presentation I did for the Orlando iOS Developer Meetup. It was originally intended to help those who were looking to build their first iOS applications, but turned into a presentation about good project management skills and how to manage your freelancing work.
Top 10 Things To Do If You Want To Get Fired Over A WordPress ProjectWilliam Bergmann
A rundown of 10 of the most common ways to wreck a WordPress project, along with tips to avoid them for Project Managers on both the Client and Agency side.
Good programmers write code that humans can understand- well, that is called clean code. This is code that other developers can easily read, understand, and add to.
Developers often rush to code when they feel the pressure from the client or manager or deadline, sometimes sacrificing the quality. Every year, a tremendous amount of time and significant resources are lost only because of poorly written code.
This slide focuses on the types of programming, definitions of clean code, characteristics of clean code, examples and how to write those.

Abstract: Open source programming is professionally and personally rewarding, but many people are intimidated by the barriers to entry and the field's reputation for hostility to newcomers, especially members of marginalized groups. As a computer science professor at a minority-serving women's college, I have countered this by guiding students, as part of their required coursework, to learn and apply the necessary skills to make contributions to open source projects. I will share what I have learned over the years about breaking down the barriers to help other educators, mentors, and open source practitioners increase participation.
